Anything stopping me from using a 5r55e from the next gen explorer? Just out of curiosity
Also anyone know of anyone managing a 6r60 swap perhaps? Not familiar with the tranny very much, just know some later explorers had it and it's a 6speed which could be nice. Just food for thought during my research
I know the later 5r55e eliminated the dipstick. I believe theres still a hole there though. I believe the 3rd gen 6 speed was for the 4.6 modular engine option. It is apparently better on fuel mileage than the 4.0 and 5r55e combo.

I can pull some wiring diagrams and see if there is a harness difference between the two 5r55e's.

I think the 6spd came about in 4g I dont think 3g had the

The 3rd gen did have a 6 speed option.

@amj441 i appreciate the dipstick bit, definitely want that! I would hope there's still a hole so you can still fill the tranny somehow. Can always use my dipstick in there then long as that is the case. But dang, that wiring may be annoying then, don't want to make custom connectors for it. Plus I'd guess I'd need a new transfer case and driveshaft if I did the 6r60 too, which I'm not sure i want right now. But maybe this is an idea for down the line, especially since ya mentioned it possibly being better on mileage..! Thank ya for all the info!

Yep, a few people have made a couple threads on a 6r60 swap, due its changes in build and connections, it's vastly different and would take plenty of work and probably a standalone controller to even make work a lil' bit. If I ever think about doing a 4.6l or 5.0 V8 swap, maybe I'll consider it then. But for now I'm going to compare those wiring diagrams of the 2nd and 3rd gen 5r55e and see if it's worth saving the $500.

I believe you can use a 5r55e for a 4.0 in place of the 4r55e, you just won't get the 2nd-1/2 gear. So still a 4 spd.

Thats another option, rather not go down to a 4 speed, but the 4r55e is still an option to consider for my price range.

Same final drive ratio in OD, at 0.75

Although I did just realize you have a 5r55e already. Don't know how the computer would react to a gear missing going the other way. I know it works from a 4r to a 5r.
Sorry, my bad.

Same final drive ratio in OD, at .75
And it's not that funky double overdrive like the 5r55e? So Same final ratio, possibly one less OD, one less gear to lose. Any perks to the 4 vs the 5?

The 5R uses the overdrive band on the forward drum to make a sorta-2nd gear. Really just an overdriven 1st. It goes from - i think - 2.47 first gear to 1.87 secondish gear to 1.47 third. The 4R uses the intermediate band on the forward drum to go to 2nd @1.47.
Just seems like a lot of extra work on an already weak overdrive band.

So the 4 may last longer due to putting less stress on the od band then I'd guess, while keeping similar rpms in the end. Noticeable change in mileage swapping to the 4?

3rd is 1 to 1, 4th .0.75 same as 4th & 5th on the 5R. Should be the same.
Again, you would probably have to do a computer as well.

Yep, guess I'll just pay the $2700 for the other for sure fit one, damn. Easier than swapping in a next gen 5r55 or current 4r55 I guess. Dang, spend more but hopefully take less effort and time.

In a lot of cases, spending the money is worth saving the time and headaches.

Very true, very true indeed. Guess we'll see soon

So if I remember right, people suggested using a 1354 transfer case since the 4406 is for the 5.0. Anyone got experience with the electric one, making it work, or know if it makes it actual 2wd? Or worth just finding the 1354m and making the manual one work? A long ways out, but if it's a worthy swap over the oem transfer case, I'm gonna start piecing lists and parts together. Reading a few threads on it in the meantime, mostly covering the manual
