At what point does a "Stock 2006+ Explorer" become a "Modified 2006+ Explorer"? When I put in a new radio head unit? When I change out the OEM tires? New exhaust?

I always wondered why there were separate forums for "Stock" and "Modified" Explorers, especially when there's not a huge amount of posting in either forum. Breaking down the forums by year groups is nice. Breaking them down by "Stock" versus "Modified" is a slight annoyance if you ask me.

In my opinion, modified implies a non "bolt on" change.

I think it depends on you. I mean since you mentioned putting in a head unit, technically that could also go in the Audio section ;). The stock vs. modified for the third and fourth generation will develop over time as more and more people start modifying their vehicles like lifting and so on. The first and second generations made more sense to separate because more people actually did some serious modifications to their vehicle like lift kits and so on.

But in parallel to this, lets take the concept of stock vs modified a little further and ask, what does "custom" mean since thats used a lot. Like people talk about "custom" rims or wheels. IMO, unless you had those wheels casted and machined to your parameters, then its not really "custom" now is it? Because a hundred other people are probably running around with the same exact wheel they got from PepBoys or Summit:confused:.

^^ I completely agree. Custom is a very misused word.

For the purposes of this site, I would guess modified means noticeable exterior, drive train or interior changes. A HU is an interior change, but I'm talking like big changes

<-------------------------------- customly modified with stock parts

try a wikapedia for that!

"custom modified" -- thats like having a double negative, which arithmetically brings you back to stock ;)

IMHO if you have a stock vehicle, and this is taking these terms at their literal bare bones best, it is as it was (still with me?) when it came from the factory. Modified is everything else. If you have aftermarket tires on your vehicle and you order stock tires you will be disappointed. By aftermarket I mean other than your original size and brand. Seat covers, floor mats, etc. don't count as modified. Most vehicles, one way or another, fall into the modified column. Whether you've put parts on or they've fallen off. Again, this is just my humble opinion.

The way I look at which section to post in, is not by the truck but by what I am asking about.

how about stock parts mounted with customized parts modified to fit the vehicle?

Agreed, post in the stock section if you have a question about a stock part, say a ball joint. Post in the modified section if you have a question about a cold air intake, exhaust, lift kit, whatever isn't stock.
