If you had a second gen Explorer, what engine would you put in it?

$8k for the engine, then you need a transmission adapter. By the time you get everything you need to put it in a vehicle, you are around $11k for a motor that puts out 160 hp and 295 twist. Great for a subcompact car.
Yeah to much for my wallet 😂

Cat rates the c4.4 at 411ft-lbs is there a different version that puts out more? Still impressive regardless. Cat makes good engines. Also how much do those cost?

Tier 3 is rated at 143 hp and 411 lb/ft. Tier 4 engines are rated at 200 hp and 610 lb/ft. If you find a used genset the prices range from $2k to $6k. Some units I've seen have only a few hours run time. The motor is less than 25 inches long with a similar weight as a 4BT.

Sounds like an awesome swap option. How is the aftermarket support for it? Also, is there available trans adapters etc, or would they need to be built? Adapters are hard to build, but having available aftermarket support is really nice. That sounds like a very viable option. I'd definitely consider that.

Trans adapters are available, it has an SAE #3 housing attached. Aftermarket bellhousings are available as well as some factory transmissions since the duramax 6.6 and ISB 170 have an SAE #3 housing. The duramax, the #3 housing is found on the bigger trucks like the topkick. If I had a 2nd gen explorer, it would be the engine I'd swap in.

I decided to start this thread to hear all about what engines people would like to have in a second gen Explorer.
Personally, I have loved the 4.0 SOHC for all the abuse it has held up to, but I am pretty sure I got all I could out of mine and am planning a drivetrain swap.
The 5.0 Pushrod engine that came in 4 doors would be an easier swap in my 2 door as they already came in 4 door models.
Having a love for superchargers I want to boost mine but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to bolt a roots style supercharger on the 5.0 pushrod engine.
What would you put in your second gen Explorer if you were going to do a drivetrain swap?
Picture for attention.

I would love to have a 347 stroker with a hidden twin turbo kit underneath it and a built auto trans with fmr valve body and keep it awd with 90s cobra wheels 🤙

I want to see someone take a mid 90s obs 350, 351, or 383 shoved into an X. Those suckers all can put out some serious power! Especially that 383, dad gum that would be nice! Not sure of the dimensions on them in comparison to like the explorers 4.0s and 5.0, but I'm sure it would be a tight fit, wicked if and when done!
Going to keep trying to convince @Fix4Dirt to be the first on a 5.7l swap, after having one in the Rado, think he needs to try when his SOHC gets to that time in its life 😂

406 be cool too but a 347 stroker would be factory fitting like a 5.0

True, very true, but go big or go home, shoehorn the biggest one ya can fit for the most power lmao
To be fair, a 383 would fit pretty much the same too, slightly different mounts of course, but a similar size engine overall as the 347, especially compared to the factory 351 option, 350 bored into a 383 would fit fine, but you could also just bore the 351 over at that rate. Definitely a lot of thought to be had and plenty of fun ideas! Want to see more act upon said ideas! I'm too booked for a while with my sohc rebuild to try and afford it myself right now, but may be a supercharged sohc would be just as fun...! Lmao

before i had someone come up and want to buy mine i was considering going 7.3 gas. may still attempt that at some point in my life.

This might be up your alley then! It's a member on here who built it. Not exactly how youre describing it but this is somewhat similar.

The fact that it's a sport makes that sucker so much better, less weight for more power!! Lmao

That's a sweet truck. Give it a long read and drool. It has custom real headers on it, it's 2WD which made those headers possible, and a five speed manual. It's really clean and well done, definitely a special one of a kind Explorer.

There is another Sport that has an LS in it, a member friend(Eric) built it long ago, it's a medium blue 99 that had a 302 swapped into it before. That's probably one of the trucks you're referring to. Eric and I were members of the now long gone Explorer "X" forum, it was small but there was a ton of info on it about Saleen Explorers and some smaller swap stuff.
