yeah im shocked at the amount of bump steer I get with just the 31's... my power steering is full... but on I use my truck on my ranch and following the ruts gets to be a pain in the ass

Does anyone know how hard it is to change a power steering pump? I think I've already asked this question in another thread, but I don't think I got an answer... mine whines constantly, so I think it's on it's way out, and although I know that I can fight with the wheel if it dies, I'd rather not lose my steering doing 100+ on the highway... Is the stock pump good enough, or is there a better one to look at getting?

These have been plugged but you can see there are holes every ~4" or so.

look into the 5ohs pump....changing it is 3 or 4 bolts its easy.

The PS pump from the 5.0 SOHC? Or is 5ohs a brand? I remember reading somewhere that if there is air in the power-steering lines it'll cause the pump to whine... I don't mind flushing the system and changing the fluid, but I don't want to take the time to do it and end up with the same problem I have now...

And as for 1st gen aftermarket parts... yeah, it kinda sucks... but, I suppose that's what makes our trucks unique... either fab something up yourself, or make a part for something else fit...

the 5ohs is just a way to say the plural version of the ford 5.0....if it whines add fluid...you cant really bleed it out. it does this on its own...

Every Ford product I've ever owned has had a... distictive power steering sound. Are you sure that your pump is going or is it just that distinctive whine that Fords make?

If you want a prerunner style bumper made for off-road, you might want to give the Duff bumper serious consideration. They are a little more expensive than they used to be, but are still loads cheaper than most anything else out there, and built for wheeling and not just looks like so many "racing" bumpers. The bumpers come unpainted, so you can just spray paint it black or have it powder coated. They've stopped making a few other bumpers so it might be a good idea to order one if you wanted, before they stop making these too.

They were out of the 91-94 skid when I called too. Looks like they still have the similar skid for the 93-97 Ranger if you felt like messing with it to have it work, but it probably is better to just make a serious skid plate from some steel sheet or something. Removing the tupperware does leave holes, but they can just be closed up with tape, as mentioned, or even better, use silicone to seal up the holes. The holes have probably allowed water and stuff into the rockers though, so there might alread be rust and junk in there that needs to be cleaned out.

Alright, I'll look into the 5ohs then... thanks for the clarification... and the thing is, my reseviour (sp?) is full... I can't add any more power steering fluid...

As for the sound, I know that the Ford PS pumps have their problems, and I understand that there will be a whine occasionally, but the thing is it doesn't happen at full lock... it's a constant whine, as if the pulley bearing or something is shot... the pitch/volume changes with the engine revs regardless of if I've got the steering wheel at full lock or centered...

Ok, I see. We've got a Continental at the shop that's doing the same thing, to the point of puking PS fluid out of the fill tube on the pump, sounds like a pump replacement is definetly in order.

If it's any help, I've notice that the 2nd gen pumps on the SOHC 4.0s seem a bit quieter then the ones on the first gens, so that my be an option. I know I've seen a ton of 2nd gens in the junkyards around me lately.

Thanks Pat... I won't go through the Junkers because as I may have mentioned before, I have a line on dealer parts... I do need to know before I order them though, will the 5.0/4.0 SOHC PS pumps be a direct replacement for the 4.0 OHV, or do they require some sort of fabrication?

most likly not bolt up.i got completley confused...someone asked if an older ps pum off an 88 van (302-5.0) would work on their 2nd gen ...sorry ....just order a 1st gen 4.0 pump :thumbdwn:

I made my own skid plate. It was more for looks but Ive bumped it on things and it works good.

I have that steering stabilizer as well, It made a pretty big diffrence.
