Pizza boss said he doesn't want me delivering in my Explorer if it's leaking.

Funny thing about a cat fire, your hood latch cable burns, and even if it does pop open the safety latch will be too hot to open hood.

I emptied a fire extinguisher through the wheel wells on my neighbors cat fire on a Durango. It didn't even slow the fire, had to sit and wait for fire department.

He had just got home from work and was in shower when I called him. Thought I was joking at first.

1. Oh I see. But I don't believe my cats have oil on them.
2. I wish, not when you have a cheap owner. This is why this is a short term part-time job for me. Hopefully can drop the hours by the end of the year.
oh ok, thats good. but do keep an eye on that, just in case. i still say keep an extinguisher in the X, jut in case, it cant hurt ever.
ahhh i see.

Found this online. I believe I have 2 cats.

If those are it where I circled, then the last time I checked the cats were dry. But I have a feeling my cats are dying as I get the check engine light popping up every now and then saying bad cats. I clear it but it just comes back on so i leave it and eventually it goes out.

Nope, you have 4. The box right near oil filter in above pic is the cat that burns, and yours has oil on it for sure. That is the bank 2 upstream cat. Just outside your red circle.Bank 1 upstream cat is kinda tucked into the passenger side frame behind tire .

one place you circled is the transfer case on the 4wd models ;) this looks to be differently set up from most X's. the sohc at least has 2 cats one on each side after the manifolds then it feeds into a Y pipe and out thru a single exhaust. also I dont recall any X, not even the v8s having 3 in line cats. they had 4 cats 2 cats per bank iirc.\

thought only the v8s had 4, no? the v6 trucks i seen all had 2.

Oh okay thanks. That cat burns what, fuel? How dangerous do you think this is? Enough to not drive the explorer at all?

Oh I see. Mine is v6 OHV though.

It burns when covered in oil. Geez.

How safe is it for oil to be exposed to 2000 degrees? Idunno. Can you even think dude? Beginning to wonder if you should be driving at all.

can kind of see it in this picture, there in 98 at least is one on each bank in approximately the same location before the y

i swear even the ohvs i seen in the yards had exhaust set up the same as sohc. 2 cats after mani then y, no?

the cat takes unburnt hydrocarbons and exhaust gases and turns em into less harmful gases. it is a danger if oil gets on it, since that stuff burns. if it doesnt get on the cat, then it is ok. if it gets on the cat, imo its a rather large risk, but your rig your choice i suppose.

That makes sense. Is this cat that's near the oil filter easily visible from crawling under the truck? Going by the pic it looks to be on the passenger side.

yes, both are easily visible, at least in thsi sohc. yes the one pictured is on the pass side, but there is also one in that exact same position nearly but on the driver side instead. wish i had a better undercarriage photo.

I'm gonna check this out, all I know is that the passenger side of the truck is completely dry. If mine do have oil on them i wonder if it'd be best to just have someone remove these cats from the truck....at least the ones that have oil on them.

at least in US removing cats is punishable. no go here at least, not to mention the environmental impact. also the exhaust piping as a whole gets really hot too, just not as much as the cat.

1. the cats reach incredibly high temps, and oil can catch fire at that temp. do carry an extinguisher in case
2. :( boss should at least pay for gas, certain maintainence, or at least up the pay ;)
Oil, gas, transmission fluid; prime example of fire starters, not going to lie I didnt know about trans fluid being real flammable till the other day. Another reason why I stopped driving my X too, oil was leaking on the passenger side onto the exhaust pipe, causing it to smoke constantly, that alongside the chain issue, she was restricted to short drives like home to work and that was it, till I could nab something else. Even if yours doesnt look to be on the pipes, I'd still be incredibly careful and as said keep an extinguisher, just in case and that way you ain't screwed watching it go down.

I've found that for a lot of food places, especially fast food wise, they cheap out. I never went into delivery the reason of the wear and tear plus everywhere told me the X was too old to trust, even being flawless at the time. May not be a horrible idea to check out another gig, could get paid more, not rely on driving everywhere meaning less wear on the honda, just food for thought.
