Jakee's 4.0 SOHC Build up discussion and motivation thread

Check this thread out. More doubters that didn't believe me, and the traction problem. This is when I was almost completly stock, but I'll admit the road was not the best surface to launch on.

Doubters???

Jake, not everyone knows your combo and whether or not you have an open diff or LSD. Stop interpreting things as such a shot at you instead of just as feedback and open thinking. I don't think nearly as many people in here are "out to get you" as you may think. The ones that were have already been banned for a while (you know who that was).

You will need a better differential very soon, start planning for that. Depending on what boost and gearing you have, a gear change may also be good for the truck.

I really want to go with 4:10 gears. I think this will help the truck get into the power band quicker. (I currently have 3:73 gears) I'm really not concerned with the speed my engine will go at 60 MPH. I don't think 4:10's is over doing it for our heavy trucks. Just my opinion.

Rocket - You may be correct but I have good reasons. I don't think everyone is out to get me.

By the way, I'm lowered an 1-1/2 all the way around. Got the x spec rear sway bar too. It made a heck of a difference in the way the x handles.

The y-pipe.....well, I have to re-do the Flares and flanges up top. I thought those flanges you get from AutoZone would work (the kind that seperate) so we welded the flares on there only to find these cheap things bend like crazy when tightening up. It was leaking just a little on the passengers side at WOT. I've ordered the right flanges and will get it done right. Oh well. Don't use those flanges from Autozone....

Actually I was thinking of going the other way with gears. As the horsepower gets really high with supercharging, gains can be had by lowering the ratio. I also have 3.73:1 gears, I'd consider doing 3.55's in mine, but I plan for my truck to be able to tow with. You need higher ratios for towing. Night,

hmmm. Back to the drawing board.

This may be one good reason to have a chart. You can see where the "power band" is and you can make decisions that would put the truck in the power band for the most part? Am I correct?

James - Are you ready for the remote thread? I'm almost ready. I'll pick the wideband up from you soon.

i just have to find my way to alabama now.... ;(

James - How streetable is that rear-end you have? Is it better than a Traxloc in your opinion? Does it whine when turning or so on?

I am running a stock 31T Trac-Lok rear with the carbon clutches (not stock clutches). It is very agressive and does groan a little in the corners. It also chirps the inside tire on a tight turn.

I agree with upgrading the diff. But depending on the type of boost you will be running my recommendations will vary. If Jake decides to go with a Turbocharger then I would recommend a stock gear. Turbos like to be under a pull to perform properly so a change to 4.10's would be a waste later down the road if he were to go with this type of forced induction. I have reinstalled stock gears on turbocharged cars numerous times and the performance increased as well as the fuel economy. Jake, my truck we 9.67 in the 1/8th with stock gears na/'d so I don't believe the 3.73's are hindering you like you think. I have always run stock gears with good results.

Superchargers like the lower gear (numerically higher) and turbo's thrive on higher gears (numerically lower)

Okay, it's starting to make sense to me now. Stock gears it is.

well i just want to add in here, 3.73 as a stock gears is allready high thats not a normal one, for most cars or trucks. i think camaros come with 3.11s. 3.73 gears are about the best all around gear for street use IMO not only for acceleration but it gets you good highway miles. but if you're not gonna drive down the highway and are gonna be racing i'd tell you to go ahead and step up to the 4.10s or maybe like 4.56s

I agree with you on this one on the 3:73's....I disagree with stepping up to 4.10-.56's because he doesn't need to shift into 5th with is tranny racing the 1/4 mile and with o/d off and 4th gear he will be just about redline when he goes through the traps. Suprisingly 3:73's are just about perfect for his combination. The only real way to find out (if he were to make a track only machine) is to go to the track with different gears and see what rpm he traps at. Suprisingly the Ex is geared about right from the factory. I can't say that about many other vehicles. I change rear end gears all the time for my mustang customers.-jh

Got a wide band on the way.

This one - http://www.hensonperformance.com/Productsftel.html - Part number is 3801

Jake

So you got the analog display? Or does this picture go with that item?

He is probably just going to log through the Xcal2 for right now and hook it up to a gauge later.

I've got the gauge coming as well, and that's the one.
I'll worry mainly about logging first, then add the gauge. I hope to be ready for the remote tune thread very soon. I'm thankful for the oppurtunity James has given me here and I'm thankful for Robert slapping me in the face too. heheh

I love your reasoning for edit on the above post. :bsnicker: You said Rocket!

G2[1].jpg

Yes this pic does go with the item. 3801 & 3802 are analog guages and the 3795 & 3796 are digital guages.-jh

The only bad thing about these gauges is you can't measure crapton with them. Oh well. maybe they'll loop around?

Jake you should know that those are only available once you supply the makers with your turbo serial number. Its like getting Saleen parts for Saleen vehicles.
