Secondary Transmission Filter Installed (Feedback)

Just found this thread, well finally decided to click on it...heh heh, but somewhere in the begining of this thread someone was wondering about a filter magnet.
Well, I remembered seeing one in the Performance Products catalog, the brand name is FilterMag and they have 3 types/sizes:
Race- 10 magnets
Standard- 8 magnets
(third must be a misprint because its
listed as standard w/ 8 mag. too but
pic shows it being the smallest of
the bunch)

Just thought I'd pass along the info, I'll be doing the tranny filter mod as well in hopes to prolong my trans. life.

I just installed an external filter in my 97 Explorer 4X4 using a Summit TRD-1028 ($12.75) that was just on the shelf collecting dust. Having an external filter also makes a transmission flush an easy and clean if you use the Summit spin on filter bypass adaptor TRD-1013 ($9.95) connected to a drain hose. I have mounted the filter with a dog leg "L" bracket on the outside rail just behind the bumper. So forward is it that the filter is within 1/4 inch of the bumper bolt. This makes for very low visibility and the filter was sprayed black to further conceal it. Filter is installed between the radiator and the external cooler. Remember that fluids flow faster when they are warmer and those of you in colder climates should place the filter before the radiator. I was told that Ford has a "H" plumbing adaptor that they place before large coolers that induce flow restrictions in cold weather and provides for bypassing. Another way to reduce flow restriction is to use a dual filter mount such as Summit TRD-1036 ($25.75). It should be noted that the efficiency of a filter greatly increases as you reduce the flow through it. But, where would you mount it?

I am using a PL3001 filter. Have never found a worse filter than the FRAM PH8A, there isn't even a close second. These have minimal filter area and are designed to restrict flow rates when the oil is cold. I've taken a lot of used filters apart and found that ALL check valves start to fail after a few months unless they are made of silicone rubber. Many filters can be easily opened by using a good quality kitchen can opener. Just get your own because it is hard on the cutting wheel.

Installed my external filter today. Just curious how you guys with external filters are doing your flushes. Are you using the TRD-1013 filter bypass adaptor that Opera House mentions or are you just disconnecting the out line at the external filter to do the flush?

Lee

How exactly do you guys perform the trans flush? Are you feeding new fluid as the old is pumped out? is the car in neutral? Any help would be appreciated... I do not have much experience with Auto Trans.

>>I disconnected the “to transmission” hose from my remote filter housing. I plugged and clamped the disconnected line and added and hose clamped a 6 ft length of 3/8” line to the housing. The other end went into a calibrated water jug ( 1 gal size ).

We used 15 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF.

Even though this ATF ( Mobil 1 ) has about 40 k miles on it, it still looked remarkably good, slightly darker in color.

After the flush/fill was completed, I added a new K & N filter to the housing and reattached the hoses.

The procedure took my son and I about 20 minutes to complete. There was no mess since we were well prepared for the flush; nary a drop was spilled.<<

The procedure is done in N, we added 1 quart ATF after 1 quart of old was pumped out,

Al:

It looks like that TRD-1013 might make quicker work of the tranny flushes.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=TRD-1013

Seems like you could block off one end of the TRD -1013 and attach your 6 ft. hose to the other, pop the filter replace it with the TRD-1013 and you're good to go for the flush. No disconnecting or plugging and clamping. Better yet with my filter accessible thru the wheel well you don't even have to get on the ground or on your back. The only drawback if you can call it that, is that you won't be flushing through the filter which shouldn't matter since you are flushing out all the old fluid and replacing it with new. Seems like a $10.00 investment which would make flushes easier.

What do you think?

Lee

I don't see where it is needed.t taked a couple of minutes to remove the hose, plug it and attach the other hose.

Mine is so easy to get to, you need not get on the ground.

Its not like you are changing this filter every month.

When doing the flush, are you adding the fluid as you pump it out? If so how do you know you are not pumping out the new fluid. Is there a color change when this begins to hapen? My 1999 XLT has 55K... Still has the Mercon V; however, I want to go with a synthetic (AMSoil). DO you guys suggest I drain the tranny at the pan and then refill with new product or flush.

Does anyone have any long-term comments on their external filter set-ups?

I'm considering one, just haven't made up my mind. My main concern is the added flow restriction of the filter and hoses......

Yup, works fine. I replace the filter with each oil change. No regrets, shifts like a champ. I've been using cheap old Coastal ATF  and Coastal dino oil too for the last 60k

Don't go overboard on this... To date I have never flushed, washed, wiped with olive oil or masaged my tranny. All I did, see very first post in the thread was drain what I could out of the pan, add the filter and top off. Each time I replace the filter, again at each engine oil change, I add back about a quart of ATF.

:banghead: I want to do this mod in the worst way but after spending an hour going over my S.T. I got no room to mount the filter, Bummer

I know our vehicles are pretty different but just as a referance here is mine.
Directly above the filter is the factory aux cooler, and to the right is the B&M after market cooler.
Cut and bend a few brackets. It all was cake.

Thx M
My OEM setup looks very similar to yours, bummer is I do not have a bumper persay, it's integral to the entire front faschia.
To get the exposure you show in the pic, which I feel would be needed to do a proper clean install, the entire front of the S.T, needs to be removed, helped a friend install a trendz grill, it was a PITA to remove all, ST will be on ramps tomorrow for an oil change.
Maybe I can find a location closer to the tranny
Thx

I have had mine quite a while, I also change the filter ( K & N ) with each oil change, but I use synthetic ATF ( Amsoil ).

Mine is mounted inthe passenger side fenderwell and has beve posed a problem. Easy to change too.

Fenderwells? I got no room on the fenderwells

I shall get a pic as soon as possible. Not mounted under the hood on the fenderwalls, but in fromt of the tire.

I finally got around to doing this, took care of it this morning. I mounted mine to the cover that goes under the radiator, then just changed the lines around. I think everyones opinion here is to change the filter after the first 500 miles. I'll see if it makes any difference in the shifts.

I installed mine last week, a mod well worth the money. I made an L bracket and bolted the bracket to the bumper, there was a hole in the bumper already, directly centered and behind my front license plate. Just cut the length of hose in the kit in half and hooked the filter right in between the radiator cooler and the aux. cooler. Plenty of room and extremely easy to change filter. Directly behind license plate so no one can see it. Always prefill filter to keep air out. Changed first filter after 125 miles.
