Okay update (still no pics yet need new camera batteries)

We were having a clunk in the transmission after changing the fluid and filter
This has been fixed, I failed to plug in the MAS the other night after doing a full tune up.
Wheeew! I was online researching the 4r55e clunk issues assuming the worst! Thank goodness it was something simple...

The truck is now 99%, I am still getting an EGR code, Insufficient EGR flow
I have yet to remove the EGR valve and check the diaphram for problems. I assume it needs a new EGR valve.

The truck got a new 02 sensor (had one laying around) and that took care of the 02 sensor code.

The multifunction switch went south yesterday, after attempting to use the hazzard lights the turn signals and hazards stopped working.
I took the multifunction switch apart and cleaned all the brass contacts. I also repaired the hazzard button contacts, one of them had come loose inside its housing. The signals and hazzards now work again, FREE repair!!

truck will be getting next:
transmission cooler install (this truck has no aux cooler from the factory, I have a V8 style cooler we will be plumbing in)

Rancho 5000 rear shocks (had them laying around)

new tensioner pulley (had this laying around)

I am going to crank the torsion bars to fix the factory sag, then it will get an alingment.

Brown wire mod

Going for emissions next week! Beautiful truck for thousand bucks!

You are saying that is so jamie, I mean look at this....he has new tensioner pulley sitting around with a pair of rancho 5000's also, and can't forget aobut the new 02 sensor laying in his garage...

this is what happens when you work on explorer's on the side, part them out and are always changing engines and transmissions.....you end up with a surplus of parts!

Many parts for this truck come from a 97 OHV sitting there in the barn, it was overheated. I replaced it with another OHV from the junk yard for a friend, he didnt want his old engine back. Now I am glad I never got rid of it!!

I also still have the 96 I rolled two years ago, just sitting there, slowly getting parts robbed off of it.

The shocks came from the truck I drive now, they were on there when I bought it, I already had 4 new Rancho RSX for it (from the truck I rolled)

02 sensors? Oh lord I have about 15 of those suckers!!

If I dont have something I just call Brett, he's about 400x's worse then me! Mr pack rat

Don't need to tell me. The complete engine in my explorer is from him! :D

which was from Joe before me and replaced with a 5.0L from Brett he bought off this forum!

What goes around comes around

Thats funny!! I have seen that from one ex to another ex with quite a bit of parts (engines, wheel/tires, trans, T-case) Those parts would be almost usless without this site...

What goes around comes around

The rear springs in my old Sport came from Brett. The EE swaybar came from Hydroxy's old truck. My front axle came from Evan's truck. :p:

Yes, my engine is a ***** 4 times over.

Looks like a good buy

Looks can be deceiving! May have a head gasket issue here.....

BUT

we knew that when we bought it, I am not afraid :)
I happen to have a set of 95TM heads laying around hahahaha

seriously

or junk yard motor?

still testing to be done.
Fuel pump in, truck running again

smokes white smoke a bit, coolant loss

All 6 Plugs looked uniform, I did not have time to do a compression test\

When we bought it I knew it would likely need an engine or a transmission, we still bought it

okay fuel pump is replaced, fuel pressure still bleeds down to 20# or so immediatley....hmm may indeed be the regulator I will swap that out today

truck puffs white smoke on start up, start up is difficult sometimes, longer the truck sits (at least it was before, we finished the fuel pump about 8 pm last night have not tested it this AM)

Coolant overflow was empty, but I have only filled it up once when we first got it so it may need more still

BUT its looking like this sucker is using coolant = head gasket I believe.

All 6 spark plugs looked nice and tan

very odd, any idea's?

When a hot vehicle is turned off-the coolant temp will spike up-causing more pressure-this is when a leaking head gasket usually shows first-on the next start there will be coolant in the combustion chamber. Under normal temperature though-the gasket seal can remain effective, or leak very little-

about the fuel pressure bleed down-I want a clear answer whether it is normal or not-as mine also does this.
Have you checked your 96 to see if it does it?

good idea!

I have read it is supossed to hold pressure, but I will check the BII and the 96 today to see if they do this. Brett seemed to think this was normal. I was under the impression that the fuel rail is supossed to stay pressurized...

something about replacing a fuel filter when you forget to releave the line pressure and soaking yourself in gasoline makes me think there should always be pressure in there.....yup you better believe I remember to de pressurize the system before working on it :)

that is a good deal.. beats the deal i got on my 96 Eddie Bauer. Truck was a trade in at a car lot, 114K, GREAT paint, no dings, couple rust spots on rear bumper, new tires, 4.0 OHV which i liked, wish it woulda had the 5.0 though. paid $1700. I guess not everybody in WV is an explorer lover like me, they couldnt get rid of it.

White smoke = coolant

Like JT said, when you turn an engine off you can get localized boiling, or thermal siphoning of the coolant which will increase the pressure in the system. This increased pressure with a now stagnant (not flowing) cooling system can allow the coolant will seep past a failing head gasket.

I'd bet the plugs don't look bad as it is only puffing white smoke at start up. You're burning off the all of the coolant before they have a chance to get fouled.

I used to troubleshoot intermittent bad diesel injectors this way. They would only show signs of failing after shutting the truck down for 8 hours. Big cloud of black smoke during start up. Right after start up they would start working just fine.

Sounds like time for a new headgasket. I'd also recommend having the heads slightly machined/decked to ensure flatness. If the heads aren't warped they can take only 0.010" off to ensure a proper sealing surface.

sweet thanks! I have some 95 heads we are going to strip off the engine this afternoon and have a look at, if no visible damage I will take those down to Blue Oval and have them checked for cracks and decked if required...

compression test is next, possibly cooling system pressure test

I am hoping for a head gasket, not head, but I have spares just in case
I have my fingers crossed the heads I have on a 95 OHV block are okay, but something tells me they are not (engine was overheated thus the reason I have it for spares)

Thanks for your input Hokie, I'll get this sucker running 100% so the mods can begin!

Obviously run your tests on the engine in the truck before you tear it apart. If its just a headgasket then the heads on it may be good. But white smoke definately means you're getting coolant into the combustion chamber. I doubt a burnt valve or worn valve seal could allow this in (but I don't know how the head cooling passages are on the 4.0)

You could be a $20 gasket kit and 1 hour in machine labor from having the engine running like a song.

All I did was reinforce what master JT previously stated ;)

As always, let me know if you need a hand with the wrenching

sorry I thought I typed JT and Hokie in the thank you.

plan is to get a couple of head gaskets, at least take a look at the 95 heads I have and then tear into this sucka on Sunday BEFORE THE BRONCOS GAME hahaha

We are selling James' 4 runner so the Ex has got to be ready to go!!!

When I have these problems with my trucks I usually just drop in another engine (upgrade) but this is a budget truck, so far so good! I think we have $150 in it hehehehe and about $600 worth of parts.....
