I've put a 99 Front bumper on our 97 with the foglights, I've also added the bezel with the switch.

The 97 has the plugs that the foglights plug into, so, I'm hoping it'll just be a case of running a wire to the fuebox and putting in a relay.. ?

How do I go about this? Wiring is not my forte..

There should be a fog light fuse and relay in the power distribution box--or, at least a location for them. Hopefully the wiring is already in place if you have the fog light sockets near the bumper.

Thanks , I know how to wire the relay in, what I wanted to know what wiring in the switch so that the foglights can only be turned on when the lights are on, and which wiring circuit on the factory loom is the one to use...

Si

My fault. I'm nowhere near my Explorer to give you that much detail now. Wish I could help!

yours is an 01, the wiring will be diff at the fusebox I imagine, no biggie, I think I've got a harness downstairs I can compare to.. (Explorer parts hoarder... )

I think I already read that one this morning, I read through a fair few threads before I posted.. I'm going to have a look through the fusebox and relay diagrams to see if I can tap into something, failing that, I'll just have to tie into the switches behind the bumper and run all new wires.. :(

I just read over this one again
clicky

And I'm pretty sure that all the relays are there already, I've just gotta send power to it to turn it on, all the other relays seem to be in the same place as my Explorer, just gotta check for a fuse...

ok, build date on this truck is 07/97... and I checked fuse 4, and it's a 20a not a 15a.... so. I'm gonna do some more digging...

I've also gotta work out how those small relays are wired in... the pegs are numbered 1-5 not like an aftermarket relay

Si

ok.. so.... I checked that little relay box under the airbox and it has both the relays in it like you have on a 99+ ....

I'm wondering, if, as in the linked image further up for the fusebox, that the relay in the main fusebox for foglights, has a wire I can tap into to run the switch to?

Wiring isn't my forte as I'm colourblind... it should be simple enough to fire power to one relay...

Si

Actually, it should be plug and play, Si.
If you have the harness in the dash and hooked that up, the fog lights should plug right in.
The fuse box/relay box under the air filter is where the Fog lights hook up, since those relays run to the headlights.
The plugs for the fog lights are right next to the ABS plugs. If you don't have those plugs, then you can grab some from a scrap yard and splice them into that fuse box.

It's an XL - So no wiring from the firewall inside the cab, so no plugs in the dash.
The harness is there from the firewall around the engine bay to the bumper, and his hooked up... there appears to be 2 relays associated with foglights in the little relay box below the air filter, and according to that fusebox diagrame there's a relay associated with foglights in the main fusebox...

All I want to know is... where do I send the power from the switch? which wire on which relay????

^^ that will help you understand a relay and how to wire one up using the diagram which is on the side of most relays.

The switch should energize the coil. The coil will then magnetize and cause the contacts to come together ( or move apart depending on the desired output) which makes the contacts "close" ( or open) the secondary circuit

So, in this relay configuration you would apply the switch wire to 85, and ground to 86 ( or the other way around)

12v switched to the fog lights would be attached to 30 ( from battery) and 87 ( to fog lights) , and the lights themselves grounded to the frame.

Does this help?

Please show me a picture of the diagram on the side of the relay--and, look real closely for molded in numbers on the bottom of the relay where the prongs are-:D

Ah, ok, I thought you were using an aftermarket relay. My bad.

Let me dig one of those thingys out and see if I can make sense of it. Be right back

Thanks Jon.. I wanna use as much of the factory wiring as poss... the relays are there, so might aswell use them, I just wanna run the wire from the switch to the relay, then I'm gonna cut the pin off that other relay in the small box, so they stay on with the brights...

I picked one out of a parts box-
F57B-14B192-AA

on the side is a diagram. It's hard to see until you hit it with light.

pins 1-2 are the switch and ground .

Battery to 3 and fog lights to 5
