I'm looking for a set of valve covers to clear my roller rockers. The shop put on a basic chrome set, but the oil fill is in the back. Can anybody recommend a decent set that keeps the fill in the stock location and clears the rockers? I've got an intake spacer, so there's enough room to go up without a problem.

I read this thread:
But I'm not clear on exactly how the OP modified the truck covers to fit.

These might work?

I'd love to be able to just order something that fits out of the box, but that might be a pipe dream.

I'm also interested in the possibilities, I will need a few myself.

There are many choices, but finding them which have the filler on the front end you need is kind of rare. I found a pair of polished VC's but the fill neck is a normal height(too short to be as good as the stock one). So you won't find any that let you have the OEM filler top, but maybe you can attach the stock fill neck to some VC. I have two sets from a Ford crate engine Boss 347 but those also have the breather holes in the wrong places. Being aluminum they may be decent to modify.

I'd say spend a lot of time searching for EFI 302 valve covers, that's the best way to find them.

I'm still digging around. The Spectre's I linked above do look promising, but I'd rather have something a little more confidence inspiring than a decorative chrome cover.

Also, try for thicker aluminum covers, they help slightly to mask the loud roller rockers.

I also will have to deal with the roller rockers for my 302 based engines. For my old Cleveland, I'm considering leaving the stock system in place. Stock rockers are quiet, and way cheaper overall, and they do fine to as much as 7000rpm. To convert my old 4V heads will cost near $1000, for machining, roller rockers, and the studs and guide plates.

The first aftermarket set I bought looked just like that, but are taller. I had them powder coated to protect the surface, clear wasn't a good choice so I tried a translucent black. They didn't turn out that good, but are not very visible in an Explorer, so I was good with them. I gave $150 for them and I don't recall how much to ship them to Turdle and back etc. I got them from eBay I think, but there were others similar there, and online elsewhere.

Have you looked at stock Al 5.0 Mustang covers? (87ish-92)
Not much modification for them to fit (remove the baffle).

What is AI?

Those 87-93 VC's are good and on eBay for about $50 or so, I also have read that they can clear most roller rockers. I saw many spacers but the only short ones were $135 and more, for 3/8" or 1/2" spacers.

Oh - thanks! I misread that as a capital I. So they're tall enough that a simple baffle bump might enough. Good to know!

Edit - you're suggesting this type?

Yes, those are well liked and common. You might even be able to fit that stock filler neck rubber hose onto that Mustang neck.

Hunt the good VC gaskets too, the real steel ones. Those HO Mustangs came stock with those steel gaskets, they are not cheap, but they can last forever. I've even read of people stacking two of those together to gain height. I think I would add some RTV between them if I tried that. I bet that would gain an 1/8" at least. Those used to cost about $20-25 each, I bet they're more now.

Much appreciated. I'll stick a bid in on a set and see what happens in the next couple of days.

I actually had a good set of the steel/rubber gaskets, though they didn't survive the last couple of years while the engine was in pieces in the garage. Definitely worth the investment IMO.

Yeah I grabbed a set of those mustang covers when I was planning to try rockers. I still plan to put them on after a coat or two of black wrinkle paint.

I still have a used gasket set from my first 91 LSC that I got the heads/intake/VC's and gaskets from a friend. They looked great when I took them off, so after 25 years or so, the rubber is hard enough that it'll need some RTV to seal good. I sold the engine from that later so the gaskets are all I had left.

Ordered a set of the stock Mustang covers on eBay. Will update the thread once they're in hand. Thanks for the advice!

was going to say trickflows. they come with no holes so you can punch them out where ever you want.

Good to know. Do they include the grommet or whatever is needed to put the oil fill in place after cutting the hole?

Fair enough. I'll definitely keep it as a fall back option if the Mustang covers won't clear. Thanks again.
