'99 ohv 4.0 cam build

ok great, that really clears things up. A flash tune is really what I was looking for in the first place and there are a ton of speed shops here in Cincinnati. Thanks for the good info, it really helps and saves me lots o money:)

May wanna call them first but im pretty sure they can do it with your year and model.hell its worth 250-350 for as many pulls and a tune.and you get to see what your putting down.what size tires and wheels do you have?makes a HUGE difference on power for a dyno.

I have Michelin MS2's. 235 70R16, 29" overall diameter.

Shouldn't lose any power there then;) im going to guess 173hp,thats prob high but you are 5speed and 2wd .most stock.ohv is in the 140ish range keep us updated;)

Now I think the cam sensor is leaking oil. I fixed the leaky valve cover gaskets and oil filter but there is oil dripping down the bell housing and from what it looks like there is some wetness around the cam sensor housing that was not there when I reassembled. The Ford guy said my sensor needs to be replaced anyway but I really dont want to tear everything back apart just to replace it. I been thinking about pulling the motor in the fall and doing second gen pistons to get close to 10:1 compression. There really isnt any info on how much more power can be had with another point of compression with my mods.

Umm you have second gen piston, you would need first gen pistons.you would gain 10% of whatever power you have before, maybe a little more with the 422 cam.what gears do you have and what kind of driving do you mostly do?if you want power i would look towards going to 4.10gears

oh right yea I meant 1st gen. At 70mph Im right at 2200rpm. So Im guessing like 3.27's or 2.93's I cant remember. I thought about going with the lsd 3.73 rear end but I really dont want to sacrifice mileage. We have two other 2nd gens one with 3.73 and other with the 4.10. the one with the 4.10's is just too low. I dont do any towing and not planning on getting big tires. My cousin's 2nd gen also has the 4.10 in it and from dragging him on the highway I can say that the lower gears didnt help at all. Honestly the only reason I would want to go to the 3.73 or 4.10 would be to light up both rear tires lol, but the wheel hop on this thing is more than terrible

4.10 Wouldnt help you on the highway ,thats not the point.4.10 would help you in 1/4 mile track times tho.why i asked what type of driving you do.i Wouldnt drive a heavy ass explorer unless it had atleast 3.73, unless i was using it for highway use witch i would never because the ex is not a mpg vehicle

good point. I been contemplating a 3.73, every so often I find one in the junkyard with less that 150,000 miles on it. On raising the compression, 10% increase in power is very very tempting. Thanks for the info and hopefully Ill have dyno numbers up this week

Its worth it.not only do you get more power but the power you make will be more eficient.ill be staying tune for the dyno numbers.

Dyno shop finally got back to me with some disappointing news. They say I need a tuner and I can get one through them for $470 and $100 an hour to tune it. Their Ford guy estimated 2-3 hours to tune. So as of now Im doing some more reading on tuning possibilities. But here is an ok video of what I got. Ill do a better one when I get the 2nd gen pistons in there and all tuned up.

Huh thats odd.could have sworn they could flash tune it,may wanna call another shop.how much would they charge just to do some dyno runs with a print out?also you can use the eliminator chip, its cheaper but the handheld would be much better ,worth the extra money.sounds like James may be the best route to go if you do end up buying all that stuff.
ps you mean first gen piston;)

Yea, Remember remote tuning isnt cheap either.

SCT + Wideband O2 for hardware.

No point in sweating it until you yank the motor and install the pistons.

yes again FIRST GEN. I better get that straight when I purchase them! Yea Ill call around to some other shops before I make a decision on it.

Hahah ;) did you ask them how much just to do some dyno runs with a print out?i agree with dono tho i wouldst even worry about a tune till you saw the print outfrom a dyno or raised compression

Its $150 for dyno and printout. Thats a little more than I want to spend especially if the dyno reveals that I need to tune. But Ill check around at other shops, maybe someone else will have a better price on dyno runs.

o wow yea that's expensive!!most places charge $25 each pull with a minimum of 3.one place charges $50 for 3 pulls.i would defiantly call around

Just talked to my guy and he said it does need a chip or handheld.so guess i was wrong,no flash tunes:(

I also called around and got the same answer. Must have a handheld tuner. Some of the dyno shops around have $25 dyno runs every so often. Next time I hear about one Ill jump on it. Im curious to see what it makes right now. Once I get past 3500rpm it starts pulling nicely. I think Ill go to the junkyard next week and try to figure out a custom throttle body setup. I feel like the small stocker is really limiting things.

You can use a eliminator chip also, about half the price.my guy said he may have a used one he could sell you.there is no other tb that fits besides the bbk 66mm unit.you can polish yours and do whats called a "half shaft mod" that cam should come in earlier than that but the ex is not a out the hole truck its mid range unless you got good gears.

Ill eventually go with the sct tuner once everyone is done. Right now Im working on getting a 3.73 out an AWD v8 explorer. Im also going to use the track bars that are on it to help minimize wheel hop, but retain my single leaf spring configuration. The track bar bracket holes are already in my frame so they should bolt right up. I also installed a SHO coil pack. I was haulin hard in 4th at 5k rpm and it hicupped on me. The SHO coil is good for 8k so that should eliminated high rpm misfires. Im also working on making an adapter plate for a 4.6 SOHC throttle body. Ive got a 97 Lincoln Town Car MAFS housing and with a little work my MAFS will drop right in. I cant decide if I should try to find a larger airbox or go with a conical filter. There is not much room for a bigger one in there and its been hard finding one with the right shape and correct angle on the inlet. As you can tell Im trying to keep things very factory like. The throttle body size is 65mm so Im really going to try and make it work. Everything should look like it came off the factory floor, especially if I can find a stock style big airbox.
