Moab 2005 June 3-5

I hate to be the village idiot, but allot of people have no idea what this MOAB is, myself included. So someone should first take the time to explain what MOAB is all about in some detail? Once everyone knows what you are talking about, then newbies such as myself may would want to join in.
Thanks, and remember all the "W's".

Easiest way to explore is to type Moab in your browsers window and see all that pops up on the web. In short Moab is a 4x4 and mountain biking Mecca located in eastern Utah about an hour from the Colorado/Utah state line on I-70

My graduation is also May 27. I agree with JTX

So should we set the date for June 3-5? According to MOAB.net there isn't any major event happening that weekend so the trails should be relatively clear.

Sounds good to me :D Anyone have any conflict on that weekend?

Moab is a state of mind....

Pure lunacy on wheels...

Rock rash on the sheetmetal...

and about as great a place to 4-wheel as God ever made! :burnout:

Really? Even returning to the spot of the wedding? hahaha or is that like for the 10 year anniverssary?

Jamie, probably like for the 10yr anniversary … one thing about getting married is that all of your hobbies all of a sudden cost twice as much :D She’s been with me on several fourwheeling trips now and I owe her a cruise before the next 4x4 trip :) which is hard to budget for when unemployed, lol.

BBQ Hotdogs, Moab has about a hundred trails suitable for anything from 2wd to easy 4wd to insane 4x4 rockcrawling. At first we had lots of stockers on our runs but I noticed last year that the rigs get more built as the years go by; everyone that comes gets bit by the bug and wants to build up to do harder trails the next year. Moab is addicting. A couple of years back we tried to get all of the streeters to come and ride with us but none showed up. I’d still like to see the street/lowered Explorers show up and join us just to meet everyone on the site and have a large group for ridealongs on the trail.

Gerald, are/would you be interested in blessing the event with your excellent organizational skills again this year?

Sounds like you’re already doing a great job Mike, LOL. I was going to check the Moab calendar but you’re already ahead of me

We have always avoided busy weekends but I had thought about checking out Memorial Day and how early we would have to get places to stay to go there that weekend; that way we would have a 3 day weekend for the event, but I’m sure that would be hard to pull off. One year we scheduled later on because many college students asked for it so they could come. So we did - the weather was over 100 degrees every day and cooked our entire group the whole weekend - and only one college student came to the event  so it will take somewhat of a salesjob to convince us to do that again.

Anytime after Memorial Day is a gamble but the weekend right after it works for me too. If you want me to I’ll post a poll to see how that weekend works out, but all you college guys on this thread had better come this time if we wait until then. Otherwise most of us would probably prefer coming earlier in May or the last weekend in April (April 30th is Ray Lobato's and my birthday and we had a Moab birthday party during that run).

As far as coordinating the event, you did a great job before too, but I’ll be happy to this time and keep track of who’s coming and stuff. The only real issue is our annual group dinner and we are starting to run out of options. The Branding Iron is really the only place to do it; otherwise the best idea might be to have a potluck BBQ at one of the sites at the Canyonlands Campground. What do you think?

At least you guys had AC. I was cooking in the cab of my ranger with no AC. I remember there were a few other college kids that had asked about pushing it back but I was the most percistant about pushing it back. I had a blast and if things work out I may try to make it again this year.

Hey, no one is getting me into a pot and getting lucky, ROFL.

First weekend in June  sounds like a great time to be in Moab! Come on BBQ, round up some of your buddies with the big wheels and little tires. ;) Come see how the other half plays. :D It's also at, one of the neatest places on the planet.

Gerald, I was thinking along the same lines as you as far as the group dinner. It seems that we have run out of choices and if a potluck sounds good to everyone else it would probably be the safest bet.

As far as dates, the last weekend in April is the annual April Action Car Show. This shouldn't effect the trails much, but the town is almost as packed with hot rods as it is with Jeeps during EJS. The Memorial Day weekend is the Art Festival. I doubt it would have much effect on our activities but again, the town will be packed. Ultimatley its up to the group to pick a date.

Earlier is better in my opinion. From my own experience, if you go to Moab when it is hot and you think you might have overheating problems, you will most likely overheat. I never had a lick of trouble with the BII overheating until going to Moab. I started to overheat on the first trail we went on. I haven't had trouble since then, but I would not like to repeat the experience. This happened at the end of May. I think the end of April would be perfect. Shouldn't be too hot. Just my .02. Now I have to convince the wife to let me go to Moab and Colorado. :D

My opinion is - earlier is better because of the heat, but I'm game for whatever the group decides.

I'll check the weekend Moab event dates like Mike has and pick some empty weekends in May and the one after Memorial Day and then post a poll tonight so we can start voting.

Bump for a couple of new thoughts. It looks like the first weekend after Memorial Day is getting the most votes. I also visited with Rick and talked about the run - and both he and Char can make it if it is that weekend, plus he had an interesting idea. Some of you may remember reading about the run I made during my Herc Tour back in 2001 (do a search for "Herc Tour") when I joined Peter Weber and Leebo for their Moab Colors Run that November by spending two days on the remote White Rim trail. Rick mentioned the possibility of Exploring the remote Maze area of Canyonlands National Park, and then I thought of the Hole in the Rock trail that follows the old Mormon route. Either run would be two or three days and require primate camping in VERY remote areas. Would anyone be interested in participating in an adventure like that either before or after the regular event? At this time it is just in the brainstorming stage, but once Rick mentioned the Maze idea I like the idea  obviously most won't be able to do it because it will require too much time off of work, but for those who could, we would like to get some feedback on interest in the idea.
