I couldnt find it although I thought is was a common question.
I have 15"x8" steel rims and 31/10.5/15 tires. I am just ready to upgrade to 35/12.5/15  but all the manufactures websites say min. wheel is 8.5" wide. But Ive seen it done before.

I really dont want to buy rims and I want the tires to last as long as I can.

Will 12.5 be good on 8" rims?

Thanks

P.S Im looking at wrangler mt/r or the bfgoodrich mt

when you run a 12.5 wide tire on a 8" wide rim it will help protect the rim from rocks and what not. However you will want to run a lower tire pressure otherwise the center of the tire will wear much faster, just like being over inflated.
A chalk test will tell you how much of the tread is riding on the ground.
My 35's mounted on 8" wide rims run at about 32 psi for street mileage.

Also many stock rims are 7" wide so you may want to double check your width. I have run 12.5 wide tire on a 7.5" wide rim before, similar results to a 8" rim

I have 35x12.5x15s on 15x8 rims and they are fine. The only thing is they may have problems getting them balanced perfectly. Large tires require quite a bit more weight yo balance anyway, and add to this that the rim isn't as wide which requires more weight for the static (side to side) balance and you'll end up with a lot of weight on most 35s. Mine are nearly perfect, but there is still a little vibration that I can't seem to get rid of, nothing you wouldn't expect with 35s though :p

Alright, Im planning on keeping my rims. Will I have any trouble getting them mounted? Ive heard of shops refusing to mount some configurations.

find another shop, here in Denver you would not have any problems, any off road guy who mounts tires would know its okay, it is VERY common

Man... I actually live in Denver too, But my Xplorer is in arizona at the moment... My parents think im crazy but im still buying it tires even though its in a diffrent state!?! any body else in denver?
