01 sport - 4.0 SOHC STS turbo charged (Project complete)

Oh, and I just finished the body mounts. I used the prothane kit for a 98 explorer. They fit good. I'm now installing dynomat and new carpet. I'll get's some pics.

I think those wheels look good. What body mounts did you change Jake, the main ten mounts? I'd like to do that if it would lower the truck at all. Are the top mounts thinner than the stock rubber?

I wouldn't think the rear brakes would be to hard to setup since we share the same rear axle. But without the very custom front brakes to match it's kind of pointless for most of us.

The Rangers are light weights, they swap the cheap Cobra brake parts on both ends and they can lock up the tires easily. I was hoping to see more details of the rear Cobra brake swap parts that they used.

Having trouble inserting pics. Not sure what's going on.

The rear suspension may need some tightening. Any side to side play will make rubbing tires happen more easily. I'd replace the fifth shock for sure, it helps a lot with that. Keep the rear suspension bushings good, and stiff. You might even swap in a V8 rearend, they have extra suspension bars, or did you do that already?

The parking brake cable will be in the way, it has to be tied well inboard from the stock flailing in the wind spot. The V8's have that extra bar that lets you run the cable inboard of it.

His bigger concern will be rubbing in the front, my 275's just clear the upper control arm by a hair, and the last set or tires the old control arms had to be ground down a bit to get them to clear.

Yes tire choice will be very important. With an 18 you can't use the really tall aspect ratios, he likely will be looking at 50 series 18's. The 275 isn't a must have, it may fit better in the rear. With 2WD he can select a shorter tire for the front, and less than the 275mm possibly.

Well, I've removed 120 pounds of seats and around 40 pounds of OEM carpet. THe center console is probably 30 pounds. That brings the total to 190 pounds lost. Then adding the dyno mat in brings it back down cuss that crap is heavy but I like a "smooth" sounding ride.

Can you guys see the pics? (I can't)

For the back I was thinking 255 50 18 or 255 55 18

But I'm no wheel and tire expert. I want to keep the DIA close to the same because I like the estimated trap speed at the end of the quarter that I was getting.

Than you got to much wheel, looking at toyo's chart you'll need a 295/45 to work with your rim, and keep close to stock diameter.

Since you are running 10's in the rear, you could get some 295x45x18's and then some 255x50x18's for the front? I have no idea how well these tires would fit. I just know they are about 28" tall. Looking foward to seeing pics up when you get your new wheels and tires on. Spend all the money you want, but be sure to keep at least 100 bucks in the pot to send me later this month;)

Edit-Wow tech, we think alike:)

I think the 255/55/18 would work fine on the front, a 9" wheel. That's a 29" tire(stock 15) while the OEM 16's are 30" high. I might think about a 275/55/18 or a 275/50/18, those can go on a 10" rim okay I believe. Do check with the rim maker, and think on it for a while.

The taller aspect ratio tires aren't as crucial for wheel widths versus section widths. That is, as the tire is shorter(40 series), the section width choices become much fewer. Try to keep the tread width close to the wheel width. It's better to be on the narrow side with the tire, and very bad to go too wide with the tire, versus the wheel width. Handling goes away when the tire gets too wide for the wheel, and that's not going to happen with those 9" or 10" wheels. The wheel wells and suspension keep you from going too far typically.

Or your just copied my ideas:p:

FYI, the taller the tire aspect ratio is, the better the off the line traction is. A 40 series tires just spins, a 70 series tire flexes a little more. It's a tiny difference, but for starting traction lean to the taller tire.

Why would I copy someone slower than me?:D JK. I was playing with tire size calculators and thinking of what mustang guys usually run when they put 18's on. Then just trying to up the size a bit.

I think jakee needs to find something as close to the width of the rim as possible unless he wants to be like the 350Z guys who are starting a new trend of rolling the sidewalls on their tires. As in putting a narrow tire on a wide rim:thumbdwn: I'll leave the tire sizes to you guys since I really don't know whats best. Don't take that comment wrong, I really don't know what would be best for those size of rims. But I do know I am going to make 100 bucks this month:)

True and it can also depend on the tires compound. If he has a soft compound with the correct tire pressure, he could easily due just fine on a well prepped track. And being that if he gets a tire that will fit a 10" rim properly and his posi works, he shouldn't have much trouble hooking up on the street with the much larger footprint. I just want to see a before and after video of Jakee doing a takeoff with the stock tires and then the new setup. I expect a nice smokeshow with the stockers and then a little squealing and peeling with the new ones.

These aren't going to be track tires, at least I hope not. He's going to have traction problems running pretty much any street tire. I think the only way he's going to hook reliably at the track is with a set of m/t e.t. streets or similar in the back and then putting some skinny tires on his stock rims for the front.

I understand that. If he gets something that has a treadwear rating around 250 or less, it should hook better than we expect. If he picks some that's over a 400 that will last longer, then he will sacrifice traction for longevity. I am sure Jakee will buy the cheapest tire he can instead of shelling out $250+ each for some high quality tires. At least that's what I would do. Anything he gets will hook better than what he has now.

I have a burn-out vid of the stock rims and tires with the turbo. You'll have to find it but it's in this thread somewhere. I also have a vid of me loosing traction that you can see on the Speedo. That's in this thread somewhere too. That's all I can give for the "Before" comparison.

Come on guys; let's come up with one tire size for the rear on one for the front. My life depends on you. If ET's are the way for the rear then I'll look at the options and post in here. I really need your help with the tire thing because, like I said, I'm a complete moron with wheels and tires. I can modify what ever is needed but really don't want too. As far as the rear-end being tight, well one thing I do have other than stock is the cal traks. That shouldn't do much for side to side movement. I also have the xspec rear sway bar and I'm running coil over sensa trak shocks. If I could get a pic to post I would show you.
