This weekend I want to make a heatshield for my filter in the engine compartment much like the K&N kits have. Can anyone think of any material at homedepot I could use? Plastic and withstand heat?

Lexan I think it's called. Clear looking plastic and comes in sheets.

Just another suggestion. Build the template with something like cardboard OR MDF. Then use it as a template to cut the plastic. That stuff's sort of expensive and you dont want to mess it up.

I can buy sheets of ABS plastic or any other plastic for that matter in any guage I need at a local plastic supply warehouse for el cheapo!
The place supplies plastic to sign makers mostly but they also carry bullet proof lexan and the like...

You can also use sheet steel from Home Depot or similar, but plastic is sometimes easier to work with, lightweight, and makes a great heat/water shroud to protect your filter....

lexan is pretty damn expensive, would plexiglass work?

I was thinking of a black plastic....kind of what is used in gardens or something that divides things up. I just need a name of something where I can go to homedepot and ask for it

Another name for Lexan is polycarbonate. Thermoplastic stands up to heat the best. There is a special kind of heat shielding that is used as insulation. It comes in a roll, is metallic in appearance, and has bubble wrap inside of it. I've once used this to replace the padding on the under side of the front hood on an 89 Mercury Sable.

Actually, a black flowerpot might be a good start

As crazy as it sounds, I think you're right.

With the "Black Flower pot", you can cut the bigger hole in the bottom for you MAF, along with the 4 mounting holes. Then attach the filter to the MAF adapter, place the filter and adapter in the pot and attach that way. This may sound weird but I honestly think this is the best heat shield you'll find. Not to mention how cheap it is.

The only thing I didn't like about this idea was the flow Pot. My idea was to use a stainless steel bathroom trash can from how depot. It comes with a flange on the bottom but I'm sure it can be knocked off pretty easy. I was going to do this is the next couple of weeks along with cutting out my inner fender to allow the air in.

or a small bucket :)
You can always open your phone book and look up PLASTIC or SIGN Makers then call and ask where to buy sheets of plastic.

I bought a huge roll I use it for all kinds of crap......

A roll?

I might just stick to plexiglass if it stands up well to heat???

yes the plastic I bought is ABS (can be welded to other ABS with a plastic welder) it comes in rolls because it is only 1/4" thick, 1 yard by 5 yards is what I bought like $65
