I have a couple new questions now, so i'll also give an update. I got a hold of a used Torsen limited slip and 4.10 gears, but the gears are no longer usable. So i am in the market for a new ring and pinion gear set. From 4WP, there are several options:
First, Genuine Gear sells gear sets that meet OEM standards, but they also offer the G2 performance gear set. They are advertised as being quieter and exceeding OEM standards. The normal set is $169.99, and the G2 is $189.99. For $20, is the G2 worth it?
Second, there is Precision Gear for $218.99. I probably would just go with Genuine and save a few bucks. Is Precision any better?
Third, Precision also offers a 4.30 ring and pinion, but for $250.99. I never (maybe rarely) read about people running 4.30 gears in their explorers. It seems the popular setups are either 4.10 or 4.56. Why is this so? Again, i will be running 32-33" tires.

If you have a 5.0 4.10 will be fine. If you have 4.0 you want 4.56

Ford gears should be the first choice, they are excellent. I bought my last gears for about $170. Look around, on eBay also. Good luck,

Well a ford dealer wanted $796.00 for a new ring and pinion. I asked them to recheck that twice because i could not believe thats what they wanted. And 4WP prices seem to be about as low as i can find. So now, i just need to know which gear set to get, normal or G2 from Genuine Gear.

This is why we refer to them as "Stealership's".

Reider is a great choice for rear end parts. Ford has multiple retail and wholesale prices. I know because I have had them accidentally charge me various different retail and wholesale prices, lots of times. You have to know who you are dealing with, and compare other places also. Good luck,

well i just found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Motive-4-10-ring-and-pinion-gears-for-Ford-8-8_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33731QQihZ007QQitemZ170151101946QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
It seems to be a great deal, brand new and only $23 more for shipping. The seller also has 100% satisfaction from his past buyers. I am just a little wary of long distance buying and selling because of past experience. Is Motive a reputable company? I still havent checked out Reider racing because i need to call about the prices, i dont see prices online. But i cant imagine i would get a better deal from them than this. What do you guys think? Thanks again for all the help and suggestions, it is much appreciated.

Alright, i dont mean to beat this to death, i just want to make sure i am getting the best i can for my money, and i want to avoid problems in the future. So here goes...
I was basically set on the Genuine G2s from 4WP ($189), but doing more research i read that some people dont recommend them, and that Precision Gear (the only other choice at 4WP) is better quality. So then i was thinking for $30 more from 4WP i would just get those. But I also have heard about Yukon Gear being the best, even better than Precision. But upon doing more research on Yukon, I learned that they dont make their own gears, but just distribute gears from other leading companies (is this true???). I saw some examples where people received Precision Gears along with master kits from Timken, or Richmond gears or any other company. ALso, I PMed a dealer on Pirate (machinewave) who was said to sell the cheapest priced high quality stuff, and he quoted me a great deal (165 shipped), but it is for Yukons, and i don't want to receive a low quality product from him.
So guys, considering the options i just mentioned, what would you recommend. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for this but i dont want to end up regretting whatever i decide to buy.
Basically, its between:
$189 - Genuine G2
$218 - Precision
$165 - Yukon (or whatever i happen to get in the packaging???)

Here are Ford 4.10 gears for an 8.8 for $225...
Personally, I would go with Ford gears. I've pulled Ford gears from salvage yards with mileage in excess of 100K that looked great. Here is the link to the 4.10 gears for $225. Personally, I think that if you had a Ford gear set that was set-up properly and maintained properly and not run to death, I would not be surprised to see them go 1 million miles. My '89 Ranger has 350,000 on the rearend and the gears are still quiet. When I pullled the cover last year to replace a leaky gasket the gears looked excellent. Ford gears are a no brainer in my opinion, forget the aftermarket garbage. http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=255

Sounds like you are talking about GM's Gov-Lok. They actually aren't that new. I don't recall what year vehicles I first encountered them on, but I would guess they have been around at least 15 years or more. It is a really neat idea as it acts like an open carrier until one wheel spins then the other will lock in. It's too bad they break so easily. I don't know how many broken ones I have seen over the years. Someone I used to know exploded one accidently just by driving in sort of a figure 8 pattern in a parking lot. He parked the truck after doing multiple turns in a parking lot. A few seconds after he parked he heard a load boom which turned out to be the Gov-Lok exploding. It blew parts right through the axle cover.

Thanks nofortunatesonII, I'll definitely consider them as an option, they just are a lot more expensive than i was hoping to pay. This project started out being just $500, and now it will end up being close to $800, even more. But i got your PM too and i appreciate the suggestion.
Froader, i wasnt meaning to call Yukon low quality, i just am nervous of getting something that isnt the BEST quality.

Just get the Yukons.. I ran them on my old set of axles (IFS D35 + Ford 8.8) and I'm running a set now on the Dana 44. $165 shipped is a good price. As FROADER already stated, Yukon is not low quality.
