My under hood "bug"

jt do you still need to use a obdII reader i have a scan tool that you can use i am in kc

You guys are great!!
Mike, I have a "borrowed" scantool. It is pretty cool!
I am going to have to buy my own, I'm sure this one needs to find it's way home soon.

Where in KC are you? I lived up there for 12 years--know the area well.
Do you ever get down to this area?

We were just up there for the rennesaince festival--
In fact my mug pic was taken there!

I have an answer here! In the SCT custom tuning software you have to scale the displacement anytime you change the physical engine size(aka boring, stroking, etc). Second part of the problem is using a MAF adjuster is just a temporary fix for what is really needed (tuning). Not to start a large debate here but please hear me out. The most important tuning you can do in the software is your MAF transfer function. Now when you start "manipulating" the output voltage of the meter several problems will occur. First and foremost you will get low speed bucking and not only that you will get skewed load values. Just think of it like this, The MAF transfer funtion is seen in the computer several ways (ad counts,# mass tic, etc) but the main thing you need to make sure of is your voltage. You can take your voltage and with a formula calculate ad counts, #mass tic etc. One thing to note is that the meters range is only 0-5v,period! 5 volts being pegged,SCT only recommends running a meter within 80% of its range so that you have a safety factor built in. I will not make this a tuning session but there are other adjustments to make in the software to regain your driveability. If you like your cam then don't remove it! The cam is not your problem. Ford never designed the Ex to have cams and be a screamer they designed a grocery getter and I have been reminded of this everytime I opened up my tuning for my truck. (Values set lower in certain areas than Mustangs pcm, etc) If you have any questions just let me know. I never check this section so I haven't seen this post till it was brought to my attention. I only go in the sport trucks need for speed and modified explorer sections. Maybe I should get out more!LOL!!!!!!!!!!

James
I will be calling you when I get the $$$ together--holidays first--humbug!!!

OK
Back to my throttle linkage.
I have to say--when this truck is floored it runs scary loud--and pulls hard.

Still--with key on engine off--floored from gas pedal --tps is only 61 percent!!
When opened by hand from under hood--95 percent.

I need to fabricate a new linkage--the throttle pull has an arc to it, which my current bracket position doesn't allow.

Another alternative would be to change the ball location on the throttle lever--moving it closer to the center--???. I wish I had good metal fabrication skills.

BTW Jon, have you inspected your throttle mounting, the firewall area? There is a common problem with the spot welds breaking. The fix for that is just adding two bolts through the firewall. Hopefully you don't have deflection there,... or maybe that would be good news. Regards,

Thanks Don.
Yes, I have looked there, mine isn't loose or broken yet--( find some wood)
This is definitely an issue with the Throttle body--Linkage--cable setup.

I do think this is in the wrong area--moving to need for speed forum

say what? Your throttle cable is not pulling the butterfly open 100% t teh pedal?

Is the spring still in place at the end of your cable?
Have you considered the TCable mod or would this not allow it to close fully??

I assume this is all because of your custom intake manifold and TB?

I could weld you up a bracket but I am afraid i will need your engine for testing

I am happy to report this thread officially dead.

James (jah81592) has completely cured this problem through tuning. It was a fuel injector pulse width issue.

The truck drives like a normal car now, and has been for 2 months without a single pop of the hood.

oops
I did have to give techieman33 a jump the other day-the hood was opened for that.

Thanks James!!

Yeah, I should have probably disconnected the battery since the doors were open for a good chunk of the 3 days it was sitting there. Oh well.

:thumbsup: for James seriously he did an amazing job. It's so much nicer to be in it now. If you hadn't looked under the hood you wouldn't know it wasn't stock until you got on it hard.
