My dealership wanted nearly 4 grand for the 7 year/100K/0 deductible plan. Politely told them no thanks, I can get it for $1100 online.

That is sad. You also do not need to even order it online or probably from a dealer right away do you? I thought I read you can buy it at any time before the original warranty runs out.

You can buy it anytime before the manufacturer's warranty runs out. But get this, the start of the ESP will revert to the date that your manufacturer's warranty started! I had to read that twice to make sure I was seeing it correctly. It was posted in a thread by Seni.

I thought the same exact thing. So that "7" years is really only 4 years. The extra 3 you already paid for with the vehicle. It should be your 3 PLUS 7 years for ~$1100.

It reverts, but the key is mileage--after 2.5 years, you will know if you want 60K, 75K, 100K, etc. In my case, in the next four years, the Adren will not see more than 12K a year, which makes the 60K plan perfect.

No maintenance plan attached. Oil and rotations are always done by a local shop, and bigger maintenance (i.e., tranny and transfer fluids) are one and done items. So, there was no need for a high price plan as it'd never be fully utilized.

Still wanting to hear from Zeigler or receive the contract. Growing a little impatient.

So the discussion in the thread about what else the dealer has tried to get people to buy made me think about the ESPs. Perhaps we can compare what folks are offered at their dealers (or on the internet) here. That would let folks have a one stop shop for pricing ideas when they walk in to meet with the bean counter at the dealer.

Also, I was considering and ESP for the first time with this Explorer, but only after a couple of years. Now I'm considering it might be easier to pick it up with the truck purchase instead of trying to purchase later. What are the opinions on now vs waiting?

I have been researching ESP, and found a dealer online selling it for almost $500 less than I was quoted from a local dealer. Their website is fordwarrantys.com.... Seems legit. I am even canceling the extended warranty on my wife's 3 month fusion and going to go with the ESP from them....

fordwarrantys.com is still overpriced..

For anyone intersted, email jhawley@tworiversford.com. His name is Joel

I believe he is the finance manager. He sells all Ford ESP's for $100 over his cost. When I bought my warranty for my F250 diesel, he quoted me for the gasser by mistake. Long story short, he honored that price and took a $300 loss on it (diesel is a $400 upcharge).

For example.

fordwarranty.com - On their website, a 7yr/125,000 mile extended with first day rental, premium care is $2,304. That is REDICULOUS

Joel will sell the 6yr/125k warranty, $50 deductible, first day rental, premium care for $1,600. Obviously the shorter term, shorter mileage and/or higher deductible will lower the price.

The way thiings are going with the MFT, heck, one major repair will be more then the $1,600.

I am not affiliated with Joel, nor do I personally know him or making any type of commission or benefit from this.

I don't think any dealer would take a $300 loss because of an ESP misquote.. but he did and I will always buy my ESP's from him regardless on whether my dealer would match it.

You can also do the 0% financing on it. I had to give 10% down and then the rest were broken up into equal payments.

Anyone thinking of getting it later, the price goes up $200 once you have gone past the 1st yr or 12,000 miles

If you could, please let him know Brian referred you to him. It's just my way of saying thanks for standup service.

Can you get a Ford ESP after your purchase? 2 months into my Ex and beginning to wonder with all the bugs if it might be worth it now.

I replied in another thread but here's what I wrote..

You can buy the ESP within the first year or 12,000 miles, whichever comes with no surcharge. There is $200 bump in price if you buy it after the first year/12k but before the 3yr/36 bumper to bumper expires.. I see Ford now offers enhanced first day rental so they will cover $75 per day instead of $30 towards a rental for an extra $80 or so. That is huge.. When I brought my F250 into service, I'd get a toyota corolla or Nissan Cube. With $75, I can get a nice SUV for a rental.. definately a nice upgrade for an extra $80 +/-

Tks for the info, def going to look into it. Curious what others have done and where they got them from. Assuming you can buy from any dealer even if its in another state if its a Ford ESP.

I so just sent Joel and email to get some prices before going in to pick up my Ex tomorrow afternoon. Even if they offer to match what he offers I'm probably gonna give him the business from here in Columbia, MO. I flock to people like this as this is how I run my business as well.

Does anyone know the invoice prices on the ESP plans? I want to be armed with information when I'm facing my dealer. I'm looking to purchase a 7-yr, 100,000 mile plan with $50 deductable, first day rental. Looking at blwnsmoke's price for a 125,000 plan, I'm guessing it should be $200-$300 less.

Also, any real value in the service plans? After looking at the owners manual, there's not a lot to be done on the Ex's.

Hey all,

This is Seni with Ford Customer Service. I would like to confirm that you are able to purchase a Ford ESP after you purchase the vehicle. However, this should be done while the vehicle is still under bumper to bumper warranty. The ESP start date will default back to the bumper to bumper warranty start date. For more information about the ESP’s available, check out www.FordOwner.com, there you can review the plans and choose which would suit your needs best. You may contact the ESP sales service center at 800-367-3377, with any further questions. If there is anything I can do for you, let me know!

Seni

Why not get it through Joel. You wont find it less then $100 over cost and you wont have to negotiate with your dealer.

I thought about maintenance plans, I want to look at the maintenance book to see what needs to be done. Between oil changes at every 5k, lubing chassis, coolant flush, trans fluid change, covers brake pads and labor.. I think it is a good deal. I saw $1,400 for the 5k interval up to 100k. Im going to ask Joel his price since I know he will sell that $100 over cost too.

I think you might be (or maybe I am) confusing a Service Plan with a Maintenance Plan.

I agree with you, there is not much required service on the new Explorers (oil, filters, fluids, plugs for example). This would be covered by a Maintenance Plan, if one was offered by, or for, Ford.

But, I think the ESP, is for unscheduled maintenance & repairs. Correct?

With my prior 3 Explorers (2003, 2005, 2007) and all of them going over 70,000 miles (last one did 121,000 miles) I never had unscheduled repairs anywhere near $1,600 in the 2-3 year ownership experience. Which should come as NO SURPRISE! That how the insurance companies selling the ESP's make money.

For the average owner, set aside the $1,500-2,000 dollars in an account for repairs only, and the odds are you will come up ahead in the end. Just like the insurance company does.

@Bill#4 - I agree with the idea that the ESP is a waste of money...normally. It is like the casino offering insurance on a Black Jack table. They wouldn't offer it unless it was in their favor :)

My concern is the "brain" being a Miscrosoft product and the fact that it is basically a PC with a shelf life. Any ideas what it would cost to replace the Mytouch system if it went belly up after 36k? Is it something that can be done outside the dealership?

Bill,

These new Explorers have so much technology that can go bad over time that an ESP covering the tech alone would be a wise choice IMO. The rest of the issues would just be gravy.

I currently own a BMW 330i and when the idrive system (computer that runs the radio, nav, bluetooth) goes down, it costs $1,500 to repair. I know because it has happened once at ~75,000 miles.

The real question is if the ESP will cover these exact type of issues. A good question for the people at Ford.
