No one has installed a BW 4406 into a pre-2006 Sport yet, so it should be tight.
If the 2001 tank is different, look at the front surface, the front face which will be the interference surface with the BW 4406. Compare the distance of each of those, back to the mounting strap. The mounting strap location is the same for each tank, for all 91+ Explorers, 2dr or 4wd(those body styles).
The best way to compare whether it will fit is to find out the clearance of an existing 4dr BW 4406 truck, and subtract the wheel base. The only differences will be the gas tank front surface shape of different year tanks, and manufacturing variances.

dono, nope. the drive shafts wont be a bolt on. those will have to be made. fort gary industries on inkster and route 90 can do them. they have done a few in the past for me. if they have dont have to cut them, i think the last one was about $100 cut, welded and balanced with new u joints.
don looking at any 4 door bw 4406 threads everyone had to bend the front flange down iir. to me, i would have to think two door and 4 door trucks are i identical until you get mid way past the rear floor pan. thats me though. if i am not wrong i would think they would make the changes towards the back of the tank, but time is going to tell.

What I was saying is to find out the 4dr clearance, and subtract the wheel base change. You can figure in the gas tank length change also, and with those three figures, you know the clearance.

I can give you a little advice on the t-case mounting point on the v-8 vs the v-6 from what I have measured with the trac your mounting points move about one inch forward. so you gain about an inch clearance at the gas tank with the 5.0 That is also why the awd drive shaft is shorter then the 4.0 4x4 front drive shaft.

Hows the install going, anyway?
Thanks for the tip on Fort Garry industries. I knew they did lot of fabrication there, but thought it was more fire truck stuff.

theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeear!
was i happy to see them? you be the judge.....
almost didnt get them either. fed ex wanted a signature for them. well, i wasnt home. my father had came to my house for something, and told me they hadnt come yet, and was going to wait until they showed up. well, fed ex phoned me and said some time between 12-5 pm (yea that narrows it down some) called my dad back, and told him not to bother. 30 mins after he left, fed ex showed up, and left again. called my dad back cause he was going to come back later and wait for them and told him the guy came and left. now, i have no idea how he did this (take in factor he is 69 years old) but he found the fed ex guy someplace in town, and grabbed them off the truck for me! i have one hell of a awesome father!!!!
so luck now has it, i cant get into budy's garage today, and tomorrow i am meeting with my sisters for supper. which means looks like i start on this wed.......its going to be a long two days......

well after what felt once again like forever, evil FINALLY got into my friends garage!!!!!
looks like these keys will no longer be useful
call me sentimental and all, but this is in a way a bitter sweet thing for me to do, now that i have started taring it apart. i think, this is the drive train evil was born with, served me well since i bought her, has made it twice now to AFN and back, and has took any punishment me, or anyone i have trust to drive her without blinking (and if some of you saw how i drive evil, you would punch me).
but with that said, i now get to have lots o fun! hea, hea!
and if she falls off the hoist (yea, i dont have to lay flat on my back
) we can all blame this guy!
climbed up to the loft for these two pics.
i took a few pics just to see how close it will be for the 4406. cant remember if i had posted that the one i got for free is shot, so it will now be used for mock up, and see if it will fit or not. it will be very close!
side note, for those of you that want to see how close the roll pan is to the frame.

i have a pile of pics i took, i will post them later as a before and after type thing when the motor is in. i did get as far as getting the transfer case out, just letting some fluid drain before i pull it out.
and now out.

looks way more roomy without it, thats for sure!
after starting to get the trans ready, i spotted this......
WTF! somebody's ass better have been fired!
got as far as putting the jack under the trans, but i couldnt find the brackets to keep it from falling, so this is how it sits for now.
its held in by two bolts. buddy took off for the evening, and i couldnt get a hold of him otherwise it would have been out.
so moving right along, i decided to get some other stuff out of the way
yup, thats the front diff sitting there. i remember when we took the donor apart, we had to cut some of the frame (that or drop the diff out, and i didnt want to put it back in so it could be rolled around) to undo the motor mounts. the pumpkin was covering the nut, so i pulled the diff. it will also give me a chance to change the pass diff seal that leaks on me every year because i cant get in there good enough to properly install it.
this is where the diff was. right below the drivers motor mount nut.

and the passengers side
its also easy to say she was starting to leak oil pretty good as well. cant tell for sure just yet, but the pan and frame are covered.
the pile of parts that will either be used for any future truck i buy, fix and resell, or keep for what ever reasons....and it will grow by the end of the week i am sure.

so thats it for today. tomorow it will take all of 5 mins, then the trans will be out. i should also have the motor out as well, and start putting in some of the 5L parts.
now, i pump my self full of pain killers, as i have had some real bad back problems for the last two months, and i know this isnt helping any
.
