2000 Mounty
We have been driving the Mounty quite a bit, drove about 125 miles to KC for weekend holiday at parents. During the return trip home, about 30 miles into the trip with 1/2 tank+ fuel, the engine stalled, then picked up again. This resulted in a horrible thunk from torque converter, as you can imagine.
It happenened again, so I pulled off and looked things over--no CEL, nothing awry, so we headed off again.
We made the trip back, barely. I must have pulled off 6-7 times looking for anything I could think of. It seemed to run good for a while after we pulled over, then start cutting out again.
I noticed when the engine dies--my air fuel ratio guage goes "lean" -- in fact drops completely off. This leads me to believe it is a fuel delivery problem. I would think if the ignition was cutting out, I would see "rich"
I had swapped relays on the 4th roadside check, it made no difference.

Also, it seems to get worse as the tank is getting lower---ok---fuel pump.

Not so fast. This is a BBK 255lph fuel pump, which came with a Powerdyne supercharger kit. It is only 2 1/2 years old, and only has 10,000 miles on it.
I really do suspect a bad pump, It might be my imagination, buit it doen't seem to "whine" with the same pitch when I first switch on the key.

So, I guess I am asking for second opinions.
I have yet to drive with the scantool running, we were a bit loaded down and crowded.

heater core--now this.

Fuel Filter? Injectors? I'd replace the $5 filter and run some seafoam or other injector cleaner through the gas tank....

Thanks--
I guess I should have stated--everything under hood is relatively new.
injectors-intake manifold, engine, fuel pump all have less than 10k miles.

I probably will try a new filter--although it was replaced with the pump earlier.

The problem with troubleshooting this is, it is intermittent, and happens only under load at highway speed.

I am thinking of using my webcam and laptop, rigging it up with a light under the hood so I can watch my fuel pressure guage.

isnt 255 a bit of overkill?
Aftermarket pumps like that have been known to fail after short terms of use.
I would rather see a 190 Ford Lightning pump in there rather then a BBK unit, the Ford unit will outlast that sucker big time.

I suspect the pump/wiring from what you describe

so you want to run 255?

I was talking about a stock ford Lightning pump for reliability

thats the one! Although you buy just the pump and fit it to your Explorer in tank unit, I believe it is 190 from the factory.

guesssing is fun, just buy it and stick it in there
:)

I would not buy anything with "Taurus" in the name or title.
That's a whole other rant which does not belong here.

This may be completely off the wall but...

Maybe check your fog light filters? Just something really easy.

I guess my thought here is; if the filters you've placed in your foglights are the only source of air to your intake, and those filters get clogged, then maybe your primary filter is good and you're still not getting the air needed.

Nevermind, that would create a rich condition.

ooooh fog light filters, I would love to hear more about this!
My buddy Joe has vaccum parts in his front bumper for ducting more air into the engine bay

Jon does not have the air intake mounted in the bumper. It is under the hood in the stock location. I know because I have seen his Mounty in person.

Those pictures I showed you were older, after trying that I ditched it ( water in filters) As dan said, I no longer use that setup.

I'll get another picture of it up--it looked real cool!!

Yes, I realize this. He also has filters where his foglights are and hoses that run up to the intake. My way of thinking was; if that was the only source of air for the engine, and the filters were clogged from driving thru the wind for that many miles, then strang problems might happen to his ride. It's probably a shot in the dark and totally not the problem, but it was something easy that most wouldn't think about.

It's probably the fuel pump but wouldn't that suck for it to be something else after changing. I've been there and done that TOO many times.

I'm glad you did cuss it was blocking all the air, IMO..
