4.7L vs 5.0L

You should have gone from a 25ish mph roll, you'll get a hard kickdown to 1st and it will take off hard. I think my tuner helps out a lot on the downshift though.

ooo gotta love those shift points. I'm tryingto find the best ones. I know theres one around 25 then 40ish then another around 60??

All I know is my 2000 5.0 AWD can not beat...

The 2001 Durango or 2000 Dakota...4.7L I have two friends each owning one of each. Also I had a 2002 4.7 Dakota (as some of you might now, the bad crash I had). And no 5.0 Explorer could take me...

I guess its just seeing it and living it all...

Jon, you mean me? If so the race is at KCIR on the 30th. And I found the good old video camera too. If I can find a USB cord for it(8 year old Sony) then I'm gonna start making youtube videos. We actually are kinda like an unoffical car club up here and we need a camera. But yeah jon I raced Geoff and damn is the Explorer pullin hard. And you're supposed to have O/D off when u race?

This is good to hear. I have faith I'll be seeing this truck in action.

I was actually wondering if the Explorer will ever meet the Durango.

I got a dozen Krispy Cremes on the explorer.
Any takers?

he was talking about storlied I think, and yes you should have o/d off when you race. It's not designed to take that kind of punishment.

wish I would have known that sooner? So how does having it off affect the truck performance/mechanical wise?

I think you are ok-
the truck likely will not hit 4th gear by the time you reach the traps anyway--

In fact-I don't believe the PCM will ALLOW 4th gear at WOT

in our application it's not really a big concern since we're not likely to see speeds fast enough to require overdrive while racing ~107mph. I don't remember a lot of the details, but basically it's really hard on the o/d bands to run wide open throttle in o/d, and it builds up a lot heat, which is always bad for a transmission

So with all the junk out, running on half a tank or lower, without the subs and spare tire. It's possilbe to hit low 16's with my setup. I also bought a bigger cone filter a week ago also!

So go ahead and turn it off when I'm at the tracks ?

I ran a 16.7 with your mods, but also had a vaccum leak and there was a lot of humidity, and I also had the spare tire and my sub. I would guess you would be capable of a 16.4ish

Yeah keep o/d off at the track, and it wouldn't hurt to keep it off while just driving around town either.

Woohoo, i just checked and I'll get to go play at the track on the 4th, one last chance to get into the 15's before the big tires go on:party:
lol right on , too bad u couldn't go the 30th. but This will probably be the only time maybe one more at most I take the Explorer out to the tracks. After that I'll have to take the lincoln or just get a sports car for that area. I might eventually follow your direction when I get another car and turn the Ex into a strictly off roader people hauler. And then use either the Lincoln as a sports car or a few years down the road, I'd like to eventually get a 2005 Mustang GT!

Leave the OD alone, it has nothing to do with anything until the speed is high enough to need 4th, and the throttle is off. You should not reach the end of 3rd gear before letting off. Thus in either D or OD the times and results will be identical. OD has nothing to do with how the 1-3 gears work.

Leave the driveshafts alone also, the losses from AWD are through the TC, and the front axles etc. The power is already lost, the front shaft takes almost no power to spin up to speed.

Get a very good start, and try to have the race over by the time you reach 3rd gear. Regards,

She'll be up for the race after she figures out what's going on with her tranny.
I'll be able to describe the problem in detail after I take it for a test drive.
She said it's slipping, from what I've observed.. when it'll shift.. it'll be delayed and then jerk the vehicle.

Sounds like it's time to race to the transmission shop.

Haha..

sounds lke a vavle body issue, sticky solenoids or bad accumulators springs.
May i suggest a J-mod, and a fluid change?

Isn't the J-Mod a Ford Transmission thing?
Like our SOHC Explorer transmissions, the 2nd Gen Durango had transmission issues handling all the extra weight from an SUV body.. I assume they used the same transmissions as in the same generation Dakota.. which is much lighter.
