Betty's "I want to be a mule" progress log thread

Thanks Mark. I will refer to the chart.

Since I had a little time and a dremmel tool with sanding drum I used Don's idea and got this. By golly I think the nut is a thread lower now.

Good job, saved that hole.

Nice!

Ok, over the next few days the replacement engine will be getting:

New oil pump
new pan gasket
rear main seal
timing set
timing cover gasket
Water pump

Hopefully some engine color to the valve covers and intake so I have all new gaskets for the upper plennum, throttle body and egr elbow
ECT sensor
New hoses.

When will the list end?

Probably never. :D Or when the engine is in and running.

Don't ask that question, or it soon will become much longer.

new 363 short block
new CHI 3V heads + intake
new valvetrain
new injectors
new real headers
new custom cam
new tuning
500hp, done.

Ok, guys I have a few issues which are causing me to work slow. I mean even slow for me. Keeping that in mind.

Some pictures are for my future reference

And here is where I must take a break

And this, well, this is what happens when a truck sits for months.

Thermostatat
Spark plugs

I had an issue going on, coolant temp as reported by ECT sensor and shown on the scangauge was going down when heater was off. in the 186 degree range. However when the heater was turned on it would go to 192 or so which is where it should be.

The problem was just as I suspected. The small coolant crossover tubes running to the upper intake manifold were clogged. Unless the heater was on, no coolant was circulating thru the bypass tubes, therefore the coolant on the ECT sensor was stale.

The combination of no coolant in the intake and inaccurate ECT input to the PCM probably affected the fuel economy.

The plug up was induced by the previous owner in attempt to seal up the heater core, which was also clogged when I got this truck. One of the intake coolant hoses was cut and re joined with a smaller diameter metal nipple. That is where it clogged up.

This is why I suspected it was clogged. ( it just hit me a few days ago)

The connection was right up front. I might jumper across the bypass tubes and leave the upper disconnected for cooler intake charge.

opinions?

In this picture you can see where they connect to the upper intake

I didn't remember water going to the upper intake, I thought those were vacuum.

They are coolant passages. Purpose? I guess to warm the intake air for winter driving.
