1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

You can cut the wire to the theft light

Very easy to get the key chime wire jacked up those things are finicky
You will see it’s touching ground when you pull the shrouds
Can retain it with a tiny zip tie or small dab of
Glue to keep it in place

The 4x light wires can go directly from t case switch to instrument cluster
You can also find the wires at the gem
Module but you want to cut their feeds to the gem and only send the signal to the cluster

*****in!!! She’s runnin

Sweet. Behind the cluster?

I got it to where it only chimes in the ACC position, and that's good enough for me, I added the key interlock like a factory manual so if I go through the trouble to use that I'm sure I'll pull the key out. I'm more bitter that I broke the tabs off the lower shroud pulling it off. Oh well, those are easy to find compared to the manual upper shroud.

I spliced at the GEM, I bet that's my problem. I'll pull the GEM leads off and see what I've got.

Needs the front shock and reconnect rear swaybar then it's ready for the road! Well, I should probably put a driver's seat in too haha.

Can cut it at the pats module behind airbag (where it originates) it is dark Blue w geeen

Or at cluster

The gem module does not need to know anything about 4wd anymore and it no longer controls the lights, the switch in the manual t case does directly to cluster in a manual shift 4wd truck

Drivers seat can be make things… a Block of wood, your left leg, Milk crate, passenger bottom from some old ranger…. Hahaha

I once drove 30 or so back highway miles on a milk crate in my '97 to take it to the salvage yard. It was on my sports' stock rear suspension (I had swapped them) and the whole time I thought the Speedo was reading higher than actual because of the wrong axle...later I realized it had actually been reading low. Let me tell you, when you're sitting on a milk crate and hit rough railroad tracks faster than you mean to with mono leafs under a four door, it's a little squirrelly haha.

I got the driver's seat back in and 4wd lights working. Time for a maiden voyage to the gas station!

Tonight the Mounty and I made the 22 mile round trip to the nearest gas station with 91 on tap and it was largely a success.

I babied it the whole way, never exceeding 2500 rpm. As tough as it will be, I want to follow the clutch bedding process before I have too much fun. The clutch pedal feels good and the transmission goes in and out of all forward gears without issue. Getting into reverse takes a little finesse, I'll have to keep paying attention to that. The trans seems a bit noisy, but I also have no carpet/flooring or shifter boots installed, so that's probably to be expected. The trans also has 117k on it and I didn't do a thing other than fill it with fresh Mercon, so I wasn't exactly expecting perfection.

The PCM seems to be working flawlessly without any idle issues. The only electronic issue I uncovered is that my clutch position switch doesn't kill cruise -- and it scared the daylights out of me when the engine jumped to redline before my thumb could press the off button. I'll have to double check my wiring and have my thumb ready on the off button before I test again haha.

I think it's time to finalize my trans harness wiring as that all seems good. Then I can get the trac flooring, seats, and shifter boots installed. For the rest, I want to keep running up the miles and debugging.

Nonetheless, the Mounty is running and driving with five gears and three pedals!

I consulted wiring diagrams and it seems in the V8 harness, the two wires that would be closed by the clutch switch or jumpered in a V6 harness are spliced directly together. That explains why the way my clutch position switch is wired doesn't kill cruise. I need to find this "S147" and un-splice it.

Well done!
Glad you got that big clutch ;)
Yes 5 speed noisy without carpet kit
So excited for you and your truck!!! 5 oh 5 speed has put a smile on my face ;)

Yeah I can already tell it's going to be a torquey rig by the way it pulls in the low RPM. Glad I have 3.73 gears too, I understand what you said about 1st being almost useless on the street and I can only imagine with 4.10 gears.

Going to need to make a patch piece in front of the shifter, but I'm loving the dual bezel and trac flooring combo

You maybe able to run a ranger lower console to cover the Mia flooring

Well done Grant, enjoy that new fun.

BTW, what is the gearing of that 5-speed, the 1st gear? That can help me see where my gearing will be. I'm planning on the 6R80 and 3.31 gears, which is a 4.17x3.31 = 13.9:1 low gear final drive ratio. The stock 302 Explorers have a 2.84x3.73 or 10.6:1 ratio.

I have 3.08 gears on hand too, but I just found the new 3.31 gears on eBay.

in post 850, I like the looks of a full rubber floor mat...

3.90:1 first gear. Not much different than the 3.72:1 in an M5R1, but noticeable.

Does anyone know if the relay box under the dash by the steering column is Auxiliary Relay Box #3? The splice I'm needing to cut is by #3 according to my manual, but the manual itself just shows #1 by the air intake and #2 by the driver's rear quarter panel.

I’ve always known it as “aux relay box one” or just “aux relay box”

What relay are you looking at will determine which aux box you need the explorer has a couple of them

I'm not looking for a relay, but rather splice #S147 which is supposedly located near the takeout from the harness that runs to aux relay box #3.

Did you try looking up splice 147 in the location index?

Yes, that's where it says "near T/O for auxiliary relay box #3." Of course auxiliary relay box #3 is not mentioned anywhere else in the manual. Maybe it's a typo?

Geeze ford couldn’t have stuffed all these into one box under the hood?? lol
