strange problem, need help

because I'm in CA.... temporarily, but I must abide by the laws of the land, no matter how idiotic and backwards.

pcm

I have been given a pcm, unfortunately it is for a 99' explorer sport 2wd, which I cannot use and do not need.:( I also can't sell it here on the forum because I need an elite member ship;), the money I make just from being an elite member isn't worth what I would make from the sale. Bummer:(. I found a local muffler shop, illegitimately that will install a whole exhaust including cats and weld new 02' bungs "more easily accessible ones at that:p:" for about 350 bones. I asked for the flowmaster special, which is a cheap flowmaster knockoff, and since rust isn't an issue here, I think it will work out great. Spose to take her down there on fri afternoon. Wish me luck.

Check your SPARK PLUG WIRES! Mine was running really rough, especially during high RPMs, I checked everything, still couldn't find the problem, and then finally changed the wires and voila! It ran perfectly!

Also since you have cleaned the MAF, AIT, TPS, IAC, you may have to replace them... I had some issues where the MAF and the AIT were bad, even after cleaning them... made the same symptoms you have described!

great, sort of

very comforting to know, thanks for the tip.

luxury cat?

700 bucks for new magnaflow cats FML! more than I paid for the whole damned car. California has created a monopoly, therefore cornering the market with their stupid regulations once again. I swear, when the big one comes and Commuforia breaks off and sinks into the ocean, I am gonna build a bonfire and dance around it like rumple friggin stitskin.

Way, way back you commented that you heard a "hissing from the dash". Could that be a vacuum leak on your climate control system? My F150 had a leak on the hose controlling the blend door and I chased all kinds of things like plugs and wires and gaskets until I heard the hissing from behind the radio.

good call

I was planning to find out why my air door wasn't working, I have the thread saved, and will pull my radio to see if it is an easy fix. I will get the sploder back from the muffler shop tomorrow at lunch. I'll def check that out. Found out some good news though, I figured out where the other cat went...... ready for this? inside of the muffler. completely cloggd on one side, which would explain some of my driveability problems. found out when the shop replaced the cats and by two minutes of running they glowed red. so now I have some magnaflow cats and a flowmaster dual in single out dump by the pass door.

nice huh?

Ok, so flowmaster sounds friggin sweet, however, the car runs worse than ever, and drives even worse, now that it has cats and a better flowing exhaust. pass cat glows red within minutes. I will see about the vacuum leak under the dash, but I need to figure out why one side is getting hot, but not the other. How to check injectors? also I need some bigger injectors for a project. I actually want to run less fuel, the larger injectors have higher impedances so with the stock computer/tune they will flow less fuel. I want to prevent from throwing a code because my injectors cannot pulse low enough. That is for later, now I have to get this thing runnin right.

please help

Ok, so I got some lean computer codes, cleared them pulled the pass o2's and cleaned then with sensor cleaner. I started it and it still runs like poo. But sometimes it doesn't. while idling, or sometimes when driving, the cats get hot enough to glow. I don't want to keep driving it, I just pumped 1000 dollars into it for cats. I know it is running rich at least on the drivers side, because that cat is glowing. That is unless I got the o2's reversed. will run like crap, but runs better than ever, then all of a sudden will run great with no studdering or missing. It misses, however, not because of a bad coil, plugs, or wires, it misse sbecause there is too much fuel in the cyl. that is what is causing the cat to glow, but it isn't enough to cause the code to drop. So no codes, but crappy running condition. I am baffled. please help

It is the back portion of the drivers side cat. Only after the middle of the cat, right at the bend.

drove it about a half a mile to the gas station, glowed. Drove it back didn't glow???? WTF? still drives like poo.

intermittently drives well

Ok, I have gone through so much with this car I am going crazy. I have already thrown over 1400 dollars into it and still something is wrong. I am bonkers, I just need an answer. The most recent change is new cats. I drive, and it misses, and has no throttle response under load, and even almost dies. I can floor it and get absolutely nothing. When in park it sounds great, and it doesn't appear that getting to temperature changes this variable. There are no codes, and no pending codes. There is no reason that it shouldn't run great. Then, the best part, for no particular reason whatsoever, while driving, it drives great and gies me all the throttle I want for an indeterminable amount of time. The car will not hold speed, at all, ever, for no matter what I do I cannot figure it out. I have new plugs and wires, new 4 o2's, new intake gaskets, cleaned all of my sensors, maf, ait, throttle position, iac. I have a fresh oil change, new air filter, new fuel filter, and new fuel pump. I also now have new cats, and I don't want to ruin them. I am at a loss. I think it is an injector, because only the drivers side cat glows, and only intermittently. How can I tell? I also think that there is a vacuum leak. I also think that there is an exhaust leak at the manifold "it is missing two studs" but it doesn't sound like it. I am not driving it or putting any more money in till I know what it is.

thanks for any and all help,

Kevin

Ok first, no need to start a new thread. It is best to work with this one so everyone will be on the same page. This way we can see what has been done.

Speaking of, I went back to your first post where you say you "cleaned the TPS"
You cannot clean a TPS, and if you did try to and actually get fluid into it, I bet you knocked it out.

Try a new one.

I also merged the 2 threads

cool, works for me

I cleaned the tps, with MAF cleaner, and made sure it ws completely dry before reassembly. The trottle works, in park I can revv all day, but under load, it is a different story, so I don't hink that it is the TPS. Computer doesn't tell me anything, I know it is getting too much fuel, I just don't know how, or why.

Because the tps is shorted to ground, or flaking out, giving a high signal telling the PCM you have it floored.

Maybe? what is the TPS voltage please at idle position, mid throttle and WOT?

I'll find out. need to go to the shop for my multimeter.

what is wrong?

I can now tell you with certainty that all of my fuel injectors are bad. the ones on the pass side do not pulse enough, and the ones on the drivers side stay open, ohm readings are all above 15. TPS is in spec and working properly. I did notice, however, that the car runs great whenever I shut down restart, allow me to explain. I start the sploder, she runs great, shifts fine, good power throttle response etc. For no reason and after an indeterminable amount of time it will simply run like poo. I am oving at this point, so I shift to neutral, shut off the motor and start it again, start back at page one. I have six new injectors from an 06' I ...... acquired, let's say, same 4.0 SOHC. I will post when I replace them with new o-rings. The SOLIS had a lot to say, to including telling me about my GEM being all messed up. I also did not have any codes, pending or otherwise. Better news, The cat doesn't glow as long as I don't drive ungodly slow, or let the engine idle. I can literally FEEL the air fuel mixture messed up in the throttle, and shifting of the vehicle, I can drive all day in a low gear and as long as she's revved and the throttle is open which is consistent with a stuck open injector. I got three that do nothing, stuck closed, MOST of the time, and three who have -10, and -15 all of the time "stuck open" This also explains earlier problems with soot inside the passenger side exhaust and the drivers side was clean. And also why I am throwing lean codes on the pass side o2's and rich codes on the drivers side o2's.

1998 is return fuel system, 06 is returnless system, so those injectors may not actually "plug in" to the harness. They will "look " plugged in, but the connections will not be there.
