How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

Post number 869 has been selected as best answered.

189K on my '98 5.0L. Finally got to replace the ball joints; upper were shot but the lower still had life in them. Fuel pump done a year ago. The usual coolant leak from the passages in the timing cover repaired a while ago. Radiator replaced a few years ago. Just like in any other Ford with the 8.8 rear diff, the ring/pinion gears are noisy and will be done at some point. Sway bar links may need replacement (for a second time). Minor leak from rear engine seal, responsible for 1qt loss between oil changes, which I won't touch until it gets a lot worse. Slight degradation in (the very poor to begin with) MPG; may merit replacing the original O2 sensors at some point. This thing will still be going strong when the 2015 Edge that we recently purchased bites the dust.

Cool, Yeah I've read on here they really corrected the overall issues with the timing chain cassettes / guides in the latter years, starting about 2002 and then more improvements later on. Good to know, thanks.

Other Points, Original Plugs and Wires, Exaust, Suspension, I have changed only 2 Bulbs ( Same One twice ), Replaced Alternator Twice, Replaced Thermostat Housing 7 Times ( Plastic Crap ), Front and Rear Brakes 1st Done at 104,000, Just an Amazing Truck..... I am the only owner and have always done Full Synthetic Oil Changes since day 1.

I keep buying them used and give them all hell, delivering mail. My four have 152k, 245k, 254k, and 268k miles, the 99 SOHC hasn't moved since the trans went at 152k. It's harder to maintain them when you buy used, the prior owners often don't do maintenance, and create high oil consumption etc. My first two don't eat oil, maybe a 1/2 quart in 4000 miles, but my last two eat about a quart per week, too much internal engine wear from poor oil changes.

I bought mine at 77,450 miles, 98k, 158k, and 171k. So my total driving of these for about 22 years has been just 415k miles, about half of that is severe duty. The V8 engine and trans are about the most reliable Ford ever made. I'd love to have the need to rebuild a pair of them for a long term keeper vehicle. Maybe my spare will get that, the SOHC/5R55E are fine units, but I'd much rather have a warmed over 302 and 4R70W. That'd be a fun truck the way I'd build the engine(if a decent header was available).

Here's my white 98 with a big load from a typical heavy day in late Summer, 8/02/2023;

Built Ford tough!

My 1998 5.0 has 325k on it. It's had 2 water pumps (2nd one was botched by previous owner) and a new radiator/ fan blade. Rear main seal leaks over 3k rpms and takes a quart every couple months. Transmission cooling lines will need to be replaced soon. It will easily hit 105mph at 7-8000ft above sea level. This one came from the Kentucky factory which seems to have had much better quality than the other factories.

Previously owned a 97 XLT with a 4.0 SOHC from the Kentucky plant. Lost the transmission at 175k and at 225k the transfer case went out. The motor was rock solid though.

I also had a 98 XLT with a 4.0 SOHC from the Missouri plant. It died around 125k.

Impressive! How do you find out where your Ex was built? Mine has 188K, just lost the reverse gear last month. So I'm moving again and going to find out how long the rest of the gears last, LOL Wish I could afford the tranny fix/replacement but they want 4K.

141,000 on my 2000 XLT 4x4 with the 4.0 SOHC
Timing chain fingers crossed!
