I have a gold 2001 ford explorer xlt. I want to get new wheels for my x but im torn between chrome or black. Also i dont want to spend a whole lot of money. If you guys could give me your opinion also maybe a suggestion on wheels with pics that would be good too. Thx.

i looked into getting them powdercoated cuz i do like that idea and it was like 300 bucks to get them powder coated also its not a huge deal but i wanted to go up to an 8in width insted of the 7

I think stock is 7.5? Why the 8?
Lots of people like the crager soft 8's but they are heavy (lose some speed and mpg) also I'm not a fan of gold. So I couldn't tell ya what would look best, imagining a gold explorer just doesn't sound pretty no matter what the rims :D

im pretty sure the stocks are 7 and i like the cragers too i just wanted to see what else was out there. And yea the explorer is gold i bought it a month ago in gold and i dont have money to get it painted so im trying to see what would look best now

Truck bedliner!

"paint" with truck bedliner? Pretty popular with the heels

still holding up just fine, no primer, just some scotch brite to rough up the surface

the texture is equal to about 400 grit sand paper

if you have a gold 01 odds are you have the chrome grill and chrome front and rear bumpers...... go with chrome wheels to bring it together. If you do go black, bring the white letters out on the tires

Alexdeluca, you mention chrome, and then powdercoating a few posts later.

You do know that powdercoated chrome is different that plated chrome?

Just double-checking...

If i get them powder coated it would be a black, but yea I realize I am all over the place right now. I just cant seem to make up my mind on what i want so i am just trying to get an idea of everything. My fault on being so indecisive guys.

I like your setup and I would like to paint my wheels to, to save the money but I am nervous that it won't come out right. Would you mind walking me through how you did yours.

It's really easy. I did it to my f150 wheels.

I taped the outer lip, used a scotchbrite pad to scuff the surface, wipe that clean with alcohol and then apply thin coats until it's covered really well. Mine took 3 coats to completely cover.

How long does the bedliner take to dry enough? I really wanna do this to my ex but I've been putting it on because it's my daily driver. Would it be easiest to do a wheel at a time or something along those lines? this is what it looks like now

And I don't need to prime it or clear coat it right?

You can, but you don't have to and I didn't. This was just about 2 years ago and they still look the same as the day I painted them. Just make sure after sanding/scuffing you really clean them well. I used satin (to match other parts of my truck), but if you want a shine, then gloss with a clear would definitely help.

I did all 4 of mine in 1.5 hours, including taping the lip. Mine is just paint, but you can be done with it in a day, completely dry no problem.

When I said use bedliner, I meant on the whole truck :D but actually that sounds like a good idea for the rims.... won't chip off as easy as the paint
