try the search button :)

A 4.0L is already a bored and stroked engine, but there are plenty of options for internals and more power.

yes it can be bored

What's the expected longevity of these kits? For a 3,500 short block, I'd be temped to have a tired 5.0 rebuilt, and a fresh AODe.

Price vs performance and longevity, I'd rather do a V8 swap.

However, with my truck being my daily driver, I'd lean toward direct bolt in performance/replacement parts (like those from supersix or morana) in order to get my truck back on the road in a weekend. Most people aren't able to get a complete powertrain/wiring/etc swap up and running in a weekend working in their driveway.

For now, I'm happy with the power of the SOHC in my truck and don't need to weigh those options yet. Those with the OHV have a tougher decision.

I'm just so leary of the POS v6 transmissions. Stock they don't last well, and when pushed with higher HP I wouldn't expect a long life.

I'm not at all impressed with Ford V6 transmissions either. My 5R55E has been rebuilt twice already before any mods and is slipping badly already. Its not like my mods are adding much power anyway.

There are some trans upgrades available, but again not really cheap. I don't know how the guys with turbos and superchargers are keeping their transmissions from dieing.

manual tranny...

The V6 manual transmissions aren't any good either. If I was willing to go through the trouble of an auto to manual swap, I might as well do a V6 to V8 swap and get more durability out of it.

There is a kit available to adapt any small block V-8 to the V-6. End of tranny problem...

more $$$

also putting a V8 trans behind a V6 = big power loss, I vote grab the V8 with it!

This is coming from a guy who is on Transmission #7 in my BII hahaha if I knew then what I know now.....

If your auto V6 trans has been rebuilt 2-3 times, you need a new builder and I suggest starting with a fresh core.

A C-4 is hardly a horsepower hog and they're cheap too.

but you can use a C5 bellhousing to put a C4 back there no need for that $$$$$$ kit

I am refering to C6, AOD+ sizes :)

the adapter kit is fantastic for using a manual transmission or a full size auto transmission, but to me the $$$ for the adapter could go towards the V8

Rick dont get me wrong, I love to see people build monsters and the 4.0L OHV is a wonderful engine for off road, so do whatever you want! I just have my own logic which is likely swayed by me driving a v8 powered truck the last year + now, I was a HUGE fan of the OHV, I still am, but I am an even bigger fan of this 5.0L

My 5R55E was rebuilt at 2 different Ford dealerships under warranty. I don't remember much about the first repair. The second time, they had to replace 2nd and 5th gears along with a bunch of other little stuff. Its slipping like crazy now but out of warranty. I had to put the stock program back in to stretch out its life awhile longer. Until we get rid of one of our 2 houses, there's no spare change to spend on the truck unless it becomes undriveable. I'm waiting for the trans to die so I can justify replacing it with a new one along with some VB upgrades.

Once we sell our old house and build some savings back up, I'd like to find a wrecked 5.0 Ex to prep for a complete swap. Probably just a dream that'll never happen though, since I'm sure my wife will object to it.

The nice thing about buying the V6 performance parts....she'll think they're just stock replacement parts.

just because the dealer is where you took it doesnt mean the dealers trans builder has a clue how to put together one of these automatics correctly (obviously)

from what I have been told and seen the Ford V6 A4LD family is a real tricky little unit to get correct, the tolerences internally are much more stringent then that of your run of the mill full size auto or chevy automatic, so it takes someone who has been kept up to date on all the updates and internal upgrades, no corners can be cut, and attention to detail must be paid, or you end up with the nightmare you are experiencing with your automatic. I would seriously fight the warranty dates on your unit, just because they give you a warranty that starts on teh day you pick up your rebuilt unit, does not mean it should not be extended if they cannot get it right in 2 attempts

I don't think much can be done to the v6 tranny to make it any better. I had mine rebuilt 3 times, and the last shop used a low mile case and are very reputable. They build a lot of the local street/strip transmissions around here. I printed out a list of things I found that should be updated when these transmissions are rebuilt. After I mentioned that to the builder(you deal directly with the guy who rebuilds your trans, not slick at the desk), he was able to tell me about each one before he saw the paper. He knew Ford transmissions. He told me if I was hard on it it would need rebuilt again. His advise was to sell the truck and buy a v8 if I was set on Explorers. And this was a bone stock truck. If you plan on any kind of HP mods, you need a different transmission, and not an anemic rebuilt one.
