IMHO, may I suggest a complete tune up. Include the: air filter, motor flush and re-fill w/oil and new filter, fuel filter, pcv, cooling system flush and re-fill w/ new coolant, plugs and wires, run some sea foam, and don't forget the fuel system cleaner added to the fuel.

Clean the MAF and IAC……it’s a little more involved:

I KNOW that you have done a lot of work already….....in fact you wrote some of those links. I made the list mostly for others, to check off and move on. Just as an idea.

Aloha, Mark

Injectors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aldive - The 4.6 TB IS NOT THE PROBLEM!!! TRUST ME!!!

The thing that helped me with a slightly rough idle was when I had the injectors cleaned. It took several can's of Techron and cleaning at the dealer plus a seafoam treatment before the finally straightened out.

OK
I think I understand Al to say there is no "problem"
He has had this idle quality, since the truck was new.

I think the goal is to smooth the slightly rougher idle, which is usual for a 60 degree v-6. ( no offense)

Correct me if I am wrong--

My injectors are fine. I run FP60 all the time.

I know that. I removed it for another reason; it will be back on soon.

Good, just making sure. People are under the assumption that a 4.6 TB has a bigger bore where the Butterfly is. It's EXACTLY the same as the stock 4.0 so the intake mouth is not a problem.

Jon, you are indeed correct.

None of the above needed.

Al
If you sit in my truck for a bit, I promise yours will seem to idle as smooth as glass lol
It is the low vacuum which causes the lope

I was experimenting with intake tube diameter--trying to increase idle -off throttle vacuum. My small intake tube produced a smoother idle, and gave about 2 in more vacuum. It seemed snappier--although I have no proof.

This will hurt performance on top--I wonder if it would hurt economy, which is really all about torque developed at 2300 rpm's---???

I feel the same as you about the tornado--but as a scientist--you could play with that thing just to see if you could smooth the idle. I know you have a vacuum guage. Bend those vanes steeper, create an obstruction. It would give you an idea????

I am not suggesting leaving it in--but maybe you could tailor the vacuum, and the idle mixture a tiny bit richer ( thru a tune)

Sorry guys, just trying to help....

A rough idle indicates a problem in my opinion. Also, I have the same motor as AL and I don't think mine idles rough. However, my conception of rough vs. yours may be different.

If you're getting 30+ MPG idling rough then I would leave it alone. Maybe that's the secret.

Good Luck AL.

every 2.9L, 4.0L and 4.0L SOHC truck I have driven, sat in, worked on has a slight stumble at idle, it is the nature of th eV6 I am afraid

it was there brand new so I dont see it as a problem or something that you can expect to cure, its there from the factory.

Good Luck AL.

All help is welcomes, thanks for yours.

I have never been in a V6 Explorer that had a decent idle in my opinion.

Getting 30 MPG and over 200 RWHP tells me nothing is "wrong". I just want it better.

Just out of curiosity here, no offence 410, as I know you work on these things for a living right?

Maybe Aldive could take a sound clip of the engine at idle before we make the conclusion that it's just that way from the factory. I could do the same with my truck to compare the two maybe?

Again, I don't mean any harm here, not trying to stir ANYTHING up. But I feel this would be the most scientific way of coming up with a conclusion. OR, we could just say it's good and move one....

Just makes me wonder if you got a one off cam gring or something? Stranger things have happened...

My motor hardly makes any sound at idle; the e fan is louder.

This is just a hobby for me it is not how I make my living.
I personally hope Aldive can solve the stumble but I am under the impression it is just a question of the engine balance, being mounted on rubber mounts, and well just the nature of a Ford V6.
I am not trying to stir anything up either I just like to toss in my 2 cents here and there.

My cammed V8 does not idle so smooth, in fact now when I drive the BII with the factory v8 I cant even tell if its running hahaha

410, your thoughts and opinions are always welcomed by me.

I too hope I can solve this.... I shall never quit trying.
