supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

Cool! Bet that felt awesome taking it out for the 1st time! :bounce:

Is it me or is your Tach out of whack?

yea, its out of whack, and i think the higher up, the more its out. i know at idle, it says about 1100-1200, but on a scan tool (not scangague) it says about 750-800. if i put my foot in it, and let it shift, the tack goes well beyond 6 grand......well beyond.

and than??

now what ???

now i take a break for a while. but tomorrow i take it to work and freak out a few fellow employees. i also though the most important tool in the shop was what he was holding :p:

Definitely in the PCM programming. Mine also is off with the PCM swap, but it reads a little lower than normal. :dunno:

Found the correct length for the front shaft. 33 7/8" ;)

thanks gregg. that is from center to center on the u joint caps correct?

Nice job! I love to see the planning that went in to this. It looks like things went pretty smooth.

You now have one of the very few v8 sports out there. Nice solid drive train.....Beautiful!!!

Ditto, Congrats!

thanks guys. on wed (i hope) it will go to get the exhaust fixed, then when i pick it up, i will go back to my buddy's place, and check it over. i am now convinced that the squeaking sound is a u joint that didn't get grease. has to be. i also found another front shaft today as well, and will see if that fits, change the tack on it, and a few l.e.d's that have burnt out. i also picked the final part for the motor today......well, final for now.

you didn't think i was going to leave it like that did you?

i figured everyone is getting there's powder coated, i'm going to make mine, and give it to kevin (who did evils flames) and let him have at it. i told him put, flames, skulls, scary carp on it, just make sure the back ground is black, and you can do anything you like to it. he was just going to hand it to me and say "on the house, don't worry about it". i gave him $20. had to give him something, right? NOW i can say its "Evil"!

Now that is cool!

I freaking love it! :D Still think you should get matching blue highlights on your Fooses though :p:

Sorry, I didn't see this.

From Evans thread on his front shaft with a lift kit. Don had his front made for him (he has no lift) And gives the dimensions.

Heck, just read the entire thread. I know it is for a longer shaft for a lift, but there are other worthy mentioning's in it for yours.

The 33 7/8" I posted was incorrect. That was for V8boatbuilders post for his custom shaft. He does have a 4" lift so he needed it longer. Sorry about that. :(

no worries gregg. the one i found is also a f150, but is collapsible, and shorter then the other f150 that i have. i will try it and see. if it doesn't work, i told the place where i got it from, and they said i could return it if i have to.

will see. i want to make sure evil is 100% before i drive down there. hell, i took it to work today, and it was cold out. it started no problems, and i didnt even plug it in. when i went to get the plate, and drive shaft, i took my ranger, and evil started better then it!

That intake plate is cool, well done.

I had my front shaft made before anybody had posted the length of a non lifted truck, I hope it's right. Evan gave me his guess as to what it should be without a lift, but I didn't write that down. Post your measured length when you get it done, this is becoming more common to do. Night,

i was kinda hoping to finish the little bugs today.....but i couldn't. i will later have to go back to russ's diagrams and see if he put something in there for the tack.

corkey and i were talking last night in chat, and he had mentioned there was a circuit board in the cluster that may do the trick. i have had evils out and in so many times, it might as well be velcro in. so i figured that would do it as well because when you look at the pics above, they are totally different. no dice. next i was going to just man up and change the tack. its not so fun with the overlays. i have spent about a hour trying to get them to sit center that just the thought of removing it was going to drive me batty. so i figured i would try the 5L cluster in there before i dug in. didn't make a difference . so i just changed the burnt out led's and put it back together.

i did however get something done! she is once again a 4x4. thanks gregg (gmanpaint) looking back on the threads he posted, i didn't realize there are a few different shafts. i picked one up a few days ago, but couldn't get in back in to buddy's place until tonight, and......IT FIT! so if anyone that is reading this, and will be doing there sport with a 4406, you must use the telescopic (that's what i am calling it) shaft, with a conversation joint. when its in the truck, it measures about 33 1/8. (that's from end to end not counting the yoke). it to, just like the 4 door guys JUST FITS. save yourself some aggravation, and bolt the front part of the shaft in first, then the transfer case in after that.

DSC01358_Medium_.JPG

and the rear shaft measured 25 inches end to end, not counting the yoke, but keep in mind, evil is lowered 2 inches.

also got the exhaust fixed. he said it was ok, he just needed to cut and re weld the hangers. i also greased the rear u joints, and guess what?! NO SQUEAK!! (all the money they charged me, and they couldn't grease the u joints, what a joke).

so here is what it was, to what it is now. yes, i know its oily, and yes i know there's rust, but believe it or not, this is one of the better ones up here!

4L stock everything

i still don't like the way that rear shaft is, but it is what it is.

on another thread (don't have the link handy) they were talking about using a mustang trans bushing instead of the weaker explorer one. have bad news......

DSC01355_Medium_.JPG

it wont work. i was hoping it would, because it looks like the one i have in there is already starting to fail, and i haven't even been standing on it hard :shifty_ey

That is a dramatic difference in angle.
I see what you where meaning now with the comparison pics up. That tail shaft on that 4406 really is kicked over more than the 4404 was. I realize it is longer too, but I mean..Wow! This is the first set of pics I have seen that shows this. That's a great valuable thing for others to see, or for you to compare with others that have already done this. I'm sure it stands out more because of the shorter wheelbase, but sheesh! Glad you had the insight to think of taking the pics.:thumbsup:

The "Slip" joint shaft and the conversion joints are just what the Dr. ordered. Congrats on that Tim!

Your deff going to want to get a poly trans mount of some kind, as I fear you might have a vibration to deal with that angle. Kind of why I was mentioning a double cardan set up in the rear to help out. :)

amazingly, no vibration. smooth as silk! but i do think the mount is already done. when i was looking at it tonight, it looks like the case is rotated over to the passengers side....guess what i am ordering tomorrow......
i am also trying to dream up a way to make a mount on the cross member its self. if you have ever seen a mustang cross member, it would be something like that with a hanger on the frame like a chevy motor mount, then a round bushing inside a tube welded to the cross member. i will do that later after winter.

Just for grins....Would you have a look at your engine mounts, and see if they are straight? If they are off even a 1/4" from side to side (meaning the engine is not set straight), that would add up to a lot by the time the axis line gets to the tail shaft on the t-case. Most likely my crazy imagination at a late hour, but it don't hurt to look. ;)

I know exactly what your talking about with the GM style mounts, I have installed many in my day. I like Fords style better myself. It stabilizes the rear of the trans more I think. Just my 02.

not sure, but i think i may have thought up a better way for the cross member, and use a mustang bushing. lop the top off the cross member, weld in a flat piece of steel, and drill two holes in it. your not giving away any strength, because your replacing one metal with the flat steel. your just bringing it down so the taller mustang bushing will work......hmmmm.....
