My Quest for 13.XX version 1

Any idea how much power you're truck is supposed to put out?? 14.8 is a little slow, granted the Mounty weighs alot yes but still, with a 2 sec 60 footer i'd think you should be turning better times. What RPM did you launch at?

I bet Jon and I both had the same problem of just totally losing it in the top end. The speedo just wasn't climbing as fast after a few hundred feet down the track. lol

I think he was having bigger problems than me though, judging my the times.

I was peddling it to 2500

Jon, I was comparing my best time to your time and they are somewhat similar. You must get to the track soon to test some cutouts, I am curious to see what changes result. What was the temperature down there when you ran?

I brought the rpms up as far as I could. I think at 2500 mine would want to take off, so I was around 2300-2400 if I remember correctly. I went mostly off sound and feel to find a limit.

Jon We need to have a "Price Is Right " On your next Track run Times. We could guess the closest time without going over in the 1/4. Then you could Post Up your Track times and declare a winner. I think its a neat idea..

Hmmm, did you even mention this to me while I was there? My wife would have LOVED it if I found some GOOD excuse to stay another couple days! ;)

How about adding more ignition timing? Or retarding the cam timing to bring the powerband into the upper RPMs? I think the best thing to do would be to put it on a dyno to see where it is making power, then make adjustments from there...

Hmmm, Maybe we were too busy discussing other things-
We only had a short time you know-

When I was building the engine, most people I discussed it with were worried about the low end I would loose, so adjustments were made accordingly-

The cam has been advanced 4 degrees to bring the torque peak down.

So, now that we are really into the game-we see that horsepower is indeed needed over torque.

I think that more tuning will be needed but right now he just needs to make lots of passes down the track to learn how to drive it. No offense to Jon but I would bet a good chunk of money that his driving had a big effect on those times.

None taken--
I saw green way too long, was wearing too fat of shoe, windows down, had to be told to put my helmet back down on my head, ( I had it flipped up like sunglasses)
not to mention the distraction from that El Camino--

:D:D

You shouldn't be seeing green at all, you need to leave on yellow:D

I've always said this but others just didn't understand it. (HP WILL WIN OVER TORQUE)

If you really understand what's going on you'll agree, but you have those that are set that a high torque motor is faster.

Your torque can start to reduce up top HOWEVER, HP is a measurement of how fast the work is being done. If the work is being done faster, then who cares anymore about torque.

NOW - there has to be a happy medium to get you off the line. Also, for trails a high HP motor is probably not what you're looking for. You don't want to have to rev to the moon to get over a bump.

I wouldn't add more timing until I knew how much you're running at this time. Let us know.

JT, if you are worried about your exhaust than we can help each other out! I sold my '97.5 "X" and pulled everything off that wasn't stock including the decent exhaust. The way it is set-up eliminates the aft cats with a narrow Spintech X-pipe, two 40 series Flowmasters and about 8" of pipe before it dumps. It bolts into & hangs from all stock locations and everything is 2.5" pipe. This exhaust screams and will effectively eliminate your hearing over long hauls, but if 13.xx our what you want to hit than hearing is negligible. I can shoot you over some pics tonight and shoot you over some of the new exhaust pics I had promised a while back. You know there is more in your combo and I know you don't want to get outrun by a stock 302'ed AWD truck out of Texas!

Well, here are pics of the exhaust on my truck. Yes it is dirty, yes I have washed it, yes it gets dirty again--

Dual 2.5" in single 3" out magnaflow in place of the rear cats-
Hooker Aero chamber 3" in 3" out stacked right behind.
3" tubing over axle
MAC tailpipe-with 3.5" tip. Not to crazy about the tip, but oh well. Still have a bit of track rubber on there--

It is still "loud" by any standards, but the highway sound is very pleasant according to my lovely bride.

I have noticed beteen my two exhausts that the new one with the single 3" out the back makes a huge difference on the low end! My set-up is similar to yours with a Magnaflow X-pipe and Y-pipe in for good measure with no secondary muffler. What are you running cat wise?

not trying to argue but that is a big difference in 60 2 tenths down low should make a bigger difference on top.

I like the ^ idea. honestly jon from the 60 and from what you describe it sounds like your running out of steam. i noticed with my 5.0 the low end was not impressive to me and it also ran out of steam quicker then i would have liked. i wasn't ever so possitive an e303 was a bad move on these. I was real torn between making a torque monster for towing and something that would be fun to drive. best bang will probable be in changing your cam timing like justin said just set it back to stock and make no other changes and see what you get.

work on the 60 if your pulling power all the way through dropping a 60 will result in quicker times. what gear and rpm are you crossing the line at? aside from starting in 1st what rpm range are you seeing?

I wasn't saying that they are the same, but similar. I did not have as good a launch as he did, for obvious reasons, but aside from that, the performance was similar. This means that something is not right, as that 347 should have taken him a lot farther/faster than my 302 did.

Jon, what was your RPM at the trap and what gear was the truck in?
