Pizza boss said he doesn't want me delivering in my Explorer if it's leaking.

Post number 318 has been selected as best answered.

Just wanted to say one thing. A guy who I used to deliver with for 10 months (who's at another pizza place now). Delivers on a 02 Matrix with over 390k km and has a leak too. He loses about 2-2.5 quarts a week and every week he just buys a 5L jug and pours half of it in then rinses and repeats the following week. His leak isn't going to the ground though it's just leaking right onto his engine and exhaust manifold and it burns off so he's lucky. He said it does smoke a bit but his mechanic said to not even bother fixing it.

Every possible place that motor could leak oil, it is. The oil/dirt buildup around the exhaust manifolds will eventually catch fire.
I could be wrong but I believe it's clean around my exhaust manifold. At least from when looking at it yesterday.

An instacart shopper delivered groceries to my house while I was at work. They parked in my spot on the driveway and left an oil puddle. I wouldn't have minded as much as I did, but now there was oil where I park my main vehicle and I assumed it came from mine. It took a few hours and my wife finally told me an instacart shopper was at the house, answering the question of where the leak came from, but damned if I wasn't still on the ground with a flashlight looking under my own vehicle.

If you're leaking oil, I wouldn't want you to park in my driveway.

Take pictures of the top of the engine, I'd like to see the heads. The fact there is oil coming down the sides of the engine, the front main seal is one of the leaks.
Got some more. No leaks from the top of the engine from what I see. Bone dry.

I don't park on anyone's driveway even outside of deliveries.

I just thought of it. There is a way I can still use the explorer for deliveries and not leak any oil at the pizza place. I mentioned how when the truck runs it doesn't leak at all, it only leaks after it's been shut off.

Simple solution: Keep the truck running the entire time I'm at the pizza place. Yes it would increase cost on gas but during the quiet times I'm sure I can sneak one of those oil mats under the truck that I posted in this thread earlier. Just remember to remove it before I get my next delivery.
But if I'm willing to just let the truck run the entire time and not shut it off then I won't be leaving any drops and the boss won't know. Plus it will be dark by then when it really slows down. Would take 2 seconds to slip the mat under and another 2 seconds to remove it.

I'm not saying that I'll be doing this but if I really wanted to keep using it for deliveries and save the wear on my Honda, this is the way to do it.

Well, I just pulled up to our lacal pizza place, they don't deliver, but their parking lot has drips of all sorts . So, since you are in Canada anyway, I say go for it. That's the answer you want, there ya go.

Mm pizza

Sheesh.

Your intake manifold is bone dry, I'm surprised. The sides of the engine is where the oil is coming out, probably needs new gaskets on the valve covers.

New intake manifold gaskets were put on in March of 2021.The entire motor was also torn apart (right down to the heads) at the same time and thoroughly cleaned (hence why they're still clean). Both valve cover gaskets were replaced at the same time. I took a peak about 4 months ago and the valve cover areas were completely dry.

I have a feeling it could be the heads leaking. And this may be hard to believe but the oil pan leak is the worst leak of all of them because I believe that it is leaking out of the oil pan gasket too too. The entire gasket and oil pan would for sure have to be replaced.

if it doesnt leak on his property and onto a mat, does it matter? or is it if it leaks on a customers driveway...
You know the more I think about this, the more I am leaning towards doing your suggestion of picking up that mat and just putting it under the truck each time after each time I shut the truck off at the pizza place. I just have to get in the habit of doing it and always remembering to remove it before I leave again. Just hope the boss doesn't see it then he will ask why I am still driving it there when he asked me not to if it's leaking. That's my biggest concern really is it he sees the mat. If he does then I could just tell him that I'm no longer leaving a mess on the concrete, which is the truth the mat prevents it. So he has no reason to be upset.yes it's leaking but it's leaking onto the mat.

ohv oil leaks usually from valve covers or the main culprit the oil filter mount and O rings

I’d just ask the boss if you can put a catch pan/pad underneath the truck.

If he gets all butthurt, time to break out the Honda.

It’s going to likely catch fire eventually, so be prepared for that.

Frankly, I think it’s ****ing insane that delivery drivers are expected to use their own vehicles. I’d want to be paid very well. Between wear/tear, gas, insurance, etc…

I won't bother asking because he knows I have two cars and he will just ask me to drive the Honda.

What makes you say this?

Some pizza places have company cars for the drivers to use but not mine, the owner is too cheap.

1. the cats reach incredibly high temps, and oil can catch fire at that temp. do carry an extinguisher in case
2. :( boss should at least pay for gas, certain maintainence, or at least up the pay ;)

1. Oh I see. But I don't believe my cats have oil on them.
2. I wish, not when you have a cheap owner. This is why this is a short term part-time job for me. Hopefully can drop the hours by the end of the year.
