Well, Perry, Joe Dietz and myself made it to holy cross :). For those of you unfamiliar with Holy Cross trail out in Colorado, heres how it is described in the COlorado Guide -
Difficulty: Difficult. One of the most difficult hard-core trails int he state, offering the ultimate in non-stop challenge to serious four-wheelers... body damage is likely even for modified vehicles. Winches and lockers recommended. Do not drive this trail alone

While only one vehicle (mine) made it past the hardest obstacle on the main trail (there are a few obstacles above the city that are said to be rarely conquered, and many people total their vehicles attempting them), we had a great run! I had to winch myself to get through French Creek (which was great because after paying $1000 for that winch, I actually got to use it on myself for once!) After I conquered French Creek we sat around and watched other Jeeps try it and it was satisfying to see that even heavy duty hard core jeeps with currie axle, detroits in both ends and mega-lifts were having to be winched through this portion of the trail. Of the 15-20 vehicles we watched go up french creek only three (two jeeps and one unimog) made it up without giving it many many tries or winching. It looked much different from the pictures I had seen, assumably from people kicking out rocks spinning their tires attempting to make the obstacle. I wish I'd taken some pictures of where I was when I got stuck and finally decided to break out the winch. I was basically high-centered on all by one wheel. The rock behind my passenger side rear tire was placed just so that I couldn't back up without doing some major damage to my rear axle, and couldn't pull forward because of several large rocks up there as well. With a little winching to get me pointing in the right direction the rest and past some of the rocks, the winch proved its worth :).
The trail was a great series of obstacles, all of them challenging but none of them impossible (except for French Creek, which pretty much needed a winch to get through) and a few spots which required some spotting, and it definately had no problem reaching the difficult rating.
However, seeing as how I was the only one to do French Creek, I was the only one with any damage to his vehicle. I pretty much flattened the rocker panels on both sides (time for rock sliders yet? naw...), put a good sized ding in the shackle for the rear passenger side leaf spring, fortunately enough its in a spot that won't require replacing the shackle as it still seems structurally sound), as well as bending up both rear quarter panels from landing on them (time for the Penner mod? Not yet...) and of course the most serious damage was when I landed very hard on my front bumper which bent it up in to the body, bending the drivers side front quarter panel, as well as the piece of body underneath the headlight, and forcing the headlight out about 1/2" (time for the perrys fab n fiber conversion? Hmm....). ALso somehow knocked a weld loose holding one of my PIAA 80 Rally lights in place. It wasn't the weld that broke but rather the steel in the warn winch mount that the tabs were welded too. Not sure how I'm going to fix that one yet. Unfortunately I took almost no pictures of the trail as I was too busy concentrating on getting done without killing myself and my passenger (ha ha) but I do have some pictures of the damage. I know Perry and Teri took a lot of video and hopefully we can get some stills captures and posted.

And the lost weld (can't be seen to weld because its in the shade, I'll try to get a better picture soon).

Good job Matt! I do approve! LOL If I didn't have to go to canada this week I would've gone. I have to pack up all kinds of junk though this weekend. Going for 3 weeks or so. That looks awesome!

Are you laying down a challenge matt?

I've already conquered the toughest part, I don't need to challenge you. LOL Although if you want to attempt some of the trail above the city, I'd be happy to watch and take pictures :).

tsk, tsk, tsk.

You had to *winch* on that part Matt.

Your supposed to be challenging the guys with f/r lockers to do it, without winching!

ahh I see... hmm... ok, well I challenge you to make it up without winching :).

:p
Yo Matt,
You made it up the tuffest part we attempted. There are two other obstacles that make the French creek look easy. This is per the High Country boys. They are up above the ghost town.

Joe

yeah thats what I was challenging Tom Davis on :). I've heard of those obstacles and have heard of some of the horror stories, which is why I said if he wants to try it, I'll videotape :).
Technically, the trail ends at the city. From what I hear, the trail that goes beyond there is just insane.

Sounds like a great time Matt. Are you going to do this trail again on Sunday or are you going to do Wheeler?

How about a description of French Creek and way everyone needed to winch there. Deep water? Rocks? All of the above?

Pretty intense stuff. It sounds like this place is no screwing off. A couple guys from LaCrosse where there a month ago in a cherokee and a TJ both equpped with 4" Terra-flex lifts, and the TJ was second and snapped a rear axle shaft, needless to say as the TJ stood immoble, the XJ could not manuever around him so they had to hike down like an hour and a half to get off the trail and then locate the part and before going on there way. Sounded like one of those "You gotta be kidding me" stories when I heard it.

I think it was one of the funnier trails we have taken this year. It would have been better if not so crouded. It would be better to camp and leave earier in the morning.

The obsticles were rock with water and with the water you pick up the sand. French Creek would be the hardest because of the two 4' rocks you have to get around.

We heard there was one more obsticle before the city that was also hard, but we didn't make it that far this time. Having front locker and you having bigger tires you would do a lot better.

Hopefully this weekend I'll try and get pictures off the video and post them.

Wish I'd had the time to go with you guys - sounded like fun! I look forward to your pics, Perry...! :)

I'm posting these photos for Perry.

whoops! he sent those to me too I forgot to post em, thanks Rick. it was a great run, I think Rick and Tom would have a blast on that trail, even Gerald if he thinks he could make it :).

What about me??? Id have fun... Until I broke something... Then I'd not be having so much fun anymore... And since we all know how carefull I am on the trails... Well... We all know I'd break something... Probably something expensive... Then Tara would be mad... This just wouldn't be a pretty site then would it...

Thanks Rick for posting the pictures for me. You would think Matt would have done it since you can see his Explorer on the other side in the third picture.

I think if that one big rock wasn't right in the middle we would have been able to go the rest of the way to Holy City. They say once you get to Holy City there is a boulder field that is really tuff with BIG rocks.

Yes it was a busy trail, but then it is a fun trail so that goes with the territory.

By the way the Toyota is someone we met off the Colorado board that was going to meet us but was running late. As you can see he caught up with us.

Gee whiz, look at the photos Rick posted.

Awesome. Just, well, it's just; Awesome.

Awesome scenery, trail, and experience. Seeing and driving that stuff is why we are here, right? Isn't being at that place, doing that, what all of this is all about?

See you at CCR2001. I may need your winch Sunday. ;)

Can I go first?

... be my guest :D

Gerald, in response to your question you posted in the ccr thread, most of the damage (if not all of it) was done at french creek. There were a few near-stock Cherokees that made it up to french creek and may have made it past, we didn't stick around to watch.
