I have a 97 AWD explorer that needs a transfer case..... will the 4wd transfer case off a 97 explorer work??

No. It's a completely different case with a completely different function, they will not bolt-up in place of each other, and there's no need for a hole in the floor even if it *could* swap in because you can't use a manual lever to shift a 44-05.

But if you have the 5.0 you can put a 4406 out of an F-150 in it. Search for it quite a few on here have done it. BTW you can do both electric and manual versions.

Yes, but the original question was whether or not a case from a 97 Explorer 4x4 would fit or not. I guess I jumbled the two responses... my bad.

Wait.... someone explain to me.... there were two flavors of the 4405 in 97 as I understand it.... the control trac 4WD version and the AWD version. TOTALLY interchangeable mechanically... maybe not electronically.

Am I missing something in this response ? *I* think the basic answer is YES!

I know I just love chiming in with the 4406 swap option! :D I love it lol.

I believe (read not sure but...) the 4405 is the control trac bolts behind the 4.0, the 4404 is the AWD bolts behind the 5.0 at least that's the way it is in the '96s. Since I'm not familiar with the tranny options behind the 4.0 I refer to the engine. They have completely different bolt patterns, and input shafts. Advanced adapters makes an adapter to put the "6 bolt 31 spline" tail shaft on the tranny behind the 4.0, but it's expensive and adds some length to the tranny. Not to mention I don't think anyone has figured out bolt in drive shafts, so you'll have to have custom ones cut. If I'm wrong someone please chime in here.

Do you have a V6 or V8? This is critical to answering your question.

Many people refer to Control-Trac as all wheel drive which it is not. With Control-Trac you still have a selectable t-case. With AWD you do not.

an answer is not possible without knowing what engine you have as Dan pointed out

Another way to tell is whether or not the vehicle has the "AUTO - 4HI - 4LO" rotary switch near the upper-left corner of the radio head unit.
