3rd gen Explorer Coilovers

I got you, forgot about the extended eyelets. I like the top mount idea. Alright time for me to start getting all this together.

i have a second gen with coilovers

one thing i would like you to find out before you go ordering the 5 inch travel shocks is,
cycle the shock all the way from bottom to top that is on there right now,and find out how much travel it is for a stock application,

after that , that will give you the proper collapsed and extended length for the coilovers you want to buy,, don't just guess, do it once, do it right,,
after that you have to look at the height that the top eye will be raised,, than ply through the Fox Catalog at the collapsed and extended numbers till you find the proper ones,

i know it sounds easy to say oh they just have 5 inches of travel,,
but do they really ???

Fox's site has some numbers for collapsed and extended, but the 800 number and a call is easiest way to get the whole story i figure,,

if your going to do this, i would like to see it done to perfection the first time so that your rig will work great and it will benefit others that want the same thing,

I got you, that is my plan. I just can not trust everthing I read on the internet.

If I use a 1/4" plate on the top, I wonder if these would be a good idea instead of welding tabs up there.

Thanks for chiming in Corkey.

To get a true measurement of the collapsed length, the coil would have to be removed from the OEM strut. According to Monroe, however, the total available strut travel on the OEM struts is less than 3" (for some reason the number 2.5" seems to come to mind).

One thing I did discover was that the numbers published by Monroe don't measure extended length from top mount to eyelet. For some reason they measure from the point where the lower eyelet connects to the strut body, and from the flange that the upper strut mount connects to. But I don't think that affects the travel length numbers, since you're still going to have the same difference in collapsed length and extended length no matter where you start from on the shaft and the shock body.

if they were round and had a few more bolts and some gusseting i think so,, maybe see if anything along that lines can be found

I like the idea. But I wonder how wide it is between the two tabs. Don't want too much space for the shock to slide around in there.

You''re still going to have to drop it down some from the plate to make up the difference in effective length between OEM/w Truxx and the Fox 2.0 5"

you don't let the shock slide around,, you get bushing stock and cut them proper to take up the slack,,
than tighten them in place, they shouldn't slide at all

let me get a pic of mine setup properly,, as it will help later,

here is a mounted coilover, with the washers and spacers as they should be to hold the top eye solid but allow angular movement as it cycles,,

i turned the shock a bit so you could see the bushing stock,,it's usually in the middle

Maybe I should get on like yours.

that is on a 96, pretty sure it wouldn't work on yours,,

but it may give you ideas ,,

This is ours, if I use 1/4" plate mounted, I should be able to use on like yours.

Thanks for all the help Ronin and Corkey, I really appreciate it.

mustangs had an upper mount that looked like this,

another possible option right there,,

Nothing new. I am thinking about doing a SAS so this is on hold until I make my decision.

Well after long thought out process, I am going forward with this. Hopefully get started soon. What I am going to do is box in the the lowe control arm in the places I have marked.

For the top I am going to use 1/4 plate, and make something like this.

For the bottom mounts something like this.

I am going to go with fox 2.0 6.5 travel. I going with a 550lb spring.
