Zhanx's SAS - HP Dana 44 on 37's thread

Decided to go with the Superliift up front. and uniball uppers, maybe box in my lower arms for now, ( to make them skid plates.. seperate thread on that later.).

I really really want the travel i can get out of an SAS and would l ove to ditch the IFS, but time is an issue for me right now. So i am doing this for about the next 2 years after that i hope to SAS.. we'll see then.

said screw it on the superlift i checked the price on it. way to much money. So I am grabbing a manual transfer this week and hopefully a dana 44 out of a wagoneer (found a couple just need a price that is right)

when i grab the axle what all should i pull with it? complete steering and steering box, leaf springs. Or should i try to grab the whole front suspenion just in case?

It never hurts to get the whole thing just in case.

ok been doing lots of research on the steering setup. (my biggest fear)

Cant find the answer to this, will any knuckle fit any dana 44? Say i get a eb d44 and it doesnt have flat top knuckles on it will any fit as long as they are fun disc brakes and i run the proper guts? (i want to run 5 on 5.5)

if so then i can do the following if my research is right

AGR Ford Super Pump to a first gen steering box(or if i can afford it one from agr).
drop pitman arm (arm they are the same and how do i measure the drop)
from there a high steer with chevy tre's (for off the self replacement parts)
to a Inverted T setup linky (about 80 percent down the page or so blue and grey pictures)

input on this setup please.. more later as i refine the plan

Ok got my manual transfer swapped in today. Still need to Cut a little bit of the plate for it to shift back in to 2hi and do the wiring for the dash lights. This brings my first phase almost to a close. My next phase is getting the axle, which i have found but i am trying to work a better price on still.

hey dude. when you gonna sell me that front diff with the 4.56 in it? I would really like to put it in my truck so i can have 4x4 once again!

good luck with your tuck tho! solid axle is pretty intimidating....

hey i just started buying the peices.. i'm trying this is my first swap dude. Besides i am taking lots of breaks to work on my lightning and jump out of airplanes.

its going but slowly, ordering some R.E. joints this week along with some bushings.

oh my bad i got the impression that you already swapped sorry. didnt read the whole thread.

TIs ok right now i am trying to get as much flex out of my front suspenion as possible. Due to the fact I will be takine a fairly long break from the real world and going out to learn cool guy stuff at a special swamp in the woods were i get to get my butt kicked and have to sit there and take it. I am planning to run tellico as is in the late fall then start ripping stuff out. When I come home for christmas i can stop in ypsi if i am that far long and make the sale cheaper due to free shipping.

ok well, i got IZWack's cv stubs to replace my bad one and have a back for the other ones. Well I was tearn down today to swap out the bad passenger one, everything was going great. Pull the old one no problem, started cleaning and wiping everthing down to reinstall the new one and realized there was "something" in the axle houseing. So i grabbed my magnetic pickup (cause it looked like metal) and It was part of a bearing. In fact most of the outer bearing was missing. This is not a good thing nor something i want to fix. So out came the front axle i broke apart the old cv's and used just the outer stubs. To hold the wheel bearing togther and make it driveable. After i get everything cleaned up and inspected the cv's and front axle (if a certin person doesnt want it still) frotn gears and locker are goign on ebay to help fund this along with some other parts i have laying around. So look for more activity on this thread in a bit.

BTW everyone, yesterday was ZHANX's birthday!!! wooot - the cat is out of the bag :p

ok i earmarked a grand to get this started. So next week i'll be junkyard shopping, hopefully i find something. after that i be gone so it will have to wait, IZWACK how much ball park minus axle have you spent to do your sas?

minus axles and minus everything needed to "complete" the axle assembly (brakes, gears, hi-steer arms, rebuild kit, etc..), I have spent probably about ~$1.5k - with a majority of that being in the air shocks (~$700). About another ~$350 was spent on the tubing required for the three links, panhard, the two steering tubes, shock tower tubings, and a few other pieces such as for a front cross member. The rest was spent on the RE Super Flexs and other joints.

how does a front axle out of a jeep rubicon sound its a dana 44, comes with an air locker, would jsut need to regear it. anyone seems the cons on one of these. i could keep the 5 on 4.5 and save so money.

I think I heard that they are not much stronger than the d30. I think it was the outters, and if that is the case (don't hold me to it), then 37s would be too much for it.

well crap, i figured it would make it a little easier. i'll have to do some research maybe. if its true (which it might be) then i'll go with an hp d44 out of a bronco and play with that.

No one said a SAS was cheap I planned to do it all for $2800. I'm probbaly closer to 4k though :(
