I was playing around in an area that had been underwater for a few months. Needless to say it was very slick and deceptively muddy.. I slid into a 2' mud hole and had to be winched out..

Thats is a truly horrifying display of winch safety.

Guy in the middle would of been seriously hurt if the cable went.

Agreed... perfect illustration of what NOT to do when winching...

Gotta love hydraulics though. :)

Sorry to disappoint you on the safety, but the situation/pull was relatively easy with the winch barely breaking a sweat. The winch cable was spooled out about 90ft with sand weights on both lines, unfortunately the person on the camera didn't get any of this in his shot (kind of hard to drive and operate the camera @ the same time). The angle of the pull is also very hard to see in the video, but was such that the cable was 7'+ to the side of the person in the middle. As you can see in the video the pull was extremely easy and only needed because of the complete lack of traction in the slick mud. Obviously when really stuck in deep mud that really strains the winch we have everyone far away from both vehicles and open the hoods for an extra measure of safety. Again it all depends on the situation and this situations was mild.

Everyone screams safety. Yeah that guy could have been somewhere else but he was not.

Glad to hear you were using sand weights. I need to get a set. I do pop the hood....

Looks like a easy and fast recov.

Sand bags or not, it was still a stupid risk to take.

And was the cable 7' away from him when he grabbed it with his hand?

Lets see... the load on the winch probably never exceeded 10% of it's rated capacity. As mentioned earlier this was one of the EASIEST PULLS we have ever done. When the pull started Mike (the guy running the cable) was off to the side. The winch pulled with a slight tug which enabled my tires to regain traction (at which point the cable went slack with Zero load on it). Throughout the pull the load on the winch ranged from None (when my tires gained traction) to 10% (when my tires lost traction).

When Mike grabbed the cable with his hand he was going to disconnect it. I'm not sure how else you would remove the cable.

it doesn't matter how easy the pull is, there's still a ton of tension on that cable. seriously, your buddy's a tard.

I would beg to differ with your statement.. The ease of pull is directly related to the amount of tension on the cable.

The real problem with the video is that you weren't there to see it first hand. If you were you would have seen the winch was barely working and the load on the cable was Minimal. We have made several really Hard Smoking pulls that were scary and made you think the cable was about to snap.. In those pulls everyone was well out of the way with hoods raised on both vehicles. The pull in the video was the complete opposite of that.

ok, here's my point: when the winch is acting in a way so that it is pulling another vehicle in any form, whether a light pull or a hard one, there is a significant amount of pressure on the line. you never know when a cable or d ring or hook is going to come loose, especially if it's cheaply made. it's really simple. just get the *** out of the way.

Your point is taken, but you sir are wrong... A light pull exerts a light force, a heavy pull exerts a heavy force.. plain and simple. You are assuming pressure that just wasn't there. Your analogy is equal to saying that if your blowing off a 1/4 stick of dynamite or a firecracker you need to be equally away

I don't yet have a winch but it is things like this that scare me some about getting one.. i think the best alternative for these things is well obviously safety and all but getting synthetic rope.. i think thats what ill do.
Nice video John! Personally i would say light or hard pull i'd try and stay away from it... you know just in case... no need for calling anyone names or throwing out obscenities to try and prove a point though dude(j602)! really it just makes you sound desperate and slightly wounded by the whole situation because no one is agreeing with you! just my opinion.. take care all!

DeRocha, i see what you're trying to say but i don't think that's an accurate comparison. it's cool though. i'm just trying to look our for your buddy's face.

Come on John...you know this is how you're supposed to winch ****.

You know what I always worry about with tensions? I always worry my snap strap will let off of what I am pulling and take out my back window.

in defense of that situation it was not the easiest recovery, wich is why we eventually went over the other way with morgan. we did do everything we could to try and go about it the best we could though.

either way we all do stupid **** in life, and in both situations everyone was ok, so how bout we all play nice, or else no body gets any cookies tonight, k?

eitherway glad to see the recovery went smothely DeRocha
