RV Update / Upgrade Thread

I had mentioned on one of my threads (Purchasing 46.5 Acres Near Kingman, AZ) that I had the inverter/charger fail on the RV while camping. Its a Prosine 2.0 made by Xantrex and lasted about 15 years so I can't complain. I purchased a new unit from Xantrex and its being shipped. Most of the camping I do is dry or boondocking. RV has 600 watt solar system along with the inverter so it does very well for extended stays off grid. I pulled the old unit out and don't like the way the batteries are wired, so I think that's going to be a redo and relocation of half of them. RV is a 35' Class A that is a very well maintained 18 years old.

The batteries for the system are 4 GS2 group size or golf cart batteries. I am upgrading to AGM's because they last twice as long, charge faster, discharge slower and have no maintenance. They are still heavy mothers though, about 65 pounds each. The current set up which was not installed by me has the inverter/charger in the storage compartment directly in front of the entry door, where most of the electronics are located. Good protected spot. There are two batteries in the entry step well, along with the chassis battery. There are two more in the storage compartment directly behind the step well. What I don't like about that is all the weight of the batteries is all in one spot, on one side. I also don't like how it was wired. I am going to relocate the batteries in the storage compartment to the driver side storage compartment directly across from the step well. It will even out the weight distribution, and free up valuable storage real estate since that is one of the few compartments you can easily access with the slides out. That part should be relatively simple; get a new battery box that is in line instead of side by side, mount it and install the batteries.

The wiring should be simple as well. The current set up has one in line 300 amp fuse that is located in the step well. The batteries in the step well connect to that fuse lug with a very short length of 4/0 welding wire, all good. The batteries in the storage compartment connect to that same lug with about a 4-5' length of same type/gauge wire that runs along with the main wiring harness for the coach. Not so good as there is nothing to protect that section of wire from shorting. From the 300 amp fuse is another 5-6' length of same type/gauge wire that goes to the inverter. Also not so good as there is nothing to protect that section of wire from shorting and frying the inverter. To make it much safer, there should be two more 300 amp in line fuses, one at the other set of batteries and one just before the inverter. The wiring from both battery locations should meet at that fuse with a short length of wire to the inverter. The relocated batteries will have the wiring inside the storage area, since its a full width pass through type compartment. I can use the existing wiring from the step well battery location that already goes to the inverter location for that half.

I found everything on eBay, can't believe how much wire has gone up in the past few months. $4 a foot for 4/0.

I'm working on the control panel redo.

Has anyone bought "finish grade" plywood lately? It's crap. The veneer is paper thin. I bought a half sheet of 1/4" birch at Home Depot. When cutting it with a jigsaw or hole saw, the veneer starts to fragment because it's so thin. Luckily it only fragments on one side, mostly. I used a new plywood blade, and started all the holes on both sides before cutting through. When sanding it with 220 Grit and my little vibrating sander, I could see it darkening in a few spots because even light sanding I was almost through the veneer. I only sanded off light pencil marks and gave it a light smoothing out to stain it. I almost returned it, but need to get this done.

Anyho, I will soon have the controls where I want them. The solar controller display and tank levels are up high because that's what I look at / use the most. Thermostat below those, then the Fantastic Fan and finally the slide controls. This configuration will make it all much more user friendly. I'll post a picture, probably this weekend of it all back together.

First coat of satin clear polyurethane and you can really see the dark spots from the thin veneer. They look like smudges. Also a few spots where the veneer peeled off, but I'll have to live with it. Only one will show.

I also put a coat on the back side to help hold the veneer together, it's that thin.

This is what the panel looked like before. The solar controller display was at the bottom which made it hard to read even with a angled plate. I also didn't like how everything was off center and crooked. They should be mostly straight now.

More to come.

I put two coats of clear on the panel and it dried quickly. Figured I might as well put it together and be done. All the controls and displays are how I want them, and all the wiring reached the new locations. The panel doesn't look too bad since it's recessed into the door and almost always in a shadow.

The more I use the panel, the more I want to change it up one more time. I'm going to move the solar display and thermostat up, then drop the tank/water display down to where the thermostat is now. Not in a hurry, maybe soon, maybe not.

There hasn't been any reason to repair anything this trip. The only thing I've done is I bought a little Fridgidare counter top ice maker. The water line that feeds the freezer ice maker rotted away years ago. The fridge would have to be removed to replace it, and it never made ice fast enough to keep up with need. I also don't think messing with a 22 year old fridge is a good idea. I removed the icemaker to create more freezer space years ago, and would buy a small bag once a week. Now, I have the best of both worlds. More freezer space, and an ice maker that fills up a 2 gallon tray in a few hours. It's quiet and fits in a cabinet when not being used. Ice is a little soft when made, but an hour in the freezer hardens it up nicely.

I have a little space saver project to get started. I have accumulated a few hundred DVD's that I watch in the RV in the evenings. Yes. I'm a little old-school when it comes to entertainment. The DVD's take up a lot of space. I bought a few DVD sleeve books for the movies. Most of the series DVD that I have are fairly compact so I will leave those alone. I figure I can free up 75% of the two DVD height cabinets and use them for something else. I think it will be easier to see what I actually have with them in sleeves since I have so many there DVD cases on top of DVD cases. The organizing of the DVD's is what's going to take the longest. I think I'll keep it simple and go alphabetically.

I will have Starlink by the next time I head out to the Arizona house. I was planning on purchasing it for the house and since its got electric power now, I'll order that and set it up when I get there. I was thinking of using mobile Starlink but need it for the house so I can set up the security and cameras. Most of the places I camp with the RV have decent cell service so if I want to stream movies I can do it off the phone. I don't plan on RV traveling much in the next few years. RV will be parked at the Arizona house starting early October. I'll be leaving it, the boat and the Explorer in the garage there. I'll make the drive back to San Diego in the Explorer, then tow it back with the Silverado, then go get the boat with the Silverado. I'll fill up the truck bed with garage stuff for each trip.

Sounds like a good plan. I have two Starlinks now, one for the home, and the new mini for the RV. They let you put the plan on hold for when it's not in use.

The MyRadar app I'm running on the Ipad was a game changer for my cross country trip. There were some strong storms in Missouri and Illinois. I was able to see where they were in near real time and pull off the highway until they blew by. I never drove through more than a drizzle. I used to carry a weather radio, but I never knew what county I was in at any given moment, so that was about worthless. I have ran into some hellacious storms on past trips.

I've accumulated about 5,000 DVDs over the years. I keep most of them in giant 3 ring binders with disc sleeves.

I just rip them into mkv files and use a file server (aka, Jellyfin) to serve them up along with my mp3 music collection.

Jellyfin is the way to go, but takes a lot of time. I tried uploading all my CD's years ago and never made it far. 😮‍💨

We ditched the cases many years ago
The books w sleeves are the only way to go otherwise they just take up too much space

I have i think 5 seasons of life after people and 20 seasons of ancient aliens in my dvd folder lol

Starlink rules we have had it for 3 years now? One outage… only one! and it was global last month and only for a few hours
Waiting list in many areas so the sooner you order the better

So when we moved here and starlink was new we signed up. I think it was 18+ months before we got one. Everyone rural like us looking for high speed internet. There is no infrastructure up here in small town pnw. My parents signed up for one and so did we.
We got ours
My folks decided the high speed they had installed at their in town house was fast enough. So they declined their unit.
Now more and more people moved up here their dsl internet is throttled so badly… they wish they never would have declined, i am always bragging about our starlink
Now they are back in a waiting list… the starlink up here is full

“That’s a negative ghost rider, the pattern is full”

Their internet is soooooooo slow
