Re gear on my 99 ex

I would sugg a full rebuild due to the fact if done correctly you won't need to go back in except for oil services.
Question, what have you done to fit 33 inch tires?
Just rebuilt it about 2 months ago so I’m probably going to just do seals and pinion bearings and it’s on a 4inch key and shackle lift from wolf suspension and some pro comp helper springs in the rear with the shackles

I’m going with the 4.56s because my factory gears are 3.73s and my trans hates 4th and 5th (5 speed manual) thansk for all the help hopefully will be done with it sometime next week now I got to order the rear gear 🤣

Since you haven't ordered the rear gears yet, buy Ford gears whenever possible. They are made the best and will install with the least trouble, having the least possibility of gear whine etc. They are also reasonable for most popular ratios; Amazon product ASIN B01C5YFRM4

Thank you guys for all the help I’ll let you know how the process goes after all set and done

So the d35 gear that I got is for the front axle? And how do the gears work if the front ring gear is smaller than the rear being the back is 8.8
Physical size is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is the tooth count ratio.

dana 35 is front
8.8 is rear

Dana 35 in the front 95-04 uses regular rotation dana 35 ring and pinion
All 8.8 Ford axles have the same ring and pinion, so a ring and pinion set for a 8.8 will fit any 8.8 as long as you do not hit a carrier brake you will not need any parts other then the ring and pinion and the master install kit, new axle seals

Hey guys I had a quick question.I think I understand the process of the 8.8 rear end to instal the gears but I was wondering how the front is done because it had cv axles not the axle shafts like the rear is there c clips in the front too?do I just pop the cvs out and then the carrier can come out?please help😀

The front diff/housing you can remove fairly easily. The CV axles just pull out with minor effort, there is a spring loaded clip that rests in an axle groove, but it isn't locked. With the axles and drive shaft out, then you disconnect the rubber vent hose, and take out the three bolts that hold it up into the frame. I use an old bad battery under it, to rest on before dropping it all the way down and out.

I don’t think I’m going to drop the axle unless you have to just going to do the gears and bearing and put it all back together.I’m just wondering how the carrier comes out because on the rear you slid the axle in and the c clips come out then The axles is out but the front has cvs so is there c clips in the front too or when I remove the cvs does it free it up? Sorry for all the questions just don’t wanna mess anything up.

You do need an expert to swap the gears, it takes the right tools to set up the pinion bearing preset, and the gear mesh pattern.
The front you have to remove the whole unit, the opening for the diff/gears, is at the front, against the frame cross member. You cannot even remove the front's cover to drain it, you have to drop it out all the way. So the front you pull and do out on a bench, which is much easier anyway.

Ok thank you for the help hope it’s not to difficult trying to get everything done wednsday and take it 2hr away for a camping trip.I’ll let you guys know how it goes thanks again for all the help

That sounds like an exceedingly horrible idea.

You won't be getting both front and rear gears changed in one day, unless it's by a shop that is very familiar with these trucks.

Oh ok well thanks again for all the help and tips I’ll be starting wendsday morning hopefully done by the weekend

Does anyone know what the backlash is supposed to be on the dial indicator and how much resistance on the pinion gear?

The 8.8 ring gear backlash should be about .009 to .012", the spec is a little wider range than that, say .008-.015" I don't recall. The front D35's will be similar but I don't know what it is. Setting up the pinion gear bearings is much tougher, special tools and leverage are required.

Hey guys just finished the rear gear and took it for a ride (with the front drive shaft out)and it feels amazing took it on the high way and I was at about 3100 rpm at 80mph.here’s the problem when I was doing 80 truck lost a little bit of power and started to do what feels like a misfire.I got home and let the truck idle and pulled from the coil pack each wire and the motor stumbles from each one that I pulled so I don’t know if it still a misfire.any ideas??

Thinking back on it now I’m pretty sure I fouled my plugs out at idle it’s ok not smooth but no rough and on the gas it skipped a little the. Smooths out.when I was on the high way I was in 5th gear but foot to the floor for a good 30-60 seconds so I think I may have fould them

Well done on getting it back together and on the road. It sounds like time to pull the plugs and change them if they do look rough.

Thank you I’m proud of my self because there’s no grinding or wining no noise from the rear end and I’m only 17 that was my first time doing gears I’ve had the trans out multiple time but never gears let’s keep our fingers crossed that the front goes good too thank you all for all the help
