Id search this but have no idea even what the hell to look for. its a new sound my mounty decided to make. when accelerating at about 1300, not 1200 nor 1400rmp, it sounds like a vibrating metal plate or pan or something. its the only rmp it does it at, and its only at exactly 1300 rmp (probably just the right vibration frequency). anyways, its up front, and when i put it in neutral and pin it at 1300, rolling or stopped, i wont get it. bout dead center up front, maybe even a little on the passenger side. any ideas?? me and all my mechanic buddies are stumped. i thought maybe flywheel or my transfer case is that much closer to giving up the ghost. ANY imput would be appreciated.

ill check it out tomorrow, and get back to you on that. thanks!

I think it's an exhaust heat shield. Get under there with a rubber mallot and bang away on the exhaust.

That was going to be my first guess. Mine did that for a while, and I finally figured out what it was one day. For some reason it stopped ... I never did fix it.

I had a very similar problem on my 00' limited V6, really made me mad when cruising old town fort collins and where there is all the medians and side walls inbetween the streets and shops/bars it would just echo so bad. I took it to a shop and they said that they had no idea what it was and charged me for my car being in their shop for 2 hours, and still had no Idea what it was...I took it home and jacked it up and set her down once some 6"x6" blocks under the frame and started her up. I had my friend slowly rev and turn wheels while I pin pointed the noise. (This is off of almost a year of memory)...anyways If I do member correctly it as a small dust like sheild that was infront of my transfer case. There is was a rubber garmet behind it to keep dust out but I think that this peice of metal was there to keep bigger things from tearing up the rubber garmet. The small metal sheild was pressed onto the shaft running into the transfer case but I think it fell off, so using two flat head screwdrivers I tried to press it back onto the shaft, between the two screwdrivers and a rubber malet i got it pressed back on...

Now I am not sure if this is the same problem as what you have but, if you go under your car and look for a small metal sheild that is around the shaft running into your transfer case, and you can wiggle it, you will know right then if that is the same noise that you are talking about...if that is not it then you prolly won't be able to wiggle it...

Good luck and let us know how it goes...

haha its funny you say that, because thats why im getting fed up with it. i have to drive through old town every day to get to work from school and it echos like CRAZY . getting to be kind of embarrassing.

thank you all very much for the feedback! ill go pound around under there when its daylight. ill keep you all updated. keep the ideas comming!

alright guys, after being busy the last couple days, i took a look at it. a heat sheild on the exhaust pipe after the first cat was very slighty loose. sparky, i couldnt find what you were talking about, theres nothing around my tcase and the front shaft looks like it has a clear path. found a busted exhaust bracket behing the passenger door, so ill fix it tonight and see if that shuts it up.

jtsmith...the rubber plug.... is it about 1 or 2 inches in diameter? ill check that if the new bracket doesnt fix it. again, if anyone else has ideas, feel free to chime in. thanks!

Very Slightly loose, eh? didn't know that was possible. ;)

that could very well be that noise, i've heard so many old trucks make that noise

The same noise was a heat shield on my old Explorer. Hopefully thats what your was too...easy fix!

cat converter heat shield is my first guess for sure, guess what you ahve at least 4 of them under there.....

You can weld them back up, tie them down with large clamps, or rip them off
