3rd gen Explorer Coilovers

I got it straight on my mine, I did have the right angle on the strut. I am getting about the same numbers, so I am thinking about 650lb for me to with a 5" travel shock.

cool  Guess I'll look at ordering shocks and springs soon. Who did you find had the best price on them?

EDIT: looks like Poly Performance has good prices with free shipping. They even have the 3.75" lower eyelets. Should be able to get all the shock parts and coils for around $600

I am going to get my shocks from 4wheelparts, and everything else from summit racing. I'll get my 3.75" eyelets from polyperformance. I am picking up a set of used lower control arms this weekend for 40$ for both.

Got my coils and brackets in today. I went with 650lb ones from summit racing. Now all I need is my used lower arms and my coil overs.

Awesome. I've been drawing up the specs for my brackets. Should have a pretty good design by next week and be able to get started then. Will also be ordering my coils, shocks, and eyelets tomorrow.

If either of you get stumped on how to design something, post up and I would be happy to help. I have a few ideas on how I would do a coil-over setup as well, but to lower my Explorer instead of raising it.

Thanks! I'll probably end up posting pics and stuff in this thread for now if rangermidtn doesn't mind. When done I'll do a separate thread as a writeup for the 4th Gens.

Ordered all my parts today. Decided to go with a 700lb spring, re-ran some numbers and that will put me right about at 50% shock travel, so I'll have 2.5" bump and 2.5" droop. 650 would have given me more droop but I'd have to either preload the spring more or make longer brackets to get the ride height I want.

Thats cool with me, I am still waiting to order my shocks.

Polyperformance told me today that the 5" Fox 2.0 shocks are on back order for the next 2-4 weeks. Will give me some time to work on the brackets and other thinks. After cracking one of my running boards on the trail this past weekend I'm going to do up another set of sliders but mounted to the body like yours.

Cool! I am waiting on the fox shocks for a while, I went with a cheaper pair of QA1's I got off craigslist. I am goint to use these at 1rst to make sure everything works then I will get my Fox shocks after working everything out. The Qa 1's measure 18.5, my lower brackets measure 1.75 to the bolt holw so these will clear my cv axle. I am working on cutting a old pair of truxx spacers I have for my top mounts. I am going to fill the center with a 3/16 plate. My truxx is a little over a 1/4" thick, so I am putting 2 pieces of the 3/16 plate into the center, this will be used for my mounting brackets. Hopefully soon I'll start working on it.

Cool, I've seen a lot of the 2nd gen guys on here running the QA1's. Good idea on using the Truxx spacer as the top bracket. Mine are still new in the box so doens't make sense to do that in my case, figure I'll just sell em.

I got my coilovers today, all I need now is my used lower control arms and I'll be ready to fabricate.

X2!

Couple updates, I got some used lower control arms. I finally decided how to do the the top mount. I do not have a plasma cutter, so I found a place online that sold 5" round, 1/4" thick plates. I will use this for the top mount, and 3/16" plate on the control arm. Now just waiting for the metal to come in.

I'm going to do a rectangular top mount plate (with beveled corners). I figured this would work since the Truxx spacer flanges for the front are basically rectangular.

Thats what mine will probably look like after I get done with it. I already know from some measurements that 5" is to wide.
