What causes a buzzing sound when I depress the left turn lever on my '97 Explorer XL? Am I going to be looking at a fire or anything?

Also, still waiting to hear if anyone knows why the fan on my XL sounds like it is blowing into a hollow space. Is it the old "blend door" problem, do you think?

Does heat come out?
How about A/C?

Your multi function switch at the base of your turn signal stalk may be dirty and need to be cleaned or replaced.

Fire? I am not sure. Smoke is a definate possability. :)

Welcome to the site! Did we miss your first post? I assume we did.....

I was able to fix my turn signal buzz by taking it apart and cleaning the contacts. There was all sorts of debris and **** in there.

yes, I posted mid-February.

I get heat, I get some a/c (though not very good....winter temps and having the air on didn't make us feel "cool"

It just sounds like the fan is blowing into a barrel or something....very hollow sounding and a lot of noise for the output we get

well, judging by the amount of dirt in this vehicle (we bought late fall for winter driving), I would think that it is a definite possibility that there's a lot of stuff.....

I'll try cleaning the contacts....hopefully this is not too tough to do.....I love trying stuff, just don't want to screw up Thanks!

Now if anyone has any ideas about that darn fan......:)

I had the buzzing noise from the turn signal; I fixed it by replacing the turn signal stalk (aka the Multi Function Switch) It was only $45 US from fordpartsnetwork.com

The blend door is the most likely culprit. My fan will get a roar to it when things get out of sink. I have found that playing with the controls like when it is on max A/C and I try to adjust the temperature above 75 will get me more heat than I can stand until I turn the fan speed down so try playing with some of the settings. Also if it just totally locks up try going to the off mode before proceeding further.

My 96 Explorer makes the same noise behind the turn signal switch. How much trouble is it to take apart and clean? Are there any pictures of this process?

i have a 97 mercury mountaineer when i go to use left turn signal all it does is buzz. it wont work i checked my fuse its fine my light are fine. At first all i had to do was adjust my steering wheel to up and then it would work now when i do that it just makes that buzzing sound. I was told that there is some thing in my steering colum that needs to be fixed. I dont know what it is or any thing like that. does any one have any advice?

Your turn signal switch (aka Multifunction switch) needs to be replaced. It comes as an entire unit, lever and all. It costs about $45 for a new one. (part only)

Or you can take it apart and clean it for free, take the $45 and buy 3 cases of Natty Light 30 packs.

I'm all for cases of beer, but if I'm going to take the thing apart, I'd just as soon replace it and be done with it for a few years. ;) JMO.

whatever tickles your pickle.

My 96 had that same turn signal problem, replaced the whole unit. easy to do just pull of the plastic on the column and two screws, and out it comes
