-Deathrow Update Log-

And so, the revival pt.2 begins..! Was gonna use mom's 2500hd to tow it due to the weight being around 6400-6600lbs, but somehow the ol' girl did it happily, even with tranny issues of its own! So the X is finally at the shop and as of today being taken apart for rebuilding! They estimate it being done by around next Monday if all goes well! Hard to see thanks to led flicker on camera, but the trans temp of the rado was barely over 150, she gets hotter than that on a day to day basis; for a tired 4l60e, she loves to tow! lol
Excited to have Deathrow back soon and finally be done with this mess! Got several old projects for her I'm finishing up too, so expect some more updates soon! Though I work my butt off over the summer with both jobs, so they still may be slow progress till fall when I have some more free time again, I dont get any time off over the summer, at all.

Good going! Been looking forward to progress here.

Incidentally, I am still hanging onto those 4.10 gears (front and rear) for when we meet. You will need to provide your own installation kit, but I know Yukon Gear & Axle / USA Standard Gear (same company, different product line) at least used to make one for the Ford 8.8 and Dana 35. You're going to love the difference it makes for your SOHC/5R55E setup.

Sweet! So hoping I can make it this year! I definitely appreciate that and look forward to it! Based on how well a 4.10 does even with 37s on the rado, I'm definitely excited to see how well they do on the 32s! Especially after the couple of extra horses i should be making now! That's fine indeed, im sure I can find a kit, Yukon like ya said I'm sure has one somewhere still!

I got my 5.13 gears on RockAuto and IIRC one of the install kits was from RockAuto and the other was sourced from Amazon.com, although it's been a while back now.

That 5.13 has gotta be crazy! Yes sir, when the time comes im sure I'll find a kit somewhere! Common axle to build afterall!

So nice to have both my girls in the driveway! Still may be going back, clunks kinda rough into reverse, but its got a full warranty so, I'm not too worried. Tried to charge the a/c and it doesn't feel very cold yet its in the green, but oh well better than nothing. Felt so weird to drive her again, still kinda lackish in power too, but I didn't try too hard either, and dang I missed that sound system!

Time to see the new jurassic world! And how fitting to bring the X with some dinos on the basket! lmao

Perfect! Even more perfect, since the tour cars in the original were Explorers.

What I wouldn't give for a glass roof like those...

Yep! Too bad she ain't a first gen!

Man that glass roof would both be awesome and terrifying, could you imagine if a branch fell and broke/cracked it? How much it would cost to get another...but dad gum going out camping in the woods with that would be amazing!

Alright, planning time, gotta finish getting that fan hooked up properly to a sensor, but I may also replace my thermostat, pretty sure its got a high temp, like the 198 or something, in it cause ive seen it get as high as 216 during operating temps down the highway. Which in the FL heat I would rather avoid, hate that I gotta tear the top end off again to do so, but I really need to get like a 170 or 180 degree in there. So thats coming over the next few weeks. That and some lights swaps and lock fixes.

Normal operating temp with AC at highway speed doesn't sound " normal" but I've seen higher on my scanguage with no cel being set, and, there is an overheat code. I've seen 226 at 70 mph in Kansas. Do I like that? No, but that's what the pressure is for.

Thats without a/c, and I know its technically standard, I just dont recall it getting that high before, I just prefer it being cooler just in case. Didn't know there was an actual overheat code! Glad its not too bad at least!

I've never seen an overheat code on any of my 2nd-gens, and I've run them all pretty close to the top of the gauge (low-speed driving on sand for extended periods of time). Curious what temperature is required in order to set the code.

I would say there's one way to find out, but I certainly ain't willing to test that theory lol

I had an issue with my 99 SOHC twice, once with the electric fan not running from washing the engine bay. The marine circuit breaker was tripped and I discovered it at work when the idle went up very fast. I was using the Scangauge back then. It hit 245 I think that time, then in Winter the coolant was frozen(didn't add enough anti-freeze back into it). We had under 5* that one morning, and I drove it to work not realizing it was overheating. It hit 270* according to the Scangauge, but I don't recall any CEL. I never cleared any codes, the only CEL I ever had was from a lean condition, which was low fuel pressure(pump hose).

It took about a quart to fill it, not much was pushed out, and it did no harm to the engine. The thermostat was a Fail-safe so it locked open and I had no heat until I covered the radiator with cardboard, and later changed the thermostat again.

If the coolant level goes low, the ect sensor has nothing to measure. Ask me how I know a radiator blow out at highway speed results in a pO301 with burned piston, with no indication if overheat at all.

Dad gum, yall got some fun stuff over there, lmao

Alright! Some numbers are in! So, with me maxing my speed out at about 70mph, windows down, no a/c or vent, this is what I was getting today, averaged around 20mpg! It definitely didn't used to get that a few years ago! That rebuild, guck cleanup, and couple mods helped more than I thought in that department! With my normal driving and trying to keep up on the interstate, I'd probably guess it being closer to 18mpg average, we'll see next time I gas up, but thats still pretty darn good all things considered! Highest it hit today, that I saw, was 20.3 on the average.

Also, how much clunk do y'all get from y'alls rigs when going from drive to reverse? Mines clunked ans had a slight delay ever since it came back from the shop, seems slightly better, but I've put several hundred miles on her since and it still does, but its been a while since I drove an X and can't remember. It's only from a drive gear, neutral or park ya can't even feel it its so smooth, but drive clunks it in reverse, and yet its smooth back from reverse to drive.

@DemonMudder Hazey has a significant delay when shifting into Reverse from any other position (with the possible exception of Park, I don't ever have a reason to Reverse from Park) followed by a really good, solid clunk. It would be concerning if it was any other vehicle, but I haven't noticed it getting worse, so I just kinda pay attention to it and leave it alone.

I'll have to pay attention on the Vulture and give some more feedback there; I don't remember if that one clunks or not. I do recall ever since driving the Vulture for the first time that there was a clunk in the rear end a split second after coming to a full stop after moving forward, much more pronounced after a quick stop. Every time, without fail.

It's not impossible that both clunks are caused by a bit of play in the drive shaft, either on the transmission end or on the differential end. I had the Vulture looked over by a mechanic shortly after purchase and he said that a lot of the older trucks (like 2000 and earlier) that they have dealt with clunk like that after stopping. It seemed a lot less pronounced after the lift was installed, although I'm sure the repacked diff and oversized tires have affected the feel too.

Guess maybe its normal, I'm just used to a quick shift and getting moving, so I've stalled her a time or too that way. Like you, definitely plan to keep an eye on it, feel a bit safer about it now though haha! I did check the driveshaft without any luck, sucker dont budge a bit.
