Should I give up? Darkest hour. (scam-y used parts dealers)

I killed two of these cases, one from potential previous owner usage, and lots of me hammering in low. The second I ruined by user error clicking into 4wd while spinning after going into a ditch and trying to avoid stopping.

I’d try and get one in the yard that had an accident, or other obvious reason for being there. By looking at the tires, interior, and engine bay you can tell if something was taken care of. I’d gamble on one of these for the cost of one at the pick and pull.

Ford d shaft bolts are 12mm 12 point not 13mm or 1/2”!!!

I do have a few 1354e t cases like 6 of them I sell them for $150,

(FYI we also have several 1354m, $4-600 for a manual caee with linkage)

Shipping these days is $$$$ for me from north Idaho they ding us for extra, would be about $100 shipping to so cal

Do not let a slight leak turn you away the caee can be split rather easily and re sealed in like 30 minutes

Many people about 10 years ago we were running Mercon v in the t cases because that is what the transmissions use… ford when then come out and say Mercon v is too slick for t cases they were correct. I have personally seen 2-3 1354, 4405 and 4406 blow up due to using Mercon v.

We Run Mercon iii or ford transfer case fluid now no more issues

Driving on dry pavement in 4wd for too long can also chew them up
It's been about 6 years since I've pulled the drive shaft out of my van. I guess I've forgotten the size of the bolts

I’m the reminder guy I’m not allowed to forget as I mess with 2-6 of these driveshafts a week! I’m full time trucks now no more elevators

I have like 6 12mm 12 point sockets, every once in a while I will brake one
With wobbly extensions that allow me to use electric impact to remove them without even rotating the rear pinion.

I see rangers….. rangers everywhere!!!

I've got half timers. I forget half the time

I think I found a TC in Pennsylvania ... thanks everyone ..
If your in California, why would you buy a used case from PA? 410Fortune was offering to sell you one for a very reasonable price. If he's selling it, it works.

Did you discuss having your transmission shop rebuild yours, or a core?

To the op.

You are way better off exchanging with forum members.

It’s Allright dudes maybe he gets a warranty or got a better price?

The goal is just to get the old truck back on the road we are here to help with that!!

Hey guys I got great news. The old beast is rolling again.
I found an exact match transfer case from FLOWER'S AUTO WRECKERS in Pennsylvania.

William Flowers is a great guy, I highly recommend.

For the transfer case, with shipping (all the way to CA.) , it was 275$.
And it arrived in like 5 days.

The transmission shop threw it in for 300$ bucks and it seems to be running fine for now.

I just need a ball joint, new pads and rotors, and I should be good for extended
driving.

The transmission shop said when they drained the old transfer case, the fluid was black
and dirty.

Entire ordeal was my own damn fault. Change fluids early and often in these
old transfer cases and avoid the hassle!

I appreciate all the support. Can't say thanks enough.

Everything is for sale if the price is right.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
I threw in a TC from a wrecking yard and got my Explorer running but only to 3rd gear. Tops out at 30 mph.

I have a feeling the shop threw it in with Mercon V.

Would that cause it to top out at 30 mph.

I have another issue. When I turn to the left side... like sharper turn at slow speed like doing a U-turn... I get the banging sound as if I'm in 4x4 ... but I am not.

Is the control Trac engaging when it shouldn't be?

Could it be my tires?

Could I deflate /inflate them to a certain PSI to avoid this.

Finally. I have a friend in Idaho.

She's near Brundage resort I guess that is McCall or something.

If you could assure me a quality TC suitable for my rig. I can drive it up there in my Honda CRV and stay with her while you do your magic.

And then haul it back to my truck and have a shop put it in for me.

I have one BW 4405 TC taken off my vehicle. It's the one that blew up. Which would be easy to throw in the trunk and haul up with me.

Then there's the one inside my Explorer now that only goes up to 30 mph.

In the meantime I'll switch out the fluid and see what happens.

What rpm is the engine running at when it tops out at 30 mph?

It's on the high side. Like you know it should be changing over but just revs high.

When it comes to this, make sure your lil' plastic covers around the gas take ain't hanging, especially the driveshaft side one. I had a similar think on mine and it turns out the gas tank cover had just broke and was leaning on the driveshaft whenever I turned left or accelerated too hard, which caused a thunking sound that I wouldn't have expected it to cause, but sure enough it ain't done it since zip tying it back up. I'll see if I can come back with a picture in a minute, I know I uploaded a picture to one of my threads..

Yeah, here, can see where the cover was rubbing the driveshaft. try that first, then move onto other possibilities

It could very well be a transmission problem. However, a failed throttle position sensor can prevent an upshift, if the tps voltage is too high. It's an easy thing to check first.

Mercon V wouldn’t change the transmission to not being able to shift.

I’d make sure you’re not stuck in low.
