Rear Bumper with Swing Out Tire Carrier PICS added

brian1, how are you planning on making that hi-lift mount, im looking for a place to mount mine and have an almost identical bumper to your drawling

I will probably mount it lower than my pic shows. Planning to use some 3/4" bolts (or whatever size fits through the holes) drilled for a lock to go through with washers and wingnuts. Bolts would be welded to the swingout frame.

I'm just gonna replace the rear bumper. As for reasons why I am using 1/4 wall vs 3/16 wall, if you've ever seen me wheel, you'll understand why. Not to mention the price was minimal and I rather make sure its nice and beefy.

^^Oh, ok. I plan on using 1/4" as well. Shouldn't be too much heavier and it'd be nice to have the extra strength to it. :)

up untill now i thought mine was plate, but now i see its a 4x6 piece of tubing with steel diamond plate sides and top. that worked out pretty well, i just think with 4x6 alone you may not have enought space as you'd like for ewither mounting things or setting tools and such. Oh and ben will definatly need 1/4"

Been thinking more and more about what to use for the hinge. I've decided to use a trailer axle spindle with a DOM tubing covering it with plug welds. Of course I'll use some bearings and a cap to cover it up.

Here's a reason why I decided to use a spindle with a tube covering it..

Off topic, but I'm gonna need directions to Draper's since I will be up Saturday ;)

add a stop to the swing away, mine swung around so hard today it left a dent in the quarterpanel.

Ok, bumper is built and it's strong! :D :D Ben was hanging from the swing out carrier (with the tire attached) and it didn't flex!! Unfortunately, the digital cameras were acting up today so we don't have any pix yet. Hoping for some tomorrow. In the mean time, here's an accurate drawing of the bumper.

little teaser.. Just have to add some D-ring mounts, a 2" receiver mount, some side protection and some caps and then herculine it.

I've got a roll of film going to get developed tomorrow that has a lot of pix of the assembly of the bumper. Hopefully I'll have 'em scanned and up in a day or two. Amazingly, no blood was spilled in the completion of this project (a first!!), but two toes were sacrificed for the cause...dang that thing is heavy when it drops on your foot  !!

Glad Ben got his bumper finished, great work you two, we had been talking about it for a while back and forth.

Jeff I'll be up there to get mine done the weekend after the Lost Hwy 87 trip.

When I get to it, that's how I want mine. Tire in the middle and maybe a gas can to one side. Looks good so far Ben/Draper.

Yeah I was aiming for no issues related to eye sight in the back. Works perfectly, on the way back I hardly noticed it was there.. actually the truck seemed to run a bit better on the open road since the spare wasn't bouncing around the rear compartment or on the roof.

How ...thick... is it, from front to back? Not sure if thick is the right word.

how deep, as in the depth of it? or the width if you were to use the forumla lenght x height x width

I guess I'm asking the length then. How far out does it stick out from the back of the truck.

The base tube is 4" wide. We cut off the ends of Ben's frame rails so that it sat as close to the hatch as possible. The back of the tire support sits about 1" off the hatch release handle on the tailgate. Total distance from the hatch handle to the mounting face for the spare is probably around 12" or so. I'll try to remember to pull up my dimensioned cad drawings tonight and verify that.

What did you use as a latch to keep the swing out carrier in place?

Temporarily, I welded a 90° bracket on the bumper and we used a bolt to hold the swingout in place. Long term we're using one of these:

Pulled up my model. The distance from the hatch handle to the mounting surface for the spare is about 9.75"
