Year, Model & Trim Level
96 xlt
i am trying to design a stealth sub setup for my x - 96 xlt awd 4 dr no jbl. it has no sub, just a map pocket on rear pass. panel. i don't want to install ready-made enclosures from mxt or qlogic.

i am sure some of you already done that, so i have questions.
1. how to remove the map pocket panel without removing the whole rear panel?
2. what is the max mounting depth there?
3. what is approx. volume of the space behind the panel?

what i am planning to do is to cut mdf panel to mount behind the plastic of the trim, attach it to the sheetmetal with silicone and hard foam. anybody done anything like that?

I'm going to do the same thing soon.

1. I don't thing you can remove the pocket without removing the whole panel.
2. 6"
3. I don't know that one.

what sub are you planning to use? looks like 10" may fit in there, depth permitting...

I've got a 10" Hertz sub mounted in one of those pre-made boxes. Hertz is an Italian company that makes high-end components and hardly run of the mill. I couldn't even find them on Google. I searched high and low for a high end driver which had a reasonable mounting depth. Hertz fit the bill. Superb sounding sub and well worth the money. I found mine at a local shop which specializes in high-end car audio.

You definitely want to remove the panel to do the job right.

unless you want to destroy the pocket you cant get it out without pulling the whole panel off (well, most of the way off). I didn't secure my box, its just the right size though that it is held into place by the side wall when I put the thing back together...

The rear panel is pretty easy to remove.
I would suggest going to junk yards and looking for a stock sub box, and also see if you can't get the stock subwoofwr grille. I modified mine to accept a polk momo 10" and put the panel back on
I know I'm not comp level, but what you see is nothing. The box itself can look like **** as long as it is sealed

i built a box out of 3/4" mdf to fit back there...making one out of big mdf like that sucks cause youre already limited on your space but imo its the only way to do it. the box is (estimated) just under a cubic foot and weighs probably 35 pounds without the sub. pretty much its rediculous. but yea, you can get great sound and bass by doing this. i covered mine up with a stock grill to make it all look stock.

I am also doing this as well is the box hard to make and how long does it take...Does anyone have any pictures?

that's great! can you share dimentions of the box? for 10" sub even 1/2" mdf will work, i think.

dang guys i wish i still had the pics. let me see what i can dig up. i couldnt find the thread but i might have them somewhere...

sorry guys, i looked high and low and no pics were found :( sorry...i did this about 3 years ago. V8 boat builder did one not all that long ago (at least i dont feel like it was that long ago, but it probably was 2 years ago) and i like his better than mine. the design of it that is. they both work well and im happy with mines performance but his design is nicer. see if you can find any of his pics, or maybe he'll chime in here

Don't worry about it, your goal is 1 hidden sub and of course you're giving up something over 2, But if you only have 2 but the next guy has 4, who's giving up power then?
keep it stealthy. It won't win a db award, but trust me, more often than not, people will tell you to turn it down even with 1 sub, that is if you are cool enough to have someone with you.
