I got a letter in the mail yesterday saying that ST 2001-2005 need to be taken to a dealership immediatly for a service recall. It says that even with the truck turned off there is a possibility for a underhood fire. Just a FYI we all need to go get this fixed.:salute:

Possibly for the scds 05S28 Recall...

Speed control deactivation switch...basically the switch that tells the cruise to turn off when you hit the brakes. We do these all the time at my dealership. It only takes 2-3 minutes to do, So if the dealership tells you it will be a while, raise hell...

What ford is doing to remedy the problem is inserting a fusible jumper harness link between the actual switch on the master cylinder and the factory wires going to this switch.

With that said, if the tech who installs your jumper harness notices brake fluid on your switch, the switch will have to be replaced...which still only takes about 15 mins.

One way to tell if you have/need the recall is to look here...

If yours is round like this one, you dont need the recall...

if it is rectangular, then most likely you do need the recall

Good luck

I got my 5th yesterday.
"Despite prior notification we are unable to get you off your butt and do this recall thingy blah blah--

I like the last sentence. It's a good scare tactic.

"Until your vehicle is repaired, please park your vehicle away from structures to prevent a potential underhood fire from spreading"

My BBK throttle body is fighting my installation of the cruise throttle cable, so my switch is disconnected with the harness routed away. It will probably never be needed so I am in no hurry for them to poke around under my hood. I wonder if they will send someone by the house eventually--

Go get your recalls performed-seriously. If my cruise control worked I would have had it done by now.

Well thats the same call out I/we had done recently in the UK-Makes you wonder eh?

This recall has been out for a few years here also.

You can just take it there, let them do the recall, then unplug it when you leave...That way you stop getting the letters, and if anything WERE to happen, ford is liable, not you

i just got a notice in the mail myself...I posted elsewhere about it. But I have the square one. I had disconnected it and taped the end and put it where its not close to moving parts.

dang y do our explorers always come with recalls

Gregg,

I hate to expose myself as a fool, but could you please point out exactly where to look? Having no frame of reference I cannot tell.

Thanks a million for your help...it is posts like this that make me glad I found this site.

This is the speed control Deactivation switch. When you get your recall letter, the first line or so tells you which recall you need.

This is the jumper harness that is going to be installed if needed...

if your cruise stuff looks like this then you already have the recall performed.

Notice the "switch" is rectangular and red....that is bad and causes this; if the recall is not performed.

and finally...the reason for this recall

The switches installed on certain models leak internally. This means that brake fluid seeps up through the switch, to where the wires are connected to the switch. The brake fluid completes the circuit between the two pins in the switch constantly, causing the wires to overheat and combust. The brake fluid itself doesn't ignite, the wires do. That is why if your switch is wet, then you get a new sensor. But if it's dry, then they install...basically a fuse...between the connections. If the brake fluid seeps, the fuse will blow. then no fire.

Honestly, if i got a letter for the cruise recall....i would unplug the sensor connection, and "spill" some brake fluid in the sensor. That way you get a NEW sensor, and not a crutch for your old sensor.

scary.... going to go check it on my break!

Gregg, you rule! Thanks.

Crap... its red...

Ford did i went up to the dealer to buy the parts and the service guy came out to check it out he told me that it had been recalled and i never got it fixed, but anyways he told me to hold on a sec and got on the phone 10 min later he got the ok from ford to fix everything that was damaged in the fire.

It was not that bad i got the fire out fast thank god it happened in my driveway.
