Warrior Shackles: Installed

I just installed Auto Zones Suspension Performance Products shackles part #81400 (they are 8.5" bolt center to bolt center at the longest setting - 3 different holes). I forgot to measure prior to the install but after there was an obvious rear height increase, so much so that for the first time the rear sat higher than the front. After a little ride I measured all around and brought up the front torsion bars to even things out. I can't really say how much the increase was from the shackles, but to give you an idea I had to increase the front torsion bars 1 3/4 inches to match the now higher rear. The shackles cost $12.99 and they are simple bar stock with one hole at the top and three at the bottom. I am a little concerned that they are not welded together like some of the ones you see in varius lift kits, so I'm taking them to my favorite welder to see if he can weld a piece or two of bar stock to join them. However, without being welded together they are still as solid as the original shackles. I did see where someone here did a similar install but welded their bars to the original shackles. This would have required longer bolts than what came with the new ones, which were 1/4 inch longer than the originals, and a couple of washers to take up the gap between the leaf spring bushing and the wider combination of original shackle and new bar stock shackle. So I went ahead and installed just the bar shackles. You can definately see the new shackle underneath, but with my U-Haul hitch it's not quite as noticable. Oh ya, I was also a little concerned that the hitch would get in the way of the new shackle, but it clears with about 4" to spare.

BTW, I can take a picture with my web cam and post it, but I dont know how. Anyone have instructions once I get the picture taken?

Instead of shackles do what that Todd guy did with his 98 Exploder. Buy the Ranger Suspension Lift and Body Lift and run some 33's. Dependable Off-Road did it to a Exploder the other day and I saw the pictures, looks great!

Jordan714:
The problem with using the Ranger suspension lift on '95-'97 models is the torsion bar setup is different than the Ranger. The ability to drop them with the parts from the lift kit would require alot of forethought, time, expertise, etc. In '98+ the torsion bars are the same as the Ranger.
BTW, instead of welding the shackles I instead installed bolts (Grade 8-1/2"X4.5") into the two other holes in the shackle using some 1/2"X3" galvanized pipe (threads and all) as a bushing. The 4 bolts, nuts, washers, and galvanized pipe cost $5.00 at Farm and Fleet. I think this setup is stronger than the stock shackle and gives the now visible shackle a purposeful look as opposed to leaving the two holes empty.

Hey,

where can you buy the Warrior shackles? Can SOmebody give me a website or a store?? Just something.

thanks

Am I correct in assuming that after cranking up my '97s torsion bars that I will need an alignment? It seems that the camber would be affected, but no one mentions getting an alignment done.

Robert,
You may have to have an alignment done. After I did the adjustment, I had my tires installed and the alignment checked. The alignment was still perfect.
If you have new tires comming soon, have it checked then. If not, don't risk eating up your present tires, have it checked.

How many turns of the torsion bar adjusting bolt does it take to get any noticable lift in the front. Say 1" to 1 1/2". Thanks for the replys.

Mikefox,
It is not the same on both bars, because the drivers side bar is longer than the passenger side. The passenger side will take less turns than the drivers side. At least it was that way for me. I originally started out with 4 turns on both sides, but then found out that the passenger side was alot higher. After messing around with both sides, and wanting to only go 1", I could not tell you how many turns I ended up with. It was sort of a turn them and see type of thing. Dead Link Removed

I'm just curious...What size tires is everyone here running under their trucks after the lift?

Sorry about going off topic.....

Tim,
I have a James Duff 2.5" lift.. using the supplied Add-a-Leaf. After Doing so the rear of my explorer was at least 1" lower (closer to 2") than the front. I replaced the supplied 7.5" shackle with the 8.5" warrior Products shackle. I now run 31x10.5 on 15x8 rims. So far I have no rubbing. It looks like 32's will clear but they will be tight in the front wells. I'll borrow a few tires before I go out and buy the 32's.
