I wanted to find out how much load weight my new trailer was going to have on it, so I loaded up my explorer with the normal trail stuff I carry and went up to a public scale.

5380 lbs!!!!!!!!

My custom bumpers weigh almost 300lbs together, so that's part of it.
The steel wheels and the full sized spare are also quite heavy, But when I climb into the X, the weight will be even higher! :)

Has anyone else out there weighed their explorer?

Just curious! What did it weigh????

Jim

when my truck looked like this, no hood, no fender, no bumper, no grill, no real lights, no swaybars, 31s and no cargo it weighed 4125 pounds!

With my 31s, factory rims, fully loaded, mine was 4500+.

Thanks for the replies!

Now I don't feel so bad about it weighing what it does! :)

My Ranger, when loaded with everything I carry when wheeling, including me, weighs 4220.

Last time I weighed mine it was 5500. Since then I've added a rollcage, added to the front bumper, doubled the width of the nerf bars and the atlas II weighs about double what a stock t-case weighs.

So we're pushing 6000lbs:eek:

4750 on the local dump's scales

weighed mine twice. first time was 4320 with 3/4 tank of gas (no driver), and second time was 4200-something with no driver. i did it on different scales, to double-check the accuracy.

i know how the big tires/wheels/bumpers etc. adds alot to weight... but some of you guys have my weight PLUS 1000lbs... how is that possible? the transfer is all chains and aluminum, so it cant be THAT heavy.

for the record- my 75 Bronco, with 35's, bumpers, cage, gear driven iron transfer case, etc. weighed 3930 with no top. since that time i have used the sawzall on alot of different parts, so im proly 3800-something now. ;)

With 1/2 tank of gas in the rear and me not in it. Just had it weighed for new springs.

Front driver side- 1,297
Front Pass. side- 1,277
Total front-2574

Rear driver side- 1,237
Rear Pass. side- 1,249
Total Rear-2486

Total rig-5,060

It's pretty well balanced.

It sure doesn't help having those 20+lbs "balancing" weights on the back on the transfer case and the rear differential. I have been thinking of ways to decrease the weight, but unfortunately, theres not much one can do. Where is the bulk of the weight anyway, engine, tranny, axles? Why are the Explorers so heavy compared to comparatively sized vehicles?

Cherokee's don't have a frame. They are uni-body which is a lighter design.

I'lll keep my frame:D

Where do you weigh your rigs?? Is it one of those DMV controlled weigh stations?

Truckstops

wow I didn't realize these trucks weigh that much. I was under the impression my truck weighed around 3800-3900#'s. I guess its more like 4000-4200. I've never had it actually weighed but would anyone like to give me an estimate for a 2WD 4.0L OHV XLT like mine? Thanks.

Probably about 4200.

if you open the drivers door there should be a sticker that tells you the weight. I think mine was 5320. 4door 4x4.

No, the weight on the Vehicle Certification Number is the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). This is not the same as curb-weight (actual weight of vehicle). The GVWR is the absolute maximum safe weight of your vehicle with a full load of cargo which on the Explorer is about 900-1000 lbs. more than the curb weight.

My GVWR is 4700 lbs (2 dr, 2WD). If I subtract 1000 lbs, that gives me a curb weight of 3700 lbs. That's close to what Edmunds says my model weighs.
