Guys: I have a line on a rear disc set up from an '02 Sport 4x4, and am wondering if that is too new for my '93 Explorer 4x4 with ABS. The '02 has 22K on it. so the yard says. The research I did said the calipers were for '02-'03, but the plates, rotors look like a good match. Also the master cylinder looks like a bolt on, but are the brake line sizes going to match in diameter, and/ or how can I check this? Thanks for any help you can throw my way !

the rear end is still a 31 spline 8.8 so it should be a bolt on deal as long as you have everything you need.
The best master cylinder to use is a 95 Explorer master, no cruise control.
Check out the original rear disc brake conversion thread writeen by Brett many many years ago on this forum.

I would not use a "used" master cylinder and the 02 version has the built in sensor that is not needed for your 93, for best results go buy a brand new 95 Explorer master cylinder with no frills.

Thanks , you guys are the best !

410 Fortune and Froader: You guys are great ! Thanks for all you do here! I read all the threads I could find on this, Brett's yours and everybody else, before even searching for parts. Thanks for the tip on the master. I'll buy a new one ! I've no hesitaiton to get the right stuff, just wasn't sure about the '02 master. cause I have cruise control, but never use it.
Take care,
shamal

I always recommend the 95 master cyl because thats what I needed for my 88 when I installed a dana 35 up front and disc brake 8.8 in the back, BUT over the years I have had many people tell me that the 94 master cylinder is the same part number from Ford. I have never confirmed this but it is possible that you dont even need a new master cylinder of your 94 is equipped with 4wabs. Before you go buy anything try matching up some part numbers with Ford and do a little mose searching around. Of course if you are like me and have alot of miles on your truck a new master cylinder may not hurt anything, I know my 88 master cylinder and the brake booster had at least 150K miles on them when I pulled them in favor of a newer booster and a new 95 master, the difference in braking was night and day, I also removed my RWABS 100% at the same time.

410, how did you bypass the ABS in the rear?

I have a '91 EddieB

If I can get a hold of a newer rear axle I would like to do the conversion.
The mechanics of it are simple. I read about the E'brake stuff, I'll work that out after getting the parts

But I would like to get around the ABS. Will the dash light indicator come on the Dash?

I would think the ABS would be uneffected. The sensor is in the center of the diff. The ABS should still work. Where it may change is at the master cyl. I'm not sure how the old ones work. but in theroy it will work or you'll get a ABS light, and the brakes will work as if there is no abs.

ABS Workaround

Tony H: I'm in a simliar boat as you. I have 4WABS, and was wondering how an updated Master Cyl would meter the fluid distribution, ie would I need a specific year to get that right, a proportioning valve, or what ?? I would love to dump my ABS, up here in Canada it's a bit of a liability in the snow. The physical removal seems straight forward, but I too wonder about the computer part ?? As it stands right now, I thought I'd install the setup, with the original master, whic works well with a new kit in it, and see what happens. Then I'll go from there. If you have or get any info, I'd like to here from you. I plan to photo and submit this job, in case it's useful to the site admin.
regards,
Shamal

My 88 BII had RABS only and I was never happy with it. The frame mounted RABS valve was removed and a simple pipe fitting went between the two hard lines (line going into valve, line going out)
I also removed the wiring and computer from my truck.

I used my RABS light in the dash as my new Overdrive off light hahaha
removing 4wabs is quite a bit more involved, but the same principal applies.
You can either take the fuse out anddisable the ABS braking or you can completely remove the valve, lines, computer, wiring, etc.

Master Cyl years

Guys: FYI: The master cylinder, according to my sources, fits a 1991 to 1997 Explorer, and some earlier Broncos and Rangers. I think I answered my own question !!?
Thanks !

most ford master cylinders are interchangeable as far as mounting to the booster, you are not talking as far as part numbers are you because there are options for them.....

I believe the master cyl for a non abs truck is the same as the master for a ABS truck, but there are options such as the cruise control switch
