How to: How To: Install Signal Mirrors On 3rd Gen Ex

Prefix for threads which are instructional.
Hope all goes well!!

Well my install is delayed a week because one of the mirrors was broken when I received it. So hopefully friday I will be able to install them.

Just one last question, with how much force should i use to push the mirror on because I do not want to break it when I put it on.

Mine snapped on pretty easily. Make sure you use even pressure.

No problem. Just trying to give a little back.

Here's a little update: Last Sunday night I forgot to fold my mirror in and I was rewarded with a smashed mirror. Luckily I had my old mirror assembly with the glass, so I installed that temporarily. New signal mirror kit on order. Glad I have a write-up so I can install it when it gets here!! :p:

New signal mirror kit arrived today. Now I just have to find time to replace the broken one!

Yes sir they are! My whole mirror assembly was destroyed, not just the glass. Still haven't got the new one installed. Hopefully I can get to it today. If I remember correctly, you had a mirror smashed too.

If you remember, when I first got the signal kit I discovered that my passenger mirror was an aftermarket job. NHarris installed 4th Gen mirrors and was nice enough to send me both his 3rd Gen mirrors so I had a complete mirror assembly to install. I got lucky. Nate, if you're reading this, thanks again. :biggthump

I will post up when the new signal mirror is installed.

Rick, due to the aforementioned circumstances, I now have a spare passenger side signal mirror. If your passenger side gets smashed before mine, it's yours!!

Hey Rondo, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I have officially retired the old girl. It needs some minor work on the engine internals, but it needs a lot of work on the suspension and drivetrain. At 556,000 miles I just don't trust it out on the open road anymore. :(

You're welcome! You going to turn her into a trail rig?

Finally got the replacement signal mirror installed. I couldn't use the existing wire that ran out to the mirror because it was too short due to being originally installed the other way. I ended up splicing the wiring in the door. All is well again!

I just finish to install new signal mirrors in my 2002 Explorer. I got mine from Hillbank also. Great service and price.
Easy job (three hours at gentle pace) thanks to your excellent instructions.
They work like a charm. Now my Explorer has all the exterior lightning in LED, (corner, tail, license, third brake, puddle) and even has a Philips LED DRL.
Thank you BigRondo for this very useful thread.:salute:
Cheers
Andy

You are welcome Andy. Glad I could help.!

This is to also say thank you for your thorough write-up that i think is fool proof.
I was able to install mine just yesterday. went smoothly throughout until the part where i have to root the cable through the driver's door into the cabin.
no matter what i did i couldn't get it through to the other side. I took more than 90% of the time i spent on the entire install without success.
In the end I had to root the cable through driver's side fender not the cabin. But it works.

Thanks again

I used this guide to do the removal of my old busted mirror. I wish I had cool signal mirrors but alas, I only have a third party OEM replacement. Still, happy to have a mirror again.

You're welcome, glad I could help out. Snaking the wire can be a PITA! I love having the signal mirrors.
